Purification and some properties of aldehyde reductases from pig liver.

Two aldehyde reductases (EC 1.1.1.2), I and II, have been isolated from pig liver. Both are monomeric (Mr approximately equal to 35 000) and NADPH-dependent. Their activity is inhibited by barbiturates. The enzymes reduce essentially aromatic aldehydes, with a preference for those bearing an electron-withdrawing group in the para position. Substrates with a carboxyl group are specially good substrates for reductase I. This may indicate the presence of a positively charged group in the substrate binding site. The binding of NADPH to reductase I causes a red shift of the coenzyme absorption; thi

Homogeneous copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols and aldehydes: mechanistic insights and recent advances.

Copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols and aldehydes has become a key transformation for the sustainable synthesis of carbonyl compounds, combining high efficiency with the use of molecular oxygen as a benign terminal oxidant. Owing to its earth-abundance, low cost, low toxicity, and versatile redox properties, copper offers a compelling alternative to traditional noble metal catalysts and stoichiometric oxidation methods. This review highlights the evolution of copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols, emphasizing two distinct mechanistic regimes: nitroxyl radical-mediated syste

Cavity-arbitrated enantioinduction by calix[4]arene-annexed BINOL catalysts for cyanosilylation of aldehydes.

We report a cavity-controlled catalytic strategy for the highly enantioselective cyanosilylation of aldehydes using a BINOL-functionalized calix[4]arene catalyst. The catalyst combines a chiral BINOL-derived active site with a well-defined supramolecular cavity, enabling cooperative substrate binding and asymmetric induction. Systematic catalyst design revealed a strong dependence of enantioselectivity on cavity dimensions, highlighting the crucial role of geometric confinement in stereocontrol.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Reductive Carboxylation of Aldehydes/Ketones for the Synthesis of α-Arylalkanoic Acids.

α-Arylalkanoic acids are among the most extensively used classes of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in clinical practice. Their significant role in medicinal chemistry has attracted sustained research interest over the past decades. In this paper, an efficient one-pot protocol for the synthesis of α-arylalkanoic acids using readily available aldehydes/ketones and CO2 as the starting materials was established. This protocol contains a sequence of Pudovik reaction, phospha-Brook rearrangement and cobalt-catalyzed carboxylation. The plausible mechanism of this reaction was investiga

Decarboxylative Cross-Acyl Coupling of Carboxylic Acids with Aldehydes Enabled by Nickel/Photoredox Catalysis.

We present a general method for accessing unsymmetrical alkyl-aryl and alkyl-alkyl ketones via nickel/photoredox-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-acyl coupling reactions between carboxylic acids and aldehydes without the need for an additional preactivation procedure. Specifically, by using the peroxide as both an oxidant and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reagent, we achieved the unprecedented combination of oxidative single electron transfer (SET) of carboxylates and HAT of aldehydes, in which the generated alkyl and acyl radicals were chemoselectively coupled by nickel catalysis. This method f

Efficient hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes catalysed by a well-defined PNNP-rhenium complex.

Well-defined rhenium complexes bearing a tetradentate PNNP ligand were developed for the first time. These new complexes exhibit much better performance in catalytic hydrogenation of carbonyl derivatives into alcohols compared to the corresponding aminophosphine-ligand-constituted complex (o-PPh2C6H4CH2NH2)2Re(CO)2Cl. Under the optimized conditions, the highest turnover frequency and turnover number can be up to 4041 h-1 and 61008, respectively.

Oxidative Alkynylation of Alcohols or Aldehydes Using RuHCl(CO)(PPh3)3: Ynones Made Easy.

Structurally diverse alcohols (or aldehydes) react with (triisopropylsilyl)acetylene to form α,β-acetylenic ketones (ynones) in good to excellent yield. This method for oxidative alkynylation exploits the commercially available air-stable precatalyst RuHCl(CO)(PPh3)3 rather than the iodide-bound precatalyst RuI(η3-C3H5)(CO)3, which is sensitive and not available for purchase.

