Exploring Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in the Americas, 2001-2011.

METHODS: Cases reported in the period of 2001-2011 from 14/18 CL endemic countries were included in this study by using two spreadsheet to collect the data. Two indicators were analyzed: CL cases and incidence rate. The local regression method was used to analyze case trends and incidence rates for all the studied period, and for 2011 the spatial distribution of each indicator was analyzed by quartile and stratified into four groups. RESULTS: From 2001-2011, 636,683 CL cases were reported by 14 countries and with an increase of 30% of the reported cases. The average incidence rate in the Amer

The Quest for a Vaccine Against Coccidioidomycosis: A Neglected Disease of the Americas.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) is a disease caused by inhalation of Coccidioides spp. This neglected disease has substantial public health impact despite its geographic restriction to desert areas of the southwestern U.S., Mexico, Central and South America. The incidence of this infection in California and Arizona has been increasing over the past fifteen years. Several large cities are within the endemic region in the U.S. Coccidioidomycosis accounts for 25,000 hospital admissions per year in California. While most cases of coccidioidomycosis resolve spontaneously, up to 40% are severe eno

Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Enterobius vermicularis (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) in the Prehistoric Americas.

Investigations of Enterobius sp. infection in prehistory have produced a body of data that can be used to evaluate the geographic distribution of infection through time in the Americas. Regional variations in prevalence are evident. In North America, 119 pinworm positive samples were found in 1,112 samples from 28 sites with a prevalence of 10.7%. Almost all of the positive samples came from agricultural sites. From Brazil, 0 pinworm positive samples were found in 325 samples from 7 sites. For the Andes region, 22 pinworm positive samples were found in 411 samples from 26 sites for a prevalenc

Gestational syphilis and stillbirth in the Americas: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of reported estimates of the association between gestational syphilis (GS) and stillbirth in the Americas region. METHODS: Cochrane Library, Embase, LILACS, MEDLINE/PubMed, PLOS, and ScienceDirect were searched for original research studies quantifying the relationship between GS and stillbirth in the region. A final sample of eight studies was selected. A cumulative meta-analysis plus four subgroup meta-analyses of study data on the association between maternal syphilis during pregnancy and stillbirth were conducted. The four meta-a

[Tick-borne rickettsioses in the Americas: clinical and epidemiological advances, and diagnostic challenges].

Rickettsioses are a group of zoonotic diseases caused by strict intracellular bacteria of the genus Rickettsia and Orientia which belong to the Rickettsiaceae family. Their ecology is influenced by environmental factors and the presence of specific vectors that determine the establishment and epidemiology in different world regions. In America, during the 20 th century, only three of these diseases were recognized: Rocky Mountain spotted fever, epidemic typhus and endemic typhus. However, since 2000, more than 10 different species that had previously been unknown in this continent have been de

Innovation for the 'bottom 100 million': eliminating neglected tropical diseases in the Americas.

An estimated 100 million people in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region live on less than US$2 per day, while another 46 million people in the US live below that nation's poverty line. Almost all of the 'bottom 100 million' people suffer from at least one neglected tropical disease (NTD), including one-half of the poorest people in the region infected with hookworms, 10% with Chagas disease, and up to 1-2% with dengue, schistosomiasis, and/or leishmaniasis. In the US, NTDs such as Chagas disease, cysticercosis, toxocariasis, and trichomoniasis are also common among poor populations. T

International programs and veterinary public health in the Americas--success, challenges, and possibilities.

The veterinary public health (VPH) program at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) began in 1949 when an arrangement with the newly founded World Health Organization made PAHO its Regional Office for the Americas to serve as the specialized health agency both for the Organization of American States and the United Nations. It started as a Section of Veterinary Medicine to help eradicate rabies on both sides of the US-Mexico border, and PAHO grew to be the biggest VPH program in the world. By providing a political and technical base, PAHO assisted its member states to organize and develop

Origins of dengue type 2 viruses associated with increased pathogenicity in the Americas.

