Clinical Practice Recommendations for the Management of Obesity in the United Arab Emirates.

With rapid urbanisation and improved living conditions as a result of rising incomes in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, obesity has become a major and growing health problem for the region. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has a resident population of 9.3 million (in 2016), many of whom (85.5%) lived in urban areas and led sedentary lifestyles. Based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates for 2010, 25% of Emirati men and 40% of the women were obese. Obesity rates in this country has doubled from 16 to 34% compared to the year 2000, and severe obesity (BMI > 40 kg/m2) has rise

The Arabic version of the Juvenile Arthritis Multidimensional Assessment Report (JAMAR).

The Juvenile Arthritis Multidimensional Assessment Report (JAMAR) is a new parent/patient reported outcome measure that enables a thorough assessment of the disease status in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). We report the results of the cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the parent and patient versions of the JAMAR in the Arabic language. The reading comprehension of the questionnaire was tested in 10 JIA parents and patients. Each participating centre was asked to collect demographic and clinical data and the JAMAR in 100 consecutive JIA patients or all consecutive

Epidemiology of common resistant bacterial pathogens in the countries of the Arab League.

No uniformly organised collection of data regarding antimicrobial resistance has occurred in the countries of the Arab League. 19 countries of the Arab League have published data for antimicrobial susceptibility for the WHO priority organisms, and seven of 14 of these organisms are included in this Review (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Salmonella spp, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae). Although E coli and Klebsiella spp resistance to third-generation cephalosporins is common in all countries, with prevalence reaching more

Validity of test stimuli for nasalance measurement in speakers of Jordanian Arabic.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to establish the validity of passages for measuring nasalance of Jordanian speakers of Arabic. DESIGN: Two Arabic text passages were constructed; the Spring Passage is devoid of nasal consonants and the Home Passage contains both oral and nasal consonants. Nasalance was measured for participants while reciting each passage three times. Perceptual ratings of hypernasality were also obtained for each participant on each passage using a 5-point equal-appearing rating scale. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-seven children and adults ranging in age between 9 and 26 ye

Validation of an Arabic version of the global Pelvic Floor Bother Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: To validate an Arabic version of the global Pelvic Floor Bother Questionnaire (PFBQ), a self-administered 9-item symptom assessment tool. METHODS: The translation-back translation method was used to create an Arabic version of the PFBQ. Clarity of terms and face validity were ensured by modifying the translated version according to comments from a focus group. The Arabic PFBQ was completed by 130 Lebanese women, who were allocated to affected (n=65) or control (n=65) groups on the basis of 2 verbally administered screening questions. Validity was assessed by comparing the PFBQ scor

Health services to groups with special needs in the Arab world: a review.

This paper examines the health services provided to the older population (especially those with physical limitations) and the people with mental illnesses in Arab countries and their evolution over the past 3 decades. The paper reviews utilization issues related to morbidity, transportation, patient-provider relationship, cost, stigma and organizational barriers that often impede access and compliance with the care provided or recommended. Health systems in the region need to acknowledge the specific needs of these patients in their national programmes. Raising awareness is an important step i

Determination of para-phenylenediamine (PPD) in henna in the United Arab Emirates.

Henna is very popular in the United Arab Emirates (UAE); it is part of the culture and traditions. Allergy to natural henna is not usual; however the addition of para-phenylenediamine (PPD) to the natural henna increases the risk of allergic contact dermatitis. The objectives of the study were to identify the presence and concentration of PPD in henna available in UAE. Fifteen henna salons were selected randomly from three cities in UAE. Twenty five henna samples were acquired from these selected salons. The presence of PPD in henna samples was determined qualitatively and quantitatively using

Health issues in the Arab American community. A review: depression and smoking.

The association between depression and smoking has been well-documented in multiple countries and age groups. This review examines recent publications that address the magnitude of the association and its causal patterns (ie, due to lowered success of quitting in people with depression, depression causing smoking, smoking causing depression or third factor related to both smoking and depression). We conclude that the association may be multi-factorial with each of the causal directions possibly contributing to the observed association. Also, the association extends beyond depression to other m

Neuroleptic-induced tardive dyskinesia among Arab psychotic patients.

We carried out a retrospective descriptive study to determine prevalence and risk factors for tardive dyskinesia (TD) among psychotic patients treated with conventional neuroleptics in 4 centres in Saudi Arabia. Records of patients who had been taking > or = 1 conventional neuroleptic for > or = 6 months from January 1997 to December 2000 were examined; 151 patients were included in the final analysis. Dissociating arabic numeral reading and basic calculation: a case study.

This study is about JS, a patient who suffered from anomia, phonological dyslexia and severe writing problems following a left hemispheric stroke. He showed good arabic numeral comprehension as evidenced in number-comparison tasks, but impairment in transcoding arabic numerals into verbal numbers and verbal numbers into arabic numerals. Although JS had several operand reading errors, the four arithmetic operations were not affected. In calculations with arabic numerals, he produced the correct results both in oral and written responses. For instance, when presented with the multiplication "7 x

Relations of the Arabic Type A behavior scale with measures of optimism and pessimism.

This study investigated the relation of Type A behavior dimensions and measures of optimism and pessimism. The sample of 322 undergraduate students were 80 men and 242 women at Kuwait University. Analysis showed that five dimensions of Type A behavior, accuracy and persistence, speed and time pressure, desire for promotion, seriousness and organization, and workaholism were positively correlated with optimism, while aggression was negatively correlated with optimism and positively correlated with pessimism. The multiple regression analysis indicated that speed and time pressure and desire for

Beard dermatitis due to para-phenylenediamine use in Arabic men.

The most common active ingredient in hair coloring is para-phenylenediamine (PPDA), which can produce contact dermatitis, particularly in persons who dye their scalp hair and in hairdressers. We have identified another group of patients also at risk, namely men from Arab countries, who commonly grow beards and dye them. We searched the computerized patient database at the Mayo Clinic for patients with beard dermatitis associated with dye use. Eight Arabic men presented to the Mayo Clinic between 1994 and 1999 with beard dermatitis and a positive patch test to PPDA. The lesions were described a