Sorption Kinetic Parameters from Nanomechanical Sensing for Discrimination of 2-Nonenal from Saturated Aldehydes.

Nanomechanical sensors have gained significant attention as promising platforms for artificial olfaction. Since sorption kinetic parameters that can be estimated from the sensing signals of nanomechanical sensors reflect the chemical and physicochemical interactions between the odorant and receptor material, the parameters can be utilized for the direct discrimination of each odorant. In this study, we demonstrated the discrimination of 20 vapors, including hydrocarbons, alcohols, organic acids, ketones, and aldehydes, which are reported as human body odor components, using the parameters extr

Insights Into the Role of π-Electrons of Aromatic Aldehydes in Passivating Perovskite Defects.

Carbonyl-containing aromatic ketones or aldehydes have been demonstrated to be effective defect passivators for perovskite films to improve performances of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). It has been claimed that both π-electrons within aromatic units and carbonyl groups can, separately, interact with ionic defects, which, however, causes troubles in understanding the passivation mechanism of those aromatic ketone/aldehyde molecules. Herein, we clarify the effect of both moieties in one molecule on the defect passivation by investigating three aromatic aldehydes with varied conjugation planes,

Computational Design of an Electro-Organocatalyst for Conversion of CO2 into Long Chain Aldehydes.

Density functional theory calculations employing a hybrid implicit/explicit solvation method were used to demonstrate that an electro-organocatalyst designed in our previous work for reducing CO2 to formaldehyde could also be capable of coupling formaldehyde to form long chain aldehydes. The catalytic activity is enabled by an electron-rich vicinal enediamine (>N-C═C-N<) backbone that activates formaldehyde by reversing the polarity on the carbon atom, enabling it to act as a nucleophile in the subsequent aldol addition step. The catalyst then enables reductive dehydroxylation of the aldol add

Catalytic Asymmetric Construction of α,α-Diaryl Aldehydes via Oxo-Hydroarylation of Terminal Alkynes.

Chiral aldehydes containing a tertiary stereogenic center are versatile building blocks in organic chemistry. In particular, such structural motifs bearing an α,α-diaryl moiety are very challenging scaffolds and their efficient asymmetric synthesis is not reported. In this work, a phosphoric acid-catalyzed enantioselective synthesis of α,α-diaryl aldehydes from simple terminal alkynes is presented. This approach yields a wide range of highly enolizable α,α-diaryl aldehydes in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities. Facile transformations of the products, as well as an efficient synthe

NHC-Catalyzed Synthesis of α-Sulfonyl Ketones via Radical-Mediated Sulfonyl Methylation of Aldehydes.

An N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed facile assembly of α-sulfonyl ketones has been successfully developed through a radical-mediated sulfonyl methylation of readily available aldehydes. This protocol involves the effective single-electron transfer reduction of α-iodosulfones by NHC-bound Breslow intermediates, thus allowing a subsequent radical-radical coupling to afford the target compounds. Moreover, the catalytic system was found to be equally effective for difunctionalization of styrenes and 1,3-enynes via a three-component radical relay process.

Role of NRF2 and reactive aldehydes in acute cellular rejection in liver transplant recipients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the level of oxidative stress and antioxidative response in the transplanted liver and its role in acute cellular rejection (ACR). Particular attention was paid to ACR diagnosis in patients with hepatitis C (HCV), as histopathological features of ACR and viral disease recurrence overlap. METHODS: This retrospective study included 40 liver transplant patients who underwent liver transplantation with two consecutive liver biopsies performed during one hospitalization period: 1.) initial biopsy of the donor liver (before implantation) and 2.) indication biopsy (after suspe

Electrochemical Arylation of Aldehydes, Ketones, and Alcohols: from Cathodic Reduction to Convergent Paired Electrolysis.

