Objective Measures of Physical Activity in Rural Communities: Factors Associated With a Valid Wear and Lessons Learned.

BACKGROUND: Compared with urban/suburban counterparts, rural communities experience lower rates of physical activity (PA) and higher rates of chronic disease. Promoting PA is important for disease prevention but requires reliable and valid measurement of PA. However, little is known about effectively collecting objective PA data in rural communities. Using data from a cluster randomized trial (Heartland Moves), which aims to increase PA in rural Missouri, this study explored factors associated with successful objective PA data collection and presents lessons learned. METHODS: Baseline survey

Analysis of Stiffness of Clamped Joints versus Bolted Joints in Steel Structures by Means of Accelerometers and Shaking Table Tests.

This work analyzes the difference in stiffness in a steel laboratory structure using clamped joints or bolted joints and analyzes if the stiffness varies in the same way when the frame is subjected to external dynamic loads that bring the joint materials to their yield strength. To make this comparison, the differences between clamp joint and bolted joint were evaluated using a novel methodology based on the analysis of the structure's natural frequencies from accelerometers. To perform this comparison, several laboratory tests were carried out on a frame made by clamped joints and the same fr

A Vision-Based Algorithm for Assessing Head and Hand Tremor: Development and Validation Against IMU Sensors.

Tremor is the most prevalent human movement disorder, characterized by rhythmic oscillations of a body part. Accurate tremor assessment is essential for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment evaluation. Traditional methods rely on accelerometry-based measurements, requiring direct sensor attachment, which may be impractical in some settings. We developed a novel algorithm for detecting tremors from video recordings based on the motion of the center of mass and implemented it in the open-source software TremAn3. Motion data were extracted from 2D video recordings of both hands and the head, and

Accelerometer-based estimation of respiratory rate using principal component analysis and autocorrelation.

Objective.Respiratory rate (RR) is an important vital sign but is often neglected. Multiple technologies exist for RR monitoring but are either expensive or impractical. Tri-axial accelerometry represents a minimally intrusive solution for continuous RR monitoring, however, the method has not been validated in a wide RR range. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the agreement between RR estimation from a tri-axial accelerometer and a reference method in a wide RR range.Approach.Twenty-five healthy participants were recruited. For accelerometer RR estimation, the accelerometer w

Rest tremor correlates with reduced contralateral striatal dopamine transporter binding in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: In vivo dopamine transporter imaging is a useful tool for distinguishing nigrostriatal pathologies (e.g. Parkinson's disease) from other causes of tremor. However, while many of the motoric features of Parkinson's disease (e.g. bradykinesia, rigidity, hypomimia) correlate well with reduced striatal dopamine transporter binding, the same relationship has not been demonstrated for tremor. We investigated the relationship between striatal dopamine transporter binding and quantitative measures of tremor. METHODS: 23 participants with Parkinson's disease underwent standardised clinic

Kinematic analysis of thalamic versus subthalamic neurostimulation in postural and intention tremor.

Deep brain stimulation of the thalamus (thalamic DBS) is an established therapy for medically intractable essential tremor and tremor caused by multiple sclerosis. In both disorders, motor disability results from complex interaction between kinetic tremor and accompanying ataxia with voluntary movements. In clinical studies, the efficacy of thalamic DBS has been thoroughly assessed. However, the optimal anatomical target structure for neurostimulation is still debated and has never been analysed in conjunction with objective measurements of the different aspects of motor impairment. Asymmetry of tremor intensity and frequency in Parkinson's disease and essential tremor.

We investigated the asymmetry of tremor intensity, frequency and frequency dispersion of Parkinsonian (PT) and essential (ET) tremor using accelerometry. Data of the more and less trembling hands were statistically elaborated. We found that tremor intensity was significantly asymmetric not only in PT but also in ET, while frequency and frequency dispersion were symmetric in ET but asymmetric in PT. We conclude that bilateral assessment of frequency related tremor parameters may be used for differentiation between ET and PT, and provides further details on the central organization of tremor gen

Differences in prolonged walking intensity and duration between older people reporting difficulty, modifications or no difficulty in walking.

Older people report modifying their walking by slowing down speed or using walking aids to accommodate increased exertion and the decline in physical capacity. Self-reported walking modifications and difficulties are associated with daily walking accumulation; however, the relationship between self-reported walking ability and prolonged walking intensity and duration is not well understood. This cross-sectional study compared walking speed, duration, and changes in intensity during prolonged walking bout between older people self-reporting walking difficulty, modifications, or no difficulty in

The validity of smartphone-based spatiotemporal gait measurements during walking with and without head turns: Comparison with the GAITRite® system.

Smartphone accelerometry has potential to provide clinicians with specialized gait analysis not available in most clinical settings. The Gait&Balance Application (G&B App) uses smartphone accelerometry to assess spatiotemporal gait parameters under two conditions: walking looking straight ahead and walking with horizontal head turns. This study investigated the validity of G&B App gait parameters compared with the GAITRite® pressure-sensitive walkway. Healthy young and older adults (age range 21-85 years) attended a single session where a smartphone was secured over the lumbosacral junction. D

Supervised Learning of Physical Activity Features From Functional Accelerometer Data.

OBJECTIVE: We propose a new health informatics framework to analyze physical activity (PA) from accelerometer devices. Accelerometry data enables scientists to extract personal digital features useful for precision health decision making. Existing methods in accelerometry data analysis typically begin with discretizing summary counts by certain fixed cutoffs into activity categories. One well-known limitation is that the chosen cutoffs are often validated under restricted settings, and cannot be generalizable across populations, devices, or studies. METHODS: We develop a data-driven approach

Physical Activity Scaled to Preferred Walking Speed as a Predictor of Walking Difficulty in Older Adults: A 2-Year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The usual accelerometry-based measures of physical activity (PA) are dependent on physical performance. We investigated the associations between PA relative to walking performance and the prevalence and incidence of early and advanced walking difficulties compared to generally used measures of PA. METHODS: Perceived walking difficulty was evaluated in 994 community-dwelling participants at baseline (age 75, 80, or 85 years) and 2 years later over 2 km (early difficulty) and 500 m (advanced difficulty). We used a thigh-mounted accelerometer to assess moderate-to-vigorous PA, daily

Daily physical activity is negatively associated with thyroid hormone levels, inflammation, and immune system markers among men and women in the NHANES dataset.

The acute effects of exercise on metabolic energy expenditure and inflammation are well studied, but the long-term effects of regular daily physical activity on metabolic and endocrine effects are less clear. Further, prior studies investigating the impact of daily physical activity in large cohorts have generally relied on self-reported activity. Here, we used the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to investigate the relationship between daily physical activity and both thyroid and immune activity. Daily physical activity was assessed through accelerometry or accel
