Malignant bile-duct obstruction: experience with self-expanding metal endoprostheses (Wallstents) in Austria.

Fifty-two patients in nine Austrian hospitals were treated with biliary self-expanding metal endoprostheses (Wallstents) for malignant biliary obstruction, and followed up retrospectively using questionnaires, answered by the endoscopists. Stent placement was successful in all patients. The technical failure rate at the first attempt was 7.7%, and stenting-associated mortality was 3.8% due to mispositioning of stents, leading in two cases to death. The 30-day mortality was 13.5%, and early complications occurred in 15.4%. The median survival was 216 days, and the median stent patency was 291 d

[Interventional pain treatment in Austria : Results of a survey among specialized pain therapists].

BACKGROUND: Interventional procedures are an integral component of multimodal pain management; however, their clinical use and indications remain controversial due to heterogeneous evidence regarding their efficacy. Until now, no systematic data have been available on the prevalence and clinical practice of interventional pain management techniques in Austria. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the current clinical practice of interventional pain management in specialized pain centers in Austria and to discuss these findings in the context of the available evidence. METHODS: An a

Tick-borne encephalitis: Burden of disease and impact of vaccination, Austria (2000-2024).

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) incidence has increased across Europe in the past decade, even in Austria which has the highest vaccination coverage in Europe. This study investigated the field effectiveness of TBE vaccination using nationwide hospital-based surveillance data (2000-2024), and examined age-specific differences in vaccine effectiveness and disease severity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of laboratory-confirmed TBE cases in Austria using nationwide hospital-based surveillance from 2000 to 2024. Annual TBE incidence rates were calculated for populations

Babesia spp. and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in free-ranging wild ungulates in central Austria.

Free-ranging wild ungulates are widespread in Austria, and act as hosts (i.e. feeding hosts) for ticks, including Ixodes ricinus, and as reservoir hosts for pathogens transmitted by I. ricinus. Due to climate change, the abundance of I. ricinus might be increasing, which could potentially lead to higher prevalences of tick-borne pathogens, such as Babesia spp. and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, some known for their zoonotic potential. Human babesiosis is classified as an emerging zoonosis, but sufficient data of these parasites in central Austria is lacking. In order to assess the abundance of vec

Molecular diagnosis of autochthonous human anaplasmosis in Austria - an infectious diseases case report.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of human anaplasmosis remains elusive and is probably often missed. This case report highlights the efficacy of molecular diagnostic techniques. CASE PRESENTATION: We would like to report the case of a 74-year-old man who was admitted to hospital because of a high fever, marked chills, transient diplopic images and vertigo, 6 weeks after multiple tick bites. The laboratory results showed mild anemia, marked thrombocytopenia and leukopenia and a moderately elevated C-reactive protein. The initial serology seemed to indicate an active infection with Borrelia spp., and

Cryptosporidium parvum, Cryptosporidium ryanae, and Cryptosporidium bovis in samples from calves in Austria.

Fecal samples of 177 calves of up to 180 days of age with diarrhea from 70 farms in Austria were examined to obtain information on the occurrence of Cryptosporidium species. Initially, all samples were examined by phase-contrast microscopy. Cryptosporidium-positive samples (55.4%; n = 98) were screened by gp60 PCR, resulting in 68.4% (n = 67) C. parvum-positive samples. The remaining 31 gp60-PCR-negative and the phase-contrast microscopy negative samples (n = 79) were screened by PCR targeting a 700 bp fragment of the 18S rRNA gene. Sequencing of the PCR products revealed the presence of C. pa

High prevalence of Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi) in foxes from western Austria.

Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi) is a canine trichuroid nematode affecting the upper respiratory airways (i.e., nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses) of dogs, foxes, and wolves. In the past few years, reports in dogs and wild canids have increased from across Europe, but data on its occurrence and distribution in Austria is scanty. A total of 47 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from the two westernmost provinces (Tyrol and Vorarlberg) of Austria were therefore examined for the presence of E. boehmi at necropsy. Eggs and adult nematodes were identified morphologically and molecularly (cox1) as E

Multilocus sequence analysis of Giardia spp. isolated from patients with diarrhea in Austria.