Arylation of carbonyls, one of the most common approaches toward alcohols, has received tremendous attention, as alcohols are important feedstocks and building blocks in organic synthesis. Despite great progress, there is still a great gap to develop an ideal arylation method featuring mild conditions, good functional group tolerance, and readily available starting materials. We now show that electrochemical arylation can fill the gap. By taking advantage of synthetic electrochemistry, commercially available aldehydes (ketones) and benzylic alcohols can be readily arylated to provide a general

C-H Alkylation of Aldehydes by Merging TBADT Hydrogen Atom Transfer with Nickel Catalysis.

Catalyst controlled site-selective C-H functionalization is a challenging but powerful tool in organic synthesis. Polarity-matched and sterically controlled hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) provides an excellent opportunity for site-selective functionalization. As such, the dual Ni/photoredox system was successfully employed to generate acyl radicals from aldehydes via selective formyl C-H activation and subsequently cross-coupled to generate ketones, a ubiquitous structural motif present in the vast majority of natural and bioactive molecules. However, only a handful of examples that are constrai

Reductive amination of ketones/aldehydes with amines using BH3N(C2H5)3 as a reductant.

Herein, we report the first example of efficient reductive amination of ketones/aldehydes with amines using BH3N(C2H5)3 as a catalyst and a reductant under mild conditions, affording various tertiary and secondary amines in excellent yields. A mechanistic study indicates that BH3N(C2H5)3 plays a dual function role of promoting imine and iminium formation and serving as a reductant in reductive amination.

Pincer-Supported Gallium Complexes for the Catalytic Hydroboration of Aldehydes, Ketones and Carbon Dioxide.

Gallium hydrides stabilised by primary and secondary amines are scarce due to their propensity to eliminate dihydrogen. Consequently, their reactivity has received limited attention. The synthesis of two novel gallium hydride complexes HGa(THF)[ON(H)O] and H2 Ga[μ2 -ON(H)O]Ga[ON(H)O] ([ON(H)O]2- =N,N-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-phenoxy)amine) is described and their reactivity towards aldehydes and ketones is explored. These reactions afford alkoxide-bridged dimers through 1,2-hydrogallation reactions. The gallium hydrides can be regenerated through Ga-O/B-H metathesis from the reaction of such dim

[Mes-B-TMP]+ borinium cation initiated cyanosilylation and catalysed hydrosilylation of ketones and aldehydes.

Two aryl amino borinium cations derived from Cl(Mes)B-NR2 (NR2 = TMP, HMDS) faced divergent outcomes. As the HMDS-substituted one underwent methyl migration from silicon to boron transforming the putative borinium ion to a silylium ion, [Mes-B-TMP]+ can initiate cyanosilylation and catalyse hydrosilylation of ketones and aldehydes.

Hydrosilylation of Aldehydes and Ketones Catalyzed by a 2-Iminopyrrolyl Alkyl-Manganese(II) Complex.

A well-defined and very active single-component manganese(II) catalyst system for the hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones is presented. First, the reaction of 5-(2,4,6-iPr3C6H2)-2-[N-(2,6-iPr2C6H3)formimino]pyrrolyl potassium (KL) and [MnCl2(Py)2] afforded the binuclear 2-iminopyrrolyl manganese(II) pyridine chloride complex [Mn2{κ2N,N'-5-(2,4,6-iPr3C6H2)-NC4H2-2-C(H)═N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)}2(Py)2(μ-Cl)2] 1. Low-temperature (< 200 °C) degradation of electronic nicotine delivery system liquids generates toxic aldehydes.

Electronic cigarette usage has spiked in popularity over recent years. The enhanced prevalence has consequently resulted in new health concerns associated with the use of these devices. Degradation of the liquids used in vaping have been identified as a concern due to the presence of toxic compounds such as aldehydes in the aerosols. Typically, such thermochemical conversions are reported to occur between 300 and 400 °C. Herein, the low-temperature thermal degradation of propylene glycol and glycerol constituents of e-cigarette vapors are explored for the first time by natural abundance 13C NM
