Performance of magnetic resonance imaging in the staging of rectal polyps undergoing endoscopic resection: a U.S. academic cancer center experience.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the preferred staging modality in the evaluation of rectal cancer. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of MRI among large rectal polyps referred for endoscopic resection. METHODS: We analyzed consecutive patients who underwent MRI prior to endoscopic resection for rectal neoplasia. RESULTS: Forty-four patients with large rectal polyps (mean size 5.8 cm) underwent MRI prior to endoscopic resection. MRI categorized 24 (54.5%) lesions as T0/T1, 16 (36.4%) T2, and 4 (9.1%) T3. Final pathology demonstrated 5 (11.4%) adenomas, 21 (47.7%) high-

Does sleep-disordered breathing add to impairments in academic performance and brain structure usually observed in children with overweight/obesity?

UNLABELLED: Approximately 4-11% of children suffer from sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), and children with obesity are at increased risk. Both obesity and SDB have been separately associated with poorer brain health, yet whether SDB severity affects brain health in children with obesity remains unanswered. This study aimed to examine associations of SDB severity with academic performance and brain structure (i.e., total brain and gray and white matter volumes and gray matter volume in the hippocampus) in children with overweight/obesity. One hundred nine children aged 8-12 years with overweig

Personality correlates of study difficulty and academic performance in university students. I. The Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire and Dynamic Personality Inventory.

The personality correlates of study difficulty and academic performance in university students have been measured in terms of psychiatric symptomatology and premorbid characteristics. The UCLSQ, MHQ and DPI were administered to two groups of male and female students presenting at an health centre: one (n = 72) of patients seeking psychological help, the other (n = 73) a control group. Significant differences between the two groups were formed on the MHQ, confirming previous results; and these were supplemented by differences on the DPI. Motivational and psychoneurotic components of study diffi

A systematic review of academic performance of Children with Disabilities (CWDs) in inclusive education schools in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Globally it is estimated that about 150 million children are living with disabilities. Inclusive education inspires the participation of all students in the learning process in the same classroom. However, it is really difficult to find thorough, credible accounts of disabled children's access to education, enrolment, attendance, and results. This review evaluated academic performance, including access to school, enrolment, attendance, and results of Children with disabilities (CWD) in LMICs. In reporting this systematic review, the researchers followed the recommended Reporting Items for Syst

Visuospatial ability and student approach to learning as predictors of academic performance on written versus laboratory-based assessments in human anatomy.

As hours devoted to human anatomy curricula fall under threat and curricular delivery methods remain in flux, many new teaching innovations are emerging, which require comprehensive evaluation to ensure evidence-based teaching is maintained. Although grades are the predominant measure of 'learning', alternative metrics can assess more nuanced and meaningful outcomes. Two common predictors of students' three-dimensional understanding of the body and depth of learning are visuospatial abilities and approaches to learning, respectively. This study evaluated and compared the relative predictive po

Cause or effect? The relationship between student perception of the medical school learning environment and academic performance on USMLE Step 1.

BACKGROUND: A school's learning environment is believed to influence academic performance yet few studies have evaluated this association controlling for prior academic ability, an important factor since students who do well in school tend to rate their school's environment more highly than students who are less academically strong. AIM: To evaluate the effect of student perception of the learning environment on their performance on a standardized licensing test while controlling for prior academic ability. METHODS: We measured perception of the learning environment after the first year of m

Influence of a past history of Gambian sleeping sickness on physical growth, sexual maturity and academic performance of children in Fontem, Cameroon.

Little has been published on the long-term complications of Gambian sleeping sickness (GSS) following treatment. A case-control study to compare physical growth, sexual maturity and academic performance of children with and without a past history of GSS was therefore conducted. The study took place over a period of 6 months, in the 10 villages of the Fontem GSS focus, which is known to be very endemic for the disease. Overall, 100 young subjects (aged 6-20 years) with a past history of GSS were pair-matched for age (+/- 5 months), sex, place of residence, and socio-economic and cultural backgr