Giardia duodenalis is a protozoan parasite causing intestinal infections in a wide range of mammals. Two distinct assemblages, A and B, infect humans predominantly; however, both are believed to be generally zoonotic. Giardia strains associated with infections in Austria have not been investigated at the molecular level. In this study, 65 human stool samples microscopically positive for Giardia spp. were subjected to DNA isolation and nested PCR targeting fragments of the glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh), triose phosphate isomerase (tpi), and beta-gardin (bg) genes. A total of 52 samples were suc

Sustained low hospitalization rates after four years of rotavirus mass vaccination in Austria.

This hospital based surveillance study evaluates the effects of the rotavirus mass vaccination program, which was initiated in Austria in August 2007. Since then, incidence rates of rotavirus hospitalizations in children <15 years of age have decreased by 70% and 64% in 2010 and 2011 compared to the pre-vaccination era (2001-2005). Incidence rates were highest in children <90 days of age, highlighting the importance of the early start of active rotavirus immunization. In children between 2 and 3.5 years in 2011, who were in the second and third year after vaccination in the universal mass vacc

Echinococcus canadensis G7 (pig strain): an underestimated cause of cystic echinococcosis in Austria.

Anamnesis data of 104 patients with Cystic Echinococcosis were correlated retrospectively with the detected species/strain of Echinococcus. Ninety-two percent (N = 23) of autochthonous Austrian and 33% (N = 9) of patients with former Yugoslavian (YU) origin were infected with E. canadensis G7, the pig strain. All patients originating from Turkey harbored E. granulosus G1, the sheep strain. All E. canadensis G7-infected patients showed small liver cysts (ø 5.9 cm), only one of them an additional lung cyst. The median age at the time of operation of the Austrian patients was 55 years, of the Tur

[Adverse effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. A prevalence study in Austria].

OBJECTIVE: Gastrointestinal side effects are the limiting factor in the prescription of non-steroidal antirheumatic drugs (NSAID). However, there are no recent data from Austria. The aim of this prevalence study was therefore to assess the gastrointestinal risk from NSAID in Austria. METHODS: A total of 1347 patients were observed in an outpatient setting between March 2000 and February 2001. Side effects from NSAID were documented by questionnaire at two time points with a mean interval of 31 days. Documented data were analysed descriptively using an explorative strategy. The prevalence of s

[Early summer meningoencephalitis vaccination, a preventive medicine measure with high acceptance in Austria].

The vaccination against Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) was accepted by the Austrian population on a broad scale. Of the estimated 5 million Austrians at risk of TBE, as of 1987 only 1.7 million were unvaccinated. From the very small number of TBE cases despite vaccination we were able to calculate a protection rate of 95% after 2 vaccinations and of 99% after 3 or more vaccinations. Since 1984 as a consequence of the vaccination campaign a steady decline of TBE could be observed in Austria. More than 10 years ago improved procedures enabled the production of a highly purified vaccine, thus redu

Epidemiology and Economic Burden of Puumala Virus Infection in Styria, Austria, 2003 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Hantavirus infections cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and impose a potential burden on healthcare systems. However, comprehensive economic data remain scarce. We quantified the inpatient economic burden of hospitalized patients with Puumala virus (PUUV) infections in Styria, Austria's primary endemic region, to identify hospitalization costs and early admission predictors of costs. METHODS: This retrospective cost-of-illness study analyzed 1049 serologically confirmed PUUV hospitalizations across 20 public hospitals in Styria, Austria between September 2003 and March 2

Assessing the effects of botulinum toxin therapy for spasmodic dysphonia: An Austria-Germany registry.

OBJECTIVE: Injection of Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) is regarded as standard treatment for spasmodic dysphonia (SD), reducing the overactivity of the affected muscles. Due to the lack of standardized outcome parameters for diagnosing SD or assessing its treatment over time, the evaluation of systematic clinical evidence on the effects of BoNT therapy on SD symptom control is difficult. The registry presented in this article aimed to evaluate outcomes after BoNT treatment in SD patients in Austria and Germany, based on selected subjective and objective voice parameters. METHODS: 41 patients wit
