UNLABELLED: Stroke patients with relevant deficits are not allowed to drive. This study tended to assess driving abilities in an early stage after cerebral ischemia with a driving simulator.
METHODS: 32 patients (aged 54.9 +/- 14.8 years) with acute ischemia in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) (n = 24) and in the vertebral artery (VA) (n = 8) were investigated with reaction tests and a driving simulator. Controls were 12 healthy volunteers (aged 50.0 +/- 13.9 years).

Teenagers were surveyed by telephone every 6 months from their freshman to senior high school years (N=911). BACKGROUND: Assessing medical fitness to drive (FTD) can include both off- and on-road testing, although consistency of practice is unclear.

The current study compares hazard perception (HP) performance of 50 male drivers with and without a motorcycle license in order to generalize results. A video-based HP test, measuring reaction times to traffic scenes, was administered to these two groups of drivers. BACKGROUND: To obtain a driver's licence certain requirements for visual acuity and visual field have to be fulfilled. Mesopic contrast and glare sensitivity are not regularly tested and are not crucial to passing the driving test.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 39-year-old professional bus driver whose only complaint was increased glare sensitivity. After he had been involved in four traffic accidents, ophthalmological investigations revealed binocular annular scotomata and night blindness, leading to the diagnosis of rod-cone dystrophy.

OBJECTIVES: This article provides estimates of the percentage of seniors who are licensed to operate a motor vehicle. It describes the health characteristics of these license holders and reviews research relating to older drivers.
DATA SOURCES: The data are from the cross-sectional file of Statistics Canada's 1996/97 National Population Health Survey. The sample size of respondents aged 65 or older was 13,363, weighted to represent 3.4 million individuals. In many African countries, including Botswana, the driving schools and instruction given to pupils are uncontrolled. Thus, this paper presents the results of an investigation into the level of professional training offered by the driving schools in Gaborone. A total of 400 randomly selected drivers completed questionnaires on their training, accident records, and L-tests. Male trainee drivers received more instruction than females, and there was some indication that the pass rate on L-tests was lower for female drivers. OBJECTIVE: In 2003, New York State implemented an enhanced graduated driving licensing (GDL) program that requires extended supervised driving and a passenger restriction. This study examines its safety benefit in 55 Upstate New York counties.
METHODS: We analyzed fatal/incapacitating traffic injury data among 16-, 17- and 21-24-year olds for the years 2001 and 2005 using the negative binomial model.
