Examination of the association between exposure to childhood maltreatment and brain structure in young adults: a machine learning analysis.

Exposure to maltreatment during childhood is associated with structural changes throughout the brain. However, the structural differences that are most strongly associated with maltreatment remain unclear given the limited number of whole-brain studies. The present study used machine learning to identify if and how brain structure distinguished young adults with and without a history of maltreatment. Young adults (ages 18-21, n = 384) completed an assessment of childhood trauma exposure and a structural MRI as part of the IMAGEN study. Elastic net regularized regression was used to identify th

Chances and challenges of machine learning-based disease classification in genetic association studies illustrated on age-related macular degeneration.

Imaging technology and machine learning algorithms for disease classification set the stage for high-throughput phenotyping and promising new avenues for genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Despite emerging algorithms, there has been no successful application in GWAS so far. We establish machine learning-based phenotyping in genetic association analysis as misclassification problem. To evaluate chances and challenges, we performed a GWAS based on automatically classified age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in UK Biobank (images from 135,500 eyes; 68,400 persons). We quantified misclassi

Association of Brain Reward Learning Response With Harm Avoidance, Weight Gain, and Hypothalamic Effective Connectivity in Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa.

IMPORTANCE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with adolescent onset, severe low body weight, and high mortality as well as high harm avoidance. The brain reward system could have an important role in the perplexing drive for thinness and food avoidance in AN. OBJECTIVE: To test whether brain reward learning response to taste in adolescent AN is altered and associated with treatment response, striatal-hypothalamic connectivity, and elevated harm avoidance. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional multimodal brain imaging study, adolescents and young adults with AN were mat

ERP correlates of associative priming and subsequent memory effects: Evidence from sentence-embedded paired-associate learning.

The aim of this study was to examine the fine-grained interplay of episodic and associative-semantic long-term knowledge in a sentence-embedded paired-associate paradigm and to probe separable contributions to encoding-related event-related potential (ERP) amplitudes. Participants were instructed to learn sentences of the structure: article, subject-prime, auxiliary verb, closed-class word, and target-object (e.g., "the car has an engine"). Later, they had to recall the target-object, given the preceding sentence context. Words were displayed using rapid serial visual presentation. Corpus-base

Machine Learning Identifies Community-Level Factors Associated with Lung Cancer Incidence.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Individual-level risk factors such as tobacco use are well characterized, but the community-level environmental, social, and economic contributions to geographic variation in incidence remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We conducted an ecological analysis of 542 Medical Service Study Areas (MSSAs) in California, linking age-adjusted lung cancer incidence rates (AAIR, 2015-2019) to 27 indicators of pollution, population characteristics, and adult smoking prevalence. Machine learning and SHapley Add

A deep joint-learning proteomics model for diagnosis of six conditions associated with dementia.

Co-pathology is a common feature of neurodegenerative diseases that complicates diagnosis, treatment and clinical management. However, sensitive, specific and scalable biomarkers for in vivo pathological diagnosis are not available for most neurodegenerative neuropathologies. Here we present Proteomics-based Artificial Intelligence for Dementia Diagnosis (ProtAIDe-Dx), a deep joint-learning model on 17,187 patients and controls (age of 70.3 ± 11.5 years, 53.2% female), that uses plasma proteomics to provide simultaneous probabilistic diagnosis across 6 conditions associated with dementia in ag

The circuitry regulation of associative learning: dissociated and integrated function of the perirhinal cortex and hippocampus.

The formation of associations, which involves binding disparate pieces of information, is fundamental to constructing episodic memory. This process primarily relies on the neural circuitry within the medial temporal lobe, specifically the hippocampal-parahippocampal network. Within this network, the perirhinal cortex (PER) and the hippocampus (HPC) are recognized as essential components for associative processing. While the traditional dual-pathway model depicts a hierarchically organized, sequential transmission of information along the medial temporal lobe, recent anatomical and functional s

Lipid abnormalities in chronic viral hepatitis: associations and machine learning-enhanced prediction.

BACKGROUND: Alteration in serum lipids is a well-recognized metabolic accompaniment of chronic hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) viral infections, and may reflect a combination of disease severity and metabolic dysregulation. Despite this established association, lipid profile monitoring is not standard practice in these patients, and lipid abnormalities may remain unrecognized until they influence long-term cardiometabolic outcomes or complicate overall risk stratification. This gap in routine practice provided the rationale for the present study. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate whet

Predicting metabolite-disease associations based on dynamic adaptive feature learning architecture.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In recent years, the association between metabolites and complex human diseases has increasingly been recognized as a major research focus. Traditional wet-lab experiments are considered time-consuming and labor-intensive, while computational methods have been shown to significantly enhance research efficiency. However, existing methods for predicting metabolite-disease associations primarily depend on predefined similarity metrics and static network structures, often failing to capture the complex interactions among node neighborhoods within metabolite and disease ne

Sustained visual signals in the primate cerebellar dentate nucleus drive associative learning.

A number of studies have suggested that the cerebellum has cognitive functions; however, the underlying neuronal mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that sustained visual signals in the cerebellar dentate nucleus represent the visuomotor associative information. We recorded neuronal activity from the dentate nucleus when monkeys performed a learning task involving the association between visual objects and saccade directions. We found that sustained visual activity was greater during learning than during memory retrieval. This enhancement disappeared under the uncertain r

Associations Between Thyroid Function and Periodontitis: A Machine Learning Approach Using NHANES.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid dysfunction alters bone metabolism and is associated with osteoporosis. Since periodontitis involves alveolar bone loss, and thyroid disorders may impair immune regulation as well as bone remodeling, we hypothesized that thyroid hormone (TH) levels could predict the risk and severity of periodontitis. However, this potential association remains understudied to date. METHODS: This study utilized cross-sectional data from the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles, comprising 2352 eligible participants: 704 without periodon

Identification of Risk Factors Associated with Tuberculosis in Southwest Iran: A Machine Learning Method.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a principal public health issue. Reducing and controlling tuberculosis did not result in the expected success despite implementing effective preventive and therapeutic programs, one of the reasons for which is the delay in definitive diagnosis. Therefore, creating a diagnostic aid system for tuberculosis screening can help in the early diagnosis of this disease. This research aims to use machine learning techniques to identify economic, social, and environmental factors affecting tuberculosis. METHODS: This case-control study included 80 individuals with TB and 172

Human Variation in Error-Based and Reinforcement Motor Learning Is Associated With Entorhinal Volume.

Error-based and reward-based processes are critical for motor learning and are thought to be mediated via distinct neural pathways. However, recent behavioral work in humans suggests that both learning processes can be bolstered by the use of cognitive strategies, which may mediate individual differences in motor learning ability. It has been speculated that medial temporal lobe regions, which have been shown to support motor sequence learning, also support the use of cognitive strategies in error-based and reinforcement motor learning. However, direct evidence in support of this idea remains

MeCP2 deficiency impairs motor cortical circuit flexibility associated with motor learning.

Loss of function mutations in the X-linked gene encoding methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2) cause Rett syndrome (RTT), a postnatal neurological disorder. The loss of motor function is an important clinical feature of RTT that manifests early during the course of the disease. RTT mouse models with mutations in the murine orthologous Mecp2 gene replicate many human phenotypes, including progressive motor impairments. However, relatively little is known about the changes in circuit function during the progression of motor deficit in this model. As the motor cortex is the key node in the motor s