The recent emergence and spread of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the Americas have been a major source of concern. Efforts to control this disease are dependent on understanding the pathogenicity of dengue viruses and their transmission dynamics. Pathogenicity studies have been hampered by the lack of in vitro or in vivo models of severe dengue disease. Alternatively, molecular epidemiologic studies which associate certain dengue virus genetic types with severe dengue outbreaks may point to strains with increased pathogenicity. The comparison of nucleotide sequences (240 bp) from the E/NS1 gene

Eradication of wild poliovirus from the Americas: acute flaccid paralysis surveillance, 1988-1995.

In May 1985, the Pan American Health Organization proposed the goal of interruption of wild poliovirus transmission in the Western Hemisphere. An important component of the polio eradication strategy was conducting surveillance for cases of acute flaccid paralysis. Reported cases were thoroughly investigated, including the collection of stool samples for testing for the presence of wild poliovirus. The last patient with poliomyelitis due to wild poliovirus in the Americas had onset of paralysis on 23 August 1991 in Peru. Since then, >9000 cases of acute flaccid paralysis have been reported and

Epidemiology and risk factors of stroke in the Americas: a comprehensive narrative literature review.

Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability across the Americas, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries. According to the 2023 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study, the Americas recorded approximately 1.2 million incident strokes and 15.7 million prevalent cases. This narrative review synthesizes epidemiological evidence on stroke trends in the Americas, with emphasis on disparities in healthcare access. We integrated estimates from the GBD, peer-reviewed studies and national surveillance systems. Although age-standardized stroke rates declined after 1990, rec

COVID-19 morbidity and mortality in young people in selected countries of the Americas.

BACKGROUND: While COVID-19 primarily affected adults, the epidemiology among adolescents and young adults has been less explored. This study describes the burden, outcomes, and correlates of COVID-19 among people aged 10-24 years in selected countries in the Americas during the acute pandemic phase (2020-mid-2022). METHODS: We analyzed case-based surveillance data reported by 32 countries and territories to the Pan American Health Organization between January 2020 and July 2022. Confirmed and probable SARS-CoV-2 infections were included following WHO definitions. We described age, sex, and te

Territorial Persistence of Residual Plasmodium falciparum Transmission in the Americas: A One Health Perspective.

Malaria reduction in the Americas has slowed despite sustained elimination efforts, suggesting important changes in the spatial organization of residual transmission. This study evaluated whether declining Plasmodium falciparum incidence between 2000 and 2023 was associated with increasing geographic concentration, spatial clustering, and territorial persistence across the region, with detailed subnational analysis in Colombia. Temporal trends were assessed using segmented regression, geographic concentration using Gini and Herfindahl-Hirschman indices, and spatial dependence using Moran's I a

Quantifying, Understanding, and Correcting for Delays in Routine Dengue Case Reporting in the Americas.

Dengue virus is a growing public health challenge in the Americas, where endemic-epidemic transmission and unprecedented surges demand timely and accurate surveillance. Although real-time reporting, such as the Pan American Health Organization's (PAHO) database, is central to trend analysis, its case counts are subject to reporting delays and backfilling, which can lead to an initial underestimation of the size of an epidemic and result in insufficient control efforts. A novel, longitudinal dataset of weekly WHO PAHO dengue reports (2022-2025) was compiled, capturing successive data across 46

Diuretic and renal effects of spironolactone and heart failure hospitalizations: a TOPCAT Americas analysis.

AIMS: It is unclear whether spironolactone reduced heart failure (HF) hospitalizations in the Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure with an Aldosterone Antagonist (TOPCAT) trial through potential diuretic or other effects. We examined the effects of spironolactone on weight, diuretic use, and renal function, and their subsequent impact on outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed data from TOPCAT Americas (1767 patients with HF and preserved ejection fraction; 886 in spironolactone, 881 in placebo arm). We used mixed-effects models for serial data and shared frailty models to

Trans-Atlantic Spill Over: Deconstructing the Ecological Adaptation of Leishmania infantum in the Americas.

Pathogen fitness landscapes change when transmission cycles establish in non-native environments or spill over into new vectors and hosts. The introduction of Leishmania infantum in the Americas into the Neotropics during European colonization represents a unique case study to investigate the mechanisms of ecological adaptation of this important parasite. Defining the evolutionary trajectories that drive L. infantum fitness in this new environment are of great public health importance as they will allow unique insight into pathways of host/pathogen co-evolution and their consequences for regio
