Tone Deafness in Music Does Not Preclude Distributional Learning of Nonnative Tonal Languages in Individuals With Congenital Amusia.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that individuals with congenital amusia exhibit deficient pitch processing across music and language domains. This study investigated whether adult Chinese-speaking listeners with amusia were still able to learn Thai lexical tones based on stimulus frequency of statistical distribution via distributional learning, despite their degraded lexical tone perception. METHOD: Following a pretest-training-posttest design, 21 amusics and 23 typical, musically intact listeners were assigned into bimodal and unimodal distribution conditions. Listeners were asked to d

[Cognitive rehabilitation of amusia].

INTRODUCTION: The cognitive model of music processing has a modular architecture with two main pathways (a melody pathway and a time pathway) for processing the musical "message" and thus enabling music recognition. It also features a music-specific module for tonal encoding of pitch which stands apart from all other known cognitive systems (including language processing). To the best of our knowledge, rehabilitation therapy for amusia has not yet been reported. OBJECTIVE: We developed a therapeutic method (inspired by work on word deafness) in order to determine whether specific rehabilitati

Effects of in-the-ear microphone directionality on sound direction identification.

As advanced signal processing algorithms have been proposed to enhance hearing protective device (HPD) performance, it is important to determine how directional microphones might affect the localization ability of users and whether they might cause safety hazards. The effect of in-the-ear microphone directivity was assessed by measuring sound source identification of speech in the horizontal plane. Recordings of speech in quiet and in noise were made with Knowles Electronic Manikin for Acoustic Research wearing bilateral in-the-ear hearing aids with microphones having adjustable directivity (o

Speech perception deficit in dyslexic adults as measured by mismatch negativity (MMN).

Deficits in phonological processing are known to play a major role in the aetiology of dyslexia, and speech perception is a prerequisite condition for phonological processing. Significant group differences between dyslexics and controls have been found in the categorical perception of synthetic speech stimuli. In a previous work, we have demonstrated that these group differences are already present at an early pre-attentive stage of signal processing in dyslexic children: the late component of the MMN elicited by passive speech perception was attenuated in comparison to a control group. In thi

Musical instrument naming impairments: the crucial exception to the living/nonliving dichotomy in category-specific agnosia.

In category-specific agnosia (CSA) patients typically have more trouble naming animals, fruits, and vegetables than tools, furniture, and articles of clothing. A crucial exception to this living vs nonliving rule involves the category of musical instruments. Patients with problems naming living objects often repeatedly fail to name musical instruments. In CSA it is crucial to equate living and nonliving object lists on object name frequency, complexity, and familiarity. The present study shows, however, that even the most rigorously controlled object lists can lead to erroneous conclusions if

Perception of dynamic acoustic patterns by an individual with unilateral verbal auditory agnosia.

Previous studies have found that subjects diagnosed with verbal auditory agnosia (VAA) from bilateral brain lesions may experience difficulties at the prephonemic level of acoustic processing. In this case study, we administered a series of speech and nonspeech discrimination tests to an individual with unilateral VAA as a result of left-temporal-lobe damage. The results indicated that the subject's ability to perceive steady-state acoustic stimuli was relatively intact but his ability to perceive dynamic stimuli was drastically reduced. We conclude that this particular aspect of acoustic proc

The Duphar Lecture: on the etiology of alien, nonself attributes of schizophrenic 'voices'.

The etiology of schizophrenic hallucinations of 'voices' remains unknown. The following is a discussion of a hypothesis linking these hallucinatory phenomena to a disruption in discourse planning. The relationship between normal imagery and hallucination is discussed. The concept of 'alien intentionality' is introduced, and a theoretical argument is presented which links this phenomenon with the exteriorization of internal images. Statistical data linking discourse planning disruptions and schizophrenic data are reviewed, and a description of the treatment of a hallucinating schizophrenic via

The frequency selectivity of the 500 HZ frequency following response.

In order to evaluate the frequency selectivity of the 500 Hz FFR we applied narrow-band masking at closely spaced center frequencies in the range 0.25 to 4 kHZ. The results show clearly that it is the apical part of the cochlea that generates the 500 Hz FFR, but the area of the basilar membrane that contributes is rather broad. It was evident that some of the masking effect that was observed in the Vertex-derived response stemmed from as yet obsure brain stem mechanisms. Examination of 3 patients with selected types of hearing impairment confirmed the masking results. When there is a low frequ

Auditory processing disorder evaluations and cognitive profiles of children with specific learning disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the auditory sensory-perceptual level of specific learning disorder (SLD) and explored relationships among neuropsychological assessments for SLD, auditory processing, and short and long latencies of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs). METHODS: Fifteen children (7-14 years old) comprised the control group; 34 children comprised the SLD group. Audiologic assessments included tone audiometry, acoustic immittance measurements, acoustic reflex, central auditory processing, brainstem evoked response audiometry, and long latency potentials (P3 and N2). Blast Exposure Impairs Sensory Gating: Evidence from Measures of Acoustic Startle and Auditory Event-Related Potentials.

