Towards an attract-and-kill strategy for sustainable tick control: combined effects of Metarhizium anisopliae and phytochemical attractants from Senna didymobotrya against Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus.

Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus are ticks of veterinary and zoonotic importance in sub-Saharan Africa. Presently, their control mainly relies on synthetic acaricides, which are limited by resistance and environmental harm. Sustainable alternatives, such as combining tick attractants with entomopathogenic fungi in attract-and-kill strategies, are therefore needed. This study aimed to determine (i) the effect of attractants from Senna didymobotrya (methanol extract of S. didymobotrya flowers, squalene, linoleic acid, and squalene: linoleic acid (1:1) blend) on Metarhizium a

Developmental stages and molecular phylogeny of Hepatozoon fitzsimonsi (Dias 1953) (Adeleorina: Hepatozoidae) in tortoises Stigmochelys pardalis (Cryptodira: Testudinidae) and ticks of the genus Amblyomma (Acari: Ixodidae) from South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Hepatozoon fitzsimonsi (Dias, 1953) is a frequently found haemogregarine of southern African tortoises. At the time of this species' reassignment from the genus Haemogregarina to Hepatozoon, developmental stages such as sporocysts and sporozoites were observed in ticks associated with H. fitzsimonsi parasitised and non-parasitised tortoises. It was thus suggested that ticks may act as the potential vectors for this parasite. However, this earlier research was unable to confirm the identity of these sporogonic stages using molecular markers. In a separate study aimed at identifying

Detection of Rickettsia tamurae-like and other spotted fever group rickettsiae in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) associated with wild birds in the Western Amazon, Brazil.

Ticks are vectors for several pathogens, including bacteria belonging to the Rickettsia genus, such as Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia parkeri, the causative agents of spotted fever. The aim of the present study was to investigate the tick species richness and rickettsial agents associated with wild birds captured in the Humaita Forest Reserve, Acre, in the Western Amazon region. Wild birds were captured with ornithological nets for visual inspection with the purpose of collecting ticks, which were identified through morphological analyses and molecular tests for several genes (12S rDNA,

Records of ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on humans and distribution of spotted-fever cases and its tick vectors in Paraná State, southern Brazil.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is the deadliest rickettsiosis in the world. Although the epidemiology of the disease has been established in Brazil, there are still limited data available on distribution of tick vectors and tick species parasitizing humans in the country, particularly in Paraná State. The State of Paraná is located in the southern region of the country and is covered by two biomes: Atlantic rainforest and Cerrado. Thus, the aims of this study were i) to map the distribution of SF tick vectors, ii) to describe and map the distribution of human parasitism by ticks, and iii) to ma

Phylogenetic Evidence for the Existence of Multiple Strains of Rickettsia parkeri in the New World.

The bacterium Rickettsia parkeri has been reported to infect ticks of the "Amblyomma maculatum species complex" in the New World, where it causes spotted fever illness in humans. In South America, three additional rickettsial strains, namely, Atlantic rainforest, NOD, and Parvitarsum, have been isolated from the ticks Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma nodosum, and Amblyomma parvitarsum, respectively. These three strains are phylogenetically closely related to R. parkeri, Rickettsia africae, and Rickettsia sibirica Herein, we performed a robust phylogenetic analysis encompassing 5 genes (gltA, ompA, v
