Hypobaric hypoxia is widely recognized as a prominent risk factor for high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), which contributes to the exacerbation of multiple pathological mechanisms, including oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, disruption of blood-;brain barrier integrity, neuroinflammation, and neuronal apoptosis. Among these mechanisms, abnormalities in oxygen metabolism, including hypoxia, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction, play pivotal roles in the pathophysiology of HACE. In this review, our objective is to enhance our comprehension of the underlying molecular mecha

Pregnancy encompasses the portion of the life cycle subjected to among the strongest of evolutionary pressures owing to the nature of mammalian reproduction and the characteristics of the human species. The pioneering work of early investigators such as Joseph Barcroft, Donald Barron, Giacomo Meschia, James Metcalfe and others laid the groundwork for identifying constraints affecting each of the three major players in mammalian reproduction-fetus, placenta and mother-for meeting the increased oxygen and other nutrient demands required for fetal growth and maternal wellbeing. The papers compris

BACKGROUND: Polycythemia is a common medical problem, frequently acquired and reactive to secondary conditions. High-altitude-associated hypoxia contributes to the greater prevalence of polycythemia at altitude. Primary clonal polycythemia vera (PV), even though it is rare, requires a different therapeutic approach. Suspicion of PV usually drives the diagnostic workup of polycythemia.
METHODS: In this retrospective lab record study, we collected all JAK2 tests requested over a three-year period. We analyzed requests that were made for the evaluation of polycythemia. Complete blood count (CBC)

High altitude retinopathy (HAR) is a common ocular disorder that occurs on ascent to high altitude. There are many clinical symptoms, retinal vascular dilatation, retinal edema and hemorrhage are common. These usually do not or slightly affect vision; rarely, severe cases develop serious or permanent vision loss. At present, the research progress of HAR mainly focuses on hemodynamic changes, blood-retinal barrier damage, oxidative stress and inflammatory response. Although the related studies on HAR are limited, it shows that HAR still belongs to hypoxia, and hypobaric hypoxia plays an aggrava

Hypoxia, centralization of blood in pulmonary vessels, and increased cardiac output during physical exertion are the pathogenetic pathways of acute pulmonary edema observed during exposure to extraordinary environments. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of breath-hold diving at altitude, which exposes simultaneously to several of the stimuli mentioned above. To this aim, 11 healthy male experienced divers (age 18-52y) were evaluated (by Doppler echocardiography, lung echography to evaluate ultrasound lung B-lines (BL), hemoglobin saturation, arterial blood pressure, fractional NO (Nitro

Low oxygen levels and extremely cold weather in high-altitude environments requires more energy intake to maintain body temperature in animals. However, little is known about the characteristics of cecal and ileac microbiota in Tibetan chicken and how the high and low altitude environments affect the gut microbiota communities in Tibetan chicken. In the present study, In the present study, Tibetan chickens (Group HA, 3572 m, 578.5 Pa) and their introduced flatland counterparts (Group LA, 580 m, 894.6 Pa) in the cecum and ileum to identify the possible bacterial species that are helpful for the

BACKGROUND: High altitude retinopathy (HAR) includes a number of diseases related to high altitude such as acute mountain sickness (AMS), high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). High altitude retinopathy is mainly characterized by retinal hemorrhages, usually sparing the macular region, a condition specifically known as high altitude retinal hemorrhages (HARH). The pathogenesis of HARH is unclear. Many studies show that lack of oxygen causes an inadequate autoregulation of retinal circulation, causing vascular incompetence. Other retinal changes described

BACKGROUND: Climbing and trekking at altitude are common recreational and military activities. Physiological effects of altitude are hypoxia and hyperventilation. The hyperventilatory response to altitude may cause respiratory muscle fatigue and reduce sustained submaximal exercise. Voluntary isocapnic hyperpnea respiratory muscle training (VIHT) improves exercise endurance at sea level and at depth. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that VIHT would improve exercise time at altitude [3600 m (11,811 ft)] compared to control and placebo groups.
METHODS: Subjects pedaled an er

Acute high-altitude illness is an encompassing term for the range of pathology that the unacclimatised individual can develop at increased altitude. This includes acute mountain sickness, high-altitude cerebral oedema and high-altitude pulmonary oedema. These conditions represent an increasing clinical problem as more individuals are exposed to the hypobaric hypoxic environment of high altitude for both work and leisure. In this review of acute high-altitude illness, the epidemiology, risk factors and pathophysiology are explored, before their prevention and treatment are discussed. Appropriat

Travelers to high altitude may have disturbed sleep due to periodic breathing with frequent central apneas. We tested whether a mask with added dead space could reduce the central apneas of altitude. 16 subjects were recruited, age 18-35, residing at 4600 ft (1400 m). They each slept one night with full polysomnographic monitoring, including end tidal CO2, in a normobaric hypoxia tent simulating 12,000 ft. (3658 m) altitude. Those who had a central apnea index (CAI) >20/h returned for a night in the tent for dead space titration, during which they slept with increasing amounts of dead space, a

High-altitude studies offer insight into the evolutionary processes and physiological mechanisms affecting the early phases of the human lifespan. Chronic hypoxia slows fetal growth and reduces the pregnancy-associated rise in uterine artery (UA) blood flow. Multigenerational vs. shorter-term high-altitude residents are protected from the altitude-associated reductions in UA flow and fetal growth. Presently unknown is whether this fetal-growth protection is due to the greater delivery or metabolism of oxygen, glucose or other substrates or to other considerations such as mechanical factors pro

Exposure to high altitude can lead to acute mountain sickness (AMS) and high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). In this study we investigated the effect of high altitude on neurocognitive function and S100B release. Increased S100B release has been hypothesized to signify a loss of integrity in the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Seven healthy volunteers trekked to Capanna Regina Margherita (4554 m above sea level) in the Monte Rosa massif. During ascent and descent, five test events were undertaken; participants underwent neurocognitive testing, Lake Louise scoring (LLS), and blood sampling to measur

People live in the mountains distributed across the world and are exposed to reduced inspired oxygen and lower barometric pressure along with other factors that lead to high-altitude diseases. The present study was conducted to examine what extent of marketed medicines used in the management of high-altitude sickness has been tested for their genotoxic activity. Comet assay or the single-cell gel electrophoresis was utilized to evaluate genotoxicity of the six medicines on human peripheral whole blood cells and isolated lymphocytes at the concentrations 250 microg/mL, 500 microg/mL and 1 mg/mL

High altitude changes human physiology and can result in illnesses such as acute mountain sickness, high-altitude cerebral edema, and high-altitude pulmonary edema. The physiological impacts of high-altitude illnesses occur secondary to extravasation of fluid from the intravascular space into the extravascular space during a rapid ascent. Headache, hearing disturbances, vestibular disturbances, epistaxis, sleep apnea, coughing, respiratory tract infections, and nasal obstruction are main ear, nose, and throat complaints of individuals travelling to high altitude. These complaints can cause del
