The contribution of central auditory factors to auditory disability.

Auditory disability increases with both hearing threshold level and age. It is often suggested that some or most of the age effect in auditory disability is underpinned by deficits in central auditory function. A sample of 240 individuals aged between 50 and 75 years was examined to provide a balance across the major variables of hearing level and age. The central auditory indices investigated were: the binaural masking difference, the effects of dichotic competition on the staggered spondaic word tests, the binaural advantage for dichotically presented words, the binaural advantage for dichot

Inner-hair-cell induced hearing loss: A biophysical modeling perspective.

In recent years, experimental studies have demonstrated that malfunction of the inner-hair cells and their synapse to the auditory nerve is a significant hearing loss (HL) contributor. This study presents a detailed biophysical model of the inner-hair cells embedded in an end-to-end computational model of the auditory pathway with an acoustic signal as an input and prediction of human audiometric thresholds as an output. The contribution of the outer hair cells is included in the mechanical model of the cochlea. Different types of HL were simulated by changing mechanical and biochemical parame

The effects of noise-induced hair cell lesions on cochlear electromechanical responses: A computational approach using a biophysical model.

A biophysically inspired signal processing model of the human cochlea is deployed to simulate the effects of specific noise-induced inner hair cell (IHC) and outer hair cell (OHC) lesions on hearing thresholds, cochlear compression, and the spectral and temporal features of the auditory nerve (AN) coding. The model predictions were evaluated by comparison with corresponding data from animal studies as well as human clinical observations. The hearing thresholds were simulated for specific OHC and IHC damages and the cochlear nonlinearity was assessed at 0.5 and 4 kHz. The tuning curves were est

Assessing auditory evoked potentials of wild harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Testing the hearing abilities of marine mammals under water is a challenging task. Sample sizes are usually low, thus limiting the ability to generalize findings of susceptibility towards noise influences. A method to measure harbor porpoise hearing thresholds in situ in outdoor conditions using auditory steady state responses of the brainstem was developed and tested. The method was used on 15 live-stranded animals from the North Sea during rehabilitation, shortly before release into the wild, and on 12 wild animals incidentally caught in pound nets in Denmark (inner Danish waters). Results i

The effect of impulse intensity and the number of impulses on hearing and cochlear pathology in the chinchilla.

Forty-one chinchillas, divided into seven groups, were exposed to 1, 10, or 100 noise impulses (one every 3s) having peak intensities of 131, 135, 139, or 147 dB. Hearing thresholds were measured in each animal before and after exposure using an avoidance conditioning procedure; a surface preparation of the cochlear sensory epithelia was performed approximately 90 days after exposure. There was generally an orderly relation between the amount of permanent threshold shift and the severity of exposure, and a general agreement between averaged histological data and the audiometric data. Long-term evolution of brainstem electrical evoked responses to sound after restricted ablation of the auditory cortex.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the top-down control of sound processing in the auditory brainstem of rats. Short latency evoked responses were analyzed after unilateral or bilateral ablation of auditory cortex. This experimental paradigm was also used towards analyzing the long-term evolution of post-lesion plasticity in the auditory system and its ability to self-repair. METHOD: Auditory cortex lesions were performed in rats by stereotactically guided fine-needle aspiration of the cerebrocortical surface. Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) were recorded at post-surgery day (PSD) 1,

Cochlear synaptopathy impairs suprathreshold tone-in-noise coding in the cochlear nucleus.

Hearing impairment without threshold elevations can occur when there is damage to high-threshold auditory nerve fibre synapses with cochlear inner hair cells. Instead, cochlear synaptopathy produces suprathreshold deficits, especially in older patients, which affect conversational speech. Given that listening in noise at suprathreshold levels presents significant challenges to the ageing population, we examined the effects of synaptopathy on tone-in-noise coding on the central recipients of auditory nerve fibres, i.e. the cochlear nucleus neurons. To induce synaptopathy, guinea pigs received a

Hyperacusis in chronic pain: neural interactions between the auditory and nociceptive systems.

OBJECTIVE: Sensory disturbances are common in chronic pain patients. Hyperacusis can be an especially debilitating experience. Here, we review published work on how the auditory and nociceptive systems might interact in chronic pain syndromes to produce pain-hyperacusis. DESIGN: Literature review. STUDY SAMPLE: The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched for relevant articles published between 2000 and 2017 using the primary search terms "hyperacusis"/"hyperacousis" and "pain". Ten papers were found using this strategy. Supplementary sources were identified by browsing textbooks and the re

Large group differences in binaural sensitivity are represented in preattentive responses from auditory cortex.

