Sex-Specific Associations Between Repetitive Head Impact Exposure and Cerebral Blood Flow Among Active Amateur Soccer Players.

Repetitive head impacts (RHIs) in soccer have been associated with long-term risk for neurodegenerative disease. The pathophysiology is largely unknown. This study aims to investigate alterations in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in athletes exposed to RHI compared with athlete controls (CTL). Given that females are known to exhibit higher CBF than males, we also explore sex-specific differences. Finally, we investigate the relationship between CBF and neuropsychological functioning and RHI measures. This study includes 82 amateur athletes (mean age 22.8 ± 1.6 years; 48.9% female). Participants und

Relativistic DFT investigation for reaction energies and electronic/bonding properties of Schiff-base polypyrrolic uranyl(V) complexes: effects of group 14-functionalized uranyl exo-oxo group.

CONTEXT: The safe immobilization of radionuclides and the removal of nuclear waste contamination from environment require a thorough understanding of the structures, reaction behaviour and bonding properties of uranium complexes. The cation-cation interaction (CCI), which is also known as the direct actinyl-actinyl bonding interaction, is common only for An(V). A series of binuclear uranyl compounds of Schiff-base polypyrrolic macrocycle (H4L), [{(Me3R)OUVO}2(L)] (R = C (1), Si (2), Ge (3), Sn (4) and Pb (5)), featuring CCIs, were systematically investigated by relativistic density functional

Enhancing the Diagnostic Utility of ASL Imaging in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy through FlowGAN: An ASL to PET Image Translation Framework.

BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) using fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET) is a standard imaging modality for detecting areas of hypometabolism associated with the seizure onset zone (SOZ) in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). However, FDG-PET is costly and involves the use of a radioactive tracer. Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) offers an MRI-based quantification of cerebral blood flow (CBF) that could also help localize the SOZ, but its performance in doing so, relative to FDG-PET, is limited. In this study, we seek to improve ASL's diagnostic performance by developing a deep

Comprehensive MRI assessment reveals subtle brain findings in non-hospitalized post-COVID patients with cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Impaired cognitive ability is one of the most frequently reported neuropsychiatric symptoms in the post-COVID phase among patients. It is unclear whether this condition is related to structural or functional brain changes. PURPOSE: In this study, we present a multimodal magnetic resonance imaging study of 36 post-COVID patients and 36 individually matched controls who had a mild form of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2) infection from March 2020 to February 2022. This study aimed to investigate structural and functional brain alterations and their correl

Machine learning-based approach reveals essential features for simplified TSPO PET quantification in ischemic stroke patients.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroinflammation evaluation after acute ischemic stroke is a promising option for selecting an appropriate post-stroke treatment strategy. To assess neuroinflammation in vivo, translocator protein PET (TSPO PET) can be used. However, the gold standard TSPO PET quantification method includes a 90 min scan and continuous arterial blood sampling, which is challenging to perform on a routine basis. In this work, we determine what information is required for a simplified quantification approach using a machine learning algorithm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed data from 18 patie

Pulmonary hypertension in adult Alk1 heterozygous mice due to oxidative stress.

AIMS: Mutations in the ALK1 gene, coding for an endothelial-specific receptor of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily, are the underlying cause of hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia type 2, but are also associated with familial pulmonary hypertension (PH). We assessed the lung vasculature of mice with a heterozygous deletion of Alk1 (Alk1(+/-)) for disease manifestations and levels of reactive O(2) species (ROS) implicated in both disorders. METHODS AND RESULTS: Several signs of PH, including elevated right ventricular (RV) systolic pressure leading to RV hypertrophy, reduced vasc

Possible contributions of reactive oxygen species and mitogen-activated protein kinase to renal injury in aldosterone/salt-induced hypertensive rats.

Studies were performed to test the hypothesis that reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) contribute to the pathogenesis of aldosterone/salt-induced renal injury. Rats were given 1% NaCl to drink and were treated with one of the following combinations for 6 weeks: vehicle (0.5% ethanol, SC, n=6); aldosterone (0.75 microg/H, SC, n=8); aldosterone plus a selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist; eplerenone (0.125% in chow, n=8); aldosterone plus an antioxidant; and tempol (3 mmol/L in drinking solution, n=8). The activities of MAPKs, including extracellu

Increased reactive oxygen species in rostral ventrolateral medulla contribute to neural mechanisms of hypertension in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress increases in hypertension. The aim of this study was to determine whether reactive oxygen species (ROS) are increased in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) in the brainstem, where the vasomotor center is located, in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP), and, if so, to determine whether the increased ROS contribute to neural mechanisms of hypertension in SHRSP. METHODS AND RESULTS: We measured ROS levels in the RVLM of SHRSP and compared them with those in Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances were increased in SHRSP

