Chemotherapy is limited in the treatment of leishmaniasis due to the toxic effects of drugs, low efficacy of alternative treatments, and resistance of the parasite. This work assesses the in vitro activity of flavopereirine on promastigote cultures of Leishmania amazonensis. In addition, an in silico evaluation of the physicochemical characteristics of this alkaloid is performed. The extract and fractions were characterized by thin-layer chromatography and HPLC-DAD, yielding an alkaloid identified by NMR. The antileishmanial activity and cytotoxicity were assayed by cell viability test (MTT).

A promising approach to accelerating the development of innovative anti-cancer therapies involves the evaluation of natural plant compounds. In this study, we focused on examining the effects of Warbugia ugandensis (W. ugandensis) methanolic root and stem infusions on the activity of five target genes-COX-2, CASPS-9, Bcl-xL, Bcl2, and 5-LOX-using colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines (Caco-2). The plant extracts were prepared for testing by dissolving them in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) after undergoing a step-by-step extraction process. Caco-2 cells were then treated with different concentrations

Due to the lack of effective pharmacotherapy options to treats Alzheimer's disease, new strategies have been approached in the search for multi-target molecules as therapeutic options. In this work, four indole alkaloids, geissoschizoline, geissoschizone, geissospermine, and 3',4',5',6'-tetradehydrogeissospermine were isolated from Geissospermum vellosii (Pao pereira) and evaluated for their anticholinesterase activities. While geissospermine inhibited only butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), the other alkaloids behaved as non-selective inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and BChE. In cell via

Hoodia gordonii extract (0, 5, 15 or 50mg/kg body weight/day, n=24 mice/group) was orally administered by gavage to female CD-1 mice from gestation days 5-17. On gestation day 18 the females were euthanized and examined. Treatment at 50mg/kg/day caused a marked reduction in feed intake and body weight gain. Feed consumption was sporadically reduced at 15 mg/kg/day. At 50 or 15 mg/kg/day fetal weights, ossification of some bones and full and empty uterus weights were reduced. There were no clear maternal or fetal effects at 5mg/kg/day. Reproductive indices were unaffected at all doses and there

Epilepsy is a common chronic disease of the central nervous system that can last for years or even decades, causing serious adverse effects on the body, mind, and psychology of patients. Traditional antiepileptic drugs can effectively control seizures, but because of large individual differences, serious adverse reactions, narrow therapeutic window and other shortcomings, more effective, new treatment drugs are looked for. Streptocaulon griffithii is a plant of Asclepiadaceae. 16-O-acetyldigitoxigenin (ACE) is a strong cardiac glycoside isolated from methanol extract of Streptocaulon griffithi