Correlated sounds presented to two ears are perceived as compact and centrally lateralized, whereas decorrelation between ears leads to intracranial image widening. Though most listeners have fine resolution for perceptual changes in interaural correlation (IAC), some investigators have reported large variability in IAC thresholds, and some normal-hearing listeners even exhibit seemingly debilitating IAC thresholds. It is unknown whether or not this variability across individuals and outlier manifestations are a product of task difficulty, poor training, or a neural deficit in the binaural aud

Controlling audibility with noise for online experiments using sound.

Online auditory experiments use the sound delivery equipment of each participant, with no practical way to calibrate sound level or frequency response. Here, a method is proposed to control sensation level across frequencies: embedding stimuli in threshold-equalizing noise. In a cohort of 100 online participants, noise could equate detection thresholds from 125 to 4000 Hz. Equalization was successful even for participants with atypical thresholds in quiet, due either to poor quality equipment or unreported hearing loss. Moreover, audibility in quiet was highly variable, as overall level was un

Experimental endolymphatic hydrops: are cochlear and vestibular symptoms caused by increased endolymphatic pressure?

The correlation between inner ear pressure and cochlear function was investigated in guinea pigs with unilaterally obliterated endolymphatic sacs and ducts. In 11 animals that developed endolymphatic hydrops, auditory thresholds as monitored by auditory evoked action potentials had increased with recruitment. Most of these animals also experienced episodes of spontaneous nystagmus. In control ears endolymphatic pressure did not differ more than 0.5 cm H2O from perilymphatic pressure. In six of 11 hydropic ears, endolymphatic pressure was more than 0.5 cm H2O higher than perilympathic pressure;

Evaluation of the auditory system: an update.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the audiologic techniques currently used at the Otologic Medical Group, Inc. Auditory threshold in children is determined by a combination of behavioral and objective audiometric techniques. When behavioral techniques fail, auditory brainstem response audiometry combined with impedance audiometry gives a good estimate of hearing thresholds. Impedance audiometry is a valuable addition to the diagnosis of cochlear otosclerosis. This technique is also of benefit in the neurotologic evaluation. Auditory brainstem response audiometry is the most accurate met

Multisession anodal epidural direct current stimulation of the auditory cortex delays the progression of presbycusis in the Wistar rat.

Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems facing aging populations. Along the auditory pathway, the stations involved in transmission and processing, function as a system of interconnected feedback loops. Regulating hierarchically auditory processing, auditory cortex (AC) neuromodulation can, accordingly, activate both peripheral and central plasticity after hearing loss. However, previous ARHL-prevention interventions have mainly focused on preserving the structural and functional integrity of the inner ear, overlooking the central aud

Animal models of hidden hearing loss: Does auditory-nerve-fiber loss cause real-world listening difficulties?

Afferent innervation of the cochlea by the auditory nerve declines during aging and potentially after sound overexposure, producing the common pathology known as cochlear synaptopathy. Auditory-nerve-fiber loss is difficult to detect with the clinical audiogram and has been proposed to cause 'hidden hearing loss' including impaired speech-in-noise perception. While evidence that auditory-nerve-fiber loss causes hidden hearing loss in humans is controversial, behavioral animal models hold promise to rigorously test this hypothesis because neural lesions can be induced and histologically validat

Effects of intense noise exposure on fetal sheep auditory brain stem response and inner ear histology.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, in two separate experiments, the effects of intense noise exposures delivered to fetal sheep in utero during a time of rapid auditory development. DESIGN: In the first experiment, auditory brain stem response (ABR) thresholds to clicks and tone bursts were recorded from chronically instrumented fetal sheep in utero before and after exposure of pregnant ewes to intense broadband noise. A single 16 hr exposure was delivered at 113 days gestational age, a time when the ABR is just emerging. Thresholds were compared with an age-matched, nonexposed control group. In the sec

Effect of high-frequency interrupted noise exposures on evoked-potential thresholds, distortion-product otoacoustic emissions, and outer hair cell loss.

The effect of high-frequency interrupted noise exposures on evoked potential (EP) thresholds, distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), and status of the outer hair cells was studied with the aim of understanding the correspondence among the three measures. Animal subjects were exposed to an octave band noise centered at 4 kHz at 85 dB SPL for 6 hr/day for 10 days. EP and DPOAE recordings were made before the exposure and on days 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 of exposure. A final set of measurements were made 5 days after the last exposure, following which the animals were sacrificed and thei

Trimethyltin effects on auditory function and cochlear morphology.

Trimethyltin (TMT) is a neurotoxicant known to alter auditory function. The present study was designed to compare TMT-induced auditory dysfunction using behavioral, electrophysiological, and anatomical techniques. Adult male Long-Evans hooded rats (n = 9-12/group) were acutely exposed to saline, 3, 5, or 7 mg/kg TMT. Auditory thresholds were determined 11 weeks postdosing for 5- and 40-kHz tones using reflex modification of the auditory startle response (ASR). Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) thresholds were determined for 5-, 40-, and 80-kHz tonal stimuli 9 weeks postdosing. Cochlear