Many military service members and veterans who have been exposed to high-intensity blast waves experience traumatic brain injury (TBI), resulting in chronic auditory deficits despite normal hearing sensitivity. The current study sought to examine the neurological cause of this chronic dysfunction by testing the hypothesis that blast exposure leads to impaired filtering of sensory information at brainstem and early cortical levels. Groups of blast-exposed and non-blast-exposed participants completed self-report measures of auditory and neurobehavioral status, auditory perceptual tasks involving

Auditory processing disorders: can they be treated?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In recent years, parents and schools have spent millions of pounds and dollars on commercial programs that claim to treat children's developmental disorders by training their auditory processing. Here I test the truth of this claim using evidence from recent auditory training studies done with children with developmental disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Six studies were published in 2007 and 2008 that trained children with developmental disorders on an auditory training program that included nonspeech sounds or simple speech sounds. The results suggest that nonspeech training an

The contribution of AERPs (MMN and LDN) to studying temporal vs. linguistic processing deficits in children with reading difficulties.

One of the factors responsible for the appearance of reading problems seems to be a difficulty in discriminating auditory stimuli presented in rapid succession, known as the 'temporal processing hypothesis'. In this study automatic discrimination processes were evaluated in 31 children with reading difficulties and 24 control children between 4 and 8 years of age, using a passive oddball paradigm, in which syllables (/ba/ and /da/) and complex tones were presented. Analysis of the MMN component revealed significant differences between the groups only in the task involving linguistic stimuli, d

Same or Different: The Overlap Between Children With Auditory Processing Disorders and Children With Other Developmental Disorders: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Children diagnosed with auditory processing disorders (APD) experience difficulties in auditory functioning and with memory, attention, language, and reading tasks. However, it is not clear whether the behavioral characteristics of these children are distinctive from the behavioral characteristics of children diagnosed with a different developmental disorder, such as specific language impairment (SLI), dyslexia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disorder (LD), or autism spectrum disorder. This study describes the performance of children diagnosed with APD, S

Screening for auditory processing performance in primary school children.

BACKGROUND: A deficit in the processing of auditory information may underlie problems in understanding speech in the presence of background noise, degraded speech, and in following spoken instructions. Children with auditory processing disorders are challenged in the classroom because of ambient noise levels and maybe at risk for learning disabilities. PURPOSE: 1) Set up and execute screening protocol for auditory processing performance (APP) in primary school children. 2) Construct database for APP in the classroom. 3) Set critical limits for deviant performance. Our hypothesis is that scree

Sound stimulus qualities and severe auditory neglect.

We report the case of a patient who developed severe left auditory neglect following a cerebral vascular accident with infarction of areas in the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes of the right hemisphere. The severity of neglect was documented using pure tones, speech, and environmental stimuli, administered binaurally and dichotically. Acuity examination and unilateral presentation of stimuli allowed exclusion of primary hearing deficit. A dichotic word test was used to evaluate the effects of implicit and explicit cuing. Contrary to our expectations, implicit semantic cues did not attenu

Establishing validity of the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V).

PURPOSE: The Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) was developed to provide a protocol and form for clinicians to use when assessing the voice quality of adults with voice disorders (Kempster, Gerratt, Verdolini Abbott, Barkmeier-Kramer, & Hillman, 2009). This study examined the reliability and the empirical validity of the CAPE-V when used by experienced voice clinicians judging normal and disordered voices. METHOD: The validity of the CAPE-V was examined in 2 ways. First, we compared judgments made by 21 raters of 22 normal and 37 disordered voices using the CAPE-V and

Functional neuroimaging in hearing research and audiology.

The various methods of medical imaging are essential for many diagnostic issues in clinical routine, e.g., for the diagnostics and localisation of tumorous diseases, or for the clarification of other lesions in the central nervous system. In addition to these classical roles both positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allow for the investigation of functional processes in the human brain, when used in a specific way. The last 25 years have seen great progress, especially with respect to functional MRI, in terms of the available experimental paradigms as well as
