The cognitive neuropsychology of auditory hallucinations: a parallel auditory pathways framework.

Auditory hallucinations are generally defined as false perceptions. Recent developments in auditory neuroscience have rapidly increased our understanding of normal auditory perception revealing (partially) separate pathways for the identification ("what") and localization ("where") of auditory objects. The current review offers a reexamination of the nature of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia using this object-based framework. First, the structural and functional organization of auditory what and where pathways is briefly described. Then, using recent functional neuroimaging data from

Magical ideation and hyperacusis.

The subjective experience conferred by auditory perception has rarely been addressed outside of the studies of auditory hallucinations. The aim of this study is to describe the phenomenology of auditory experiences in individuals who endorse magical beliefs, but do not report hallucinations. We examined the relationship between subjective auditory sensitivity and a 'psychotic-like' thinking style. Hyperacusis questionnaire scores were compared between 25 high scoring participants on Chapman's magical ideation (MI) scale, 25 high scoring participants on Chapman's physical anhedonia scale and 25

Contributions of non-primary cortical sources to auditory temporal processing.

Temporal processing is essential for speech perception and directional hearing. However, the number and locations of cortical sources involved in auditory temporal processing are still a matter of debate. Using source reconstruction of human EEG responses, we show that, in addition to primary sources in the auditory cortices, sources outside the auditory cortex, designated as non-primary sources, are involved in auditory temporal processing. Non-primary sources within the left and right motor areas, the superior parietal lobe and the right occipital lobe were activated by amplitude-modulated s

Auditory temporal processing skills in musicians with dyslexia.

The core cognitive difficulty in developmental dyslexia involves phonological processing, but adults and children with dyslexia also have sensory impairments. Impairments in basic auditory processing show particular links with phonological impairments, and recent studies with dyslexic children across languages reveal a relationship between auditory temporal processing and sensitivity to rhythmic timing and speech rhythm. As rhythm is explicit in music, musical training might have a beneficial effect on the auditory perception of acoustic cues to rhythm in dyslexia. Here we took advantage of th

Enhanced pitch perception in early blind individuals and musicians is due to reduced internal noise.

Although it is commonly assumed that early blind individuals have enhanced pitch perception, the literature to date has been contradictory. We measured performance on two tasks known to recruit early versus late stages of auditory frequency tuning in early blind and sighted human adults of both sexes with matched years of musical training. The two groups showed equivalent performance on a tone detection in notched-noise task that assesses cochlear frequency selectivity. In contrast, early blind individuals showed enhanced performance in a pitch discrimination task thought to be mediated by cor

Modality-specific frequency band activity during neural entrainment to auditory and visual rhythms.

Rhythm perception depends on the ability to predict the onset of rhythmic events. Previous studies indicate beta band modulation is involved in predicting the onset of auditory rhythmic events (Fujioka et al., 2009, 2012; Snyder & Large, 2005). We sought to determine if similar processes are recruited for prediction of visual rhythms by investigating whether beta band activity plays a role in a modality-dependent manner for rhythm perception. We looked at electroencephalography time-frequency neural correlates of prediction using an omission paradigm with auditory and visual rhythms. By using

Auditory temporal processing in children with specific reading disability with and without attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The auditory temporal deficit hypothesis predicts that children with specific reading disability (RD) will exhibit a deficit in the perception of auditory temporal cues in nonspeech stimuli. Tasks assessing perception of auditory temporal and nontemporal cues were administered to children with (a) RD without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (RD/no-ADHD, n = 40), (b) ADHD alone (ADHD/no-RD, n = 33), (c) RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD, n = 36), and (d) no impairment (NI, n = 41). The presence of RD was associated with a specific deficit in detection of a tone onset time asynchrony, but no reductio

Functional dissociations following bilateral lesions of auditory cortex.

We present two patients with bilateral lesions of the superior temporal cortex who manifested a number of functional dissociations in the auditory domain. The perception of speech and environmental sounds were preserved; yet, the perception of tunes, prosody and voice was impaired. As the processing of melodic but not rhythmic variations in musical sequences was selectively disturbed, the deficit cannot be attributed to a general impairment in auditory memory or sequential processing. These findings suggest that melody processing is not mediated by a general-purpose auditory architecture but b

Longitudinal Evaluation of Auditory and Speech Performance in Pediatric Cochlear Implant Recipients Using IT-MAIS, MESP, CAP, and SIR Scales.

Considerable variability in auditory and speech outcomes among pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients has raised ongoing debate regarding whether early auditory perception directly determines later speech intelligibility, particularly in tonal language environments where pitch cues are critical for communication. This longitudinal study evaluated 64 prelingually deaf children aged 1-5 years over 12 months following unilateral implantation, integrating four standardized behavioral scales-the Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS), Categories of Auditory Performance (

Auditory motion processing after early blindness.

Studies showing that occipital cortex responds to auditory and tactile stimuli after early blindness are often interpreted as demonstrating that early blind subjects "see" auditory and tactile stimuli. However, it is not clear whether these occipital responses directly mediate the perception of auditory/tactile stimuli, or simply modulate or augment responses within other sensory areas. We used fMRI pattern classification to categorize the perceived direction of motion for both coherent and ambiguous auditory motion stimuli. In sighted individuals, perceived motion direction was accurately cat

Music, rhythm, rise time perception and developmental dyslexia: perception of musical meter predicts reading and phonology.