Spatially and temporally resolved assessment of quantitative skeletal muscle perfusion with non-contrast MRI in patients with PAD and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is mainly defined by macrovascular obstruction, while microvascular dysfunction remains insufficiently characterized by conventional diagnostics. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables non-invasive, contrast-free quantification of skeletal muscle blood flow (SMBF) in the calf, with potential applications in PAD diagnosis, risk stratification, and perioperative assessment of microcirculation. Deep learning enabled reconstruction of dynamic ASL data offers potential to generate temporally and spatially resolved high-qua

Association of Alpha-Crystallin with Human Cortical and Nuclear Lens Lipid Membrane Increases with the Grade of Cortical and Nuclear Cataract.

Eye lens α-crystallin has been shown to become increasingly membrane-bound with age and cataract formation; however, to our knowledge, no studies have investigated the membrane interactions of α-crystallin throughout the development of cataracts in separated cortical membrane (CM) and nuclear membrane (NM) from single human lenses. In this study, four pairs of human lenses from age-matched male and female donors and one pair of male lenses ranging in age from 64 to 73 years old (yo) were obtained to investigate the interactions of α-crystallin with the NM and CM throughout the progression of c

13C-Metabolic flux analysis detected a hyperoxemia-induced reduction of tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolism in granulocytes during two models of porcine acute subdural hematoma and hemorrhagic shock.

INTRODUCTION: Supplementation with increased inspired oxygen fractions has been suggested to alleviate the harmful effects of tissue hypoxia during hemorrhagic shock (HS) and traumatic brain injury. However, the utility of therapeutic hyperoxia in critical care is disputed to this day as controversial evidence is available regarding its efficacy. Furthermore, in contrast to its hypoxic counterpart, the effect of hyperoxia on the metabolism of circulating immune cells remains ambiguous. Both stimulating and detrimental effects are possible; the former by providing necessary oxygen supply, the l

LSD-induced increase of Ising temperature and algorithmic complexity of brain dynamics.

A topic of growing interest in computational neuroscience is the discovery of fundamental principles underlying global dynamics and the self-organization of the brain. In particular, the notion that the brain operates near criticality has gained considerable support, and recent work has shown that the dynamics of different brain states may be modeled by pairwise maximum entropy Ising models at various distances from a phase transition, i.e., from criticality. Here we aim to characterize two brain states (psychedelics-induced and placebo) as captured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fM

Reliability of multi-site UK Biobank MRI brain phenotypes for the assessment of neuropsychiatric complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection: The COVID-CNS travelling heads study.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain could be a key diagnostic and research tool for understanding the neuropsychiatric complications of COVID-19. For maximum impact, multi-modal MRI protocols will be needed to measure the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the brain by diverse potentially pathogenic mechanisms, and with high reliability across multiple sites and scanner manufacturers. Here we describe the development of such a protocol, based upon the UK Biobank, and its validation with a travelling heads study. A multi-modal brain MRI protocol comprising sequences for

Higher Aortic Stiffness Is Related to Lower Cerebral Blood Flow and Preserved Cerebrovascular Reactivity in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Mechanisms underlying the association between age-related arterial stiffening and poor brain health remain elusive. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) homeostasis may be implicated. This study evaluates how aortic stiffening relates to resting CBF and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in older adults. METHODS: Vanderbilt Memory & Aging Project participants free of clinical dementia, stroke, and heart failure were studied, including older adults with normal cognition (n=155; age, 72±7 years; 59% male) or mild cognitive impairment (n=115; age, 73±7 years; 57% male). Maternal metabolomic signatures for risk of preterm and early term birth in African American women.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Compared to healthy controls, adult patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) are anemic, and therefore have higher cardiac output and Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) to maintain brain oxygenation. They also demonstrate comparatively more cognitive deficits due to either overt strokes or silent cerebral ischemia. However, there are few correlative studies between CBF and cognitive deficits, specifically processing speed in SCD. Such studies are important to develop biomarkers of central brain processing and ischemia for diagnosis, prognosis, and evaluating the effectiveness of

Coupling analysis of diffusion tensor imaging analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) with abnormal cerebral blood flow in methamphetamine-dependent patients and its application in machine-learning-based classification.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS) index is currently widely employed to evaluate the neurophysiological activity in various neuropsychiatric disorders. However, there remains a scarcity of studies assessing the DTI-ALPS index in individuals with methamphetamine (MA) dependence. Recent studies on animals have demonstrated a significant correlation between glymphatic activity and alterations in cerebral blood flow (CBF). Hence, investigating the DTI-ALPS index and its coupling with CBF could yield novel insights for MA-dependent patients. ME
