Alberta family integrated careTM: a review of a family-integrated care model in neonatal intensive care.

Alberta Family Integrated CareTM (AB-FICareTM) is a standardized, theory-driven model that integrates parents as primary caregivers in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs); however, its clinical effectiveness, implementation determinants, and cross-setting applicability require systematic synthesis. This narrative review aims to evaluate the evidence on AB-FICareTM in Level II NICUs, focusing on neonatal and parental outcomes, implementation barriers and facilitators, and transferability to healthcare systems with distinct organizational and cultural contexts. Following SANRA guidelines, we s

Region-specific interobserver agreement of the Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) is a widely used scoring system for evaluating ischemic stroke to determine therapeutic strategy. However, there is variation in the interobserver agreement of ASPECTS. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the interobserver agreement of total and regional ASPECTS. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in the Web of Sciences, PubMed, and Scopus databases to identify relevant studies. Inclusion criteria were studies of noncontrast CT performed within 24 hours of ischemic stroke in the mi

Epidemiological Characterization of Group B Streptococcus Infections in Alberta, Canada: An Update from 2014 to 2020.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading cause of invasive neonatal disease. Epidemiological surveillance of GBS is important to determine cumulative incidence, antimicrobial resistance rates, and maternal and neonatal disease prevention. In this study, we present an update on GBS epidemiology in Alberta, Canada, from 2014 to 2020. Over the 7-year period, 1,556 GBS isolates were submitted to the Alberta Public Health Laboratory for capsular polysaccharide (CPS) typing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We analyzed the distribution of CPS types in Alberta and found CPS types III (23.6%),

Whole-Genome Analysis of Streptococcus pneumoniae Serotype 4 Causing Outbreak of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, Alberta, Canada.

After the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines for children, invasive pneumococcal disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 4 declined in all ages in Alberta, Canada, but it has reemerged and spread in adults in Calgary, primarily among persons who are experiencing homelessness or who use illicit drugs. We conducted clinical and molecular analyses to examine the cases and isolates. Whole-genome sequencing analysis indicated relatively high genetic variability of serotype 4 isolates. Phylogenetic analysis identified 1 emergent sequence type (ST) 244 lineage primarily assoc

Sweet and sour: A quantitative analysis of methane emissions in contrasting Alberta, Canada, heavy oil developments.

Cold heavy oil production with or without sand (CHOPS, or CHOP) are prevalent methods of oil extraction in western Canada. CHOP(S) sites account for over 40% of all reported vented methane (CH4) from oil production in Alberta, and high rates of CH4 emissions have been confirmed in independent measurement studies. In this study, we used truck-based surveys coupled with qualitative optical gas imaging (OGI) to quantify and characterize methane emission rates and sources at nearly 1350 and 940 well sites in two major CHOP(S) developments respectively in 2016 and 2018. The studies were conducted i

Tracking petrogenic hydrocarbons in lakes of the Peace-Athabasca Delta in Alberta, Canada using petroleum biomarkers.

The Peace-Athabasca Delta (PAD) receives a mixture of hydrocarbons from biogenic, pyrogenic, and petrogenic processes. Source apportionment in the PAD has focussed on polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), which are ubiquitous in the environment and susceptible to weathering. In contrast, petroleum biomarkers of terpanes, hopanes, and steranes are degradation-resistant organic compounds found uniquely in petroleum products that can identify the input and origin of petrogenic hydrocarbons (PHCs). We provide an analysis of environmentally-relevant PHCs (including n-alkanes, PACs, and petroleum bi

Chronic Q Fever in Alberta: A Case of Coxiella burnetii Mycotic Aneurysm and Concomitant Vertebral Osteomyelitis.

Chronic Q fever is a potentially life-threatening infection from the intracellular, Gram-negative Coxiella burnetii. It presents most commonly as endocarditis or vascular infection in people with underlying cardiac or vascular disease. We discuss a case of a 67-year-old male with Coxiella burnetii vascular infection of a perirenal abdominal aortic graft. The patient had a history of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair 5 years earlier. He presented with a 12 × 6 × 8 cm perirenal pseudoaneurysm and concomitant L1, L2, and L3 vertebral body discitis. He underwent an open repair which reveal

Evaluation of antimicrobial resistance profiles of Salmonella isolates from broiler chickens at slaughter in Alberta, Canada.

Antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella species are threatening to become a serious public health problem. Therefore, surveillance and prudent use of antimicrobials is needed in both the agricultural and human health sectors. The aim of this study was to describe the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Salmonella isolates recovered from healthy broiler chickens at slaughter from November 2004 to April 2005. Salmonella isolates recovered from 36 broiler flocks in Alberta, Canada, were serotyped and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility against 15 antimicrobials. Of 272 Salmonella isolates tes

Sulfate adsorption properties of acid-sensitive soils in the Athabasca oil sands region in Alberta, Canada.

The risk of soil acidification is high in the Athabasca oil sands region (AOSR) in Alberta, Canada, due to elevated SO(2) emission and the resultant acid deposition to sensitive, coarse-textured soils. Understanding the sulfate adsorption characteristics of soils sensitive to acidification will help establish critical loads of acid deposition in AOSR. Sulfate adsorption properties were evaluated and relationships between sulfate adsorption and soil properties were examined for soils in two contrasting watersheds (NE7 and SM8) in AOSR. The experimental data fitted well to both the Langmuir and

Geochemical interactions between process-affected water from oil sands tailings ponds and North Alberta surficial sediments.

In Northern Alberta, the placement of out-of-pit oil sands tailings ponds atop natural buried sand channels is becoming increasingly common. Preliminary modeling of such a site suggests that process-affected (PA) pond water will infiltrate through the underlying clay till aquitard, reaching the sand channel. However, the impact of seepage upon native sediments and groundwater resources is not known. The goal of this study is to investigate the role of adsorption and ion exchange reactions in the clay till and their effect on the attenuation or release of inorganic species. This was evaluated u

Stability of prevalence rates of anorectal malformations in the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System 1990-2004.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Anorectal malformations appeared to be increasing in the province of Alberta, Canada. To assess whether this was a significant trend, with the possibility of these having a teratogenic origin, we examined the frequency of anorectal malformations over a 15-year period. METHODS: We examined the records of the Alberta Congenital Anomaly Surveillance System, which is a semiactive surveillance system using the British Paediatric Association and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health expansions of the International Classification of Diseases-Ninth Revision and the Int

Botfly (Diptera:Oestridae) parasitism of Ord's kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii) at Suffield National Wildlife Area, Alberta, Canada.

During field study of Ord's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii) at Suffield National Wildlife Area, Alberta, Canada, a high prevalence of parasitism by botfly (Diptera: Oestridae) larvae was observed. Botflies have not previously been documented as parasites of kangaroo rats. Botfly parasitism could have a significant impact on the growth, survival, and reproduction of Ord's kangaroo rat, which is considered a vulnerable species in Canada. Therefore, it is important to investigate how botfly parasitism varies with season and with gender or age of host. In 1995, 525 individual kangaroo rats were cau