INTRODUCTION: Rhythm organises musical events into patterns and forms, and rhythm perception in music is usually studied by using metrical tasks. Metrical structure also plays an organisational function in the phonology of language, via speech prosody, and there is evidence for rhythmic perceptual difficulties in developmental dyslexia. Here we investigate the hypothesis that the accurate perception of musical metrical structure is related to basic auditory perception of rise time, and also to phonological and literacy development in children. METHODS: A battery of behavioural tasks was devis

How does optical blur affect audiovisual speech perception and emotion perception?

This study investigated how optical blur affects the auditory-based perception of speech and emotion within a unified experimental paradigm. It is widely known that auditory judgments of speech and emotion are strongly influenced by visual information (e.g., the speaker's lip movements or facial expressions). However, it remains unclear to what extent such visual influence is modulated similarly across speech and emotion perception under visual degradation. We investigated this issue by using optical blur to degrade audiovisual stimuli, requiring participants to judge speech and emotion based

Deficient Audiovisual Speech Perception in Schizophrenia: An ERP Study.

In everyday verbal communication, auditory speech perception is often disturbed by background noise. Especially in disadvantageous hearing conditions, additional visual articulatory information (e.g., lip movement) can positively contribute to speech comprehension. Patients with schizophrenia (SZs) demonstrate an aberrant ability to integrate visual and auditory sensory input during speech perception. Current findings about underlying neural mechanisms of this deficit are inconsistent. Particularly and despite the importance of early sensory processing in speech perception, very few studies ha

Preserved Gray Matter Volume in the Left Superior Temporal Gyrus Underpins Speech-in-Noise Processing in Middle-Aged Adults.

BACKGROUND: Neuroanatomical evidence suggests that behavioral speech-in-noise (SiN) perception and the underlying cortical structural network are altered by aging, and these aging-induced changes could be initiated during middle age. However, the mechanism behind the relationship between auditory performance and neural substrates of speech perception in middle-aged individuals remains unclear. In this study, we measured the structural volumes of selected neuroanatomical regions involved in speech and hearing processing to establish their association with speech perception ability in middle-age

Short-term plasticity of neuro-auditory processing induced by musical active listening training.

Although there is strong evidence for the positive effects of musical training on auditory perception, processing, and training-induced neuroplasticity, there is still little knowledge on the auditory and neurophysiological short-term plasticity through listening training. In a sample of 37 adolescents (20 musicians and 17 nonmusicians) that was compared to a control group matched for age, gender, and musical experience, we conducted a 2-week active listening training (AULOS: Active IndividUalized Listening OptimizationS). Using magnetoencephalography and psychoacoustic tests, the short-term p

Both biological significance of acoustic signals and functional specificity of brain regions shape auditory brain network in music frogs.

The architecture and dynamics of brain networks represent the structural and functional organizational principles underlying all cognitive processes and behavioral outputs, including auditory perception. However, the functional brain network and its relationship to auditory perception in non-human vocalizing animals remain inadequately characterized. To investigate these aspects, we recorded multi-channel electrocorticogram (ECoG) from Emei music frogs (Nidirana daunchina) responding to distinct acoustic stimuli and constructed functional brain networks. In general, graph theoretical analysis

Predicting Future Reading Problems Based on Pre-reading Auditory Measures: A Longitudinal Study of Children with a Familial Risk of Dyslexia.

Purpose: This longitudinal study examines measures of temporal auditory processing in pre-reading children with a family risk of dyslexia. Specifically, it attempts to ascertain whether pre-reading auditory processing, speech perception, and phonological awareness (PA) reliably predict later literacy achievement. Additionally, this study retrospectively examines the presence of pre-reading auditory processing, speech perception, and PA impairments in children later found to be literacy impaired. Method: Forty-four pre-reading children with and without a family risk of dyslexia were assessed at

Theoretical Tinnitus Framework: A Neurofunctional Model.

Subjective tinnitus is the conscious (attended) awareness perception of sound in the absence of an external source and can be classified as an auditory phantom perception. Earlier literature establishes three distinct states of conscious perception as unattended, attended, and attended awareness conscious perception. The current tinnitus development models depend on the role of external events congruently paired with the causal physical events that precipitate the phantom perception. We propose a novel Neurofunctional Tinnitus Model to indicate that the conscious (attended) awareness perceptio

Abnormal connectivity and activation during audiovisual speech perception in schizophrenia.

The unconscious integration of vocal and facial cues during speech perception facilitates face-to-face communication. Recent studies have provided substantial behavioural evidence concerning impairments in audiovisual (AV) speech perception in schizophrenia. However, the specific neurophysiological mechanism underlying these deficits remains unknown. Here, we investigated activities and connectivities centered on the auditory cortex during AV speech perception in schizophrenia. Using magnetoencephalography, we recorded and analysed event-related fields in response to auditory (A: voice), visua
