OBJECTIVE: Driving under the influence (DUI) remains a persistent threat to public safety, especially in dense urban areas where alcohol use and vehicle traffic often intersect. This study develops one of the first integrated frameworks that link DUI origins, travel patterns, crash locations, and enforcement points to inform adaptive, route-based enforcement strategies.
METHODS: Using 17,075 DUI incidents in Seoul from 2021-2022, the study combines network-based shortest-path estimation and logistic regression to model offender movement, assuming the Place of Last Drink (POLD) as the trip ori

Background/Purpose: A growing body of evidence suggests that people who are arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol are more likely to screen positive for psychiatric disorders than the general population. Additionally, psychiatric comorbidity has been shown to increase vulnerability to criminal re-offense. However, DUI programs face many barriers to screening for psychiatric disorders. This paper evaluates the sensitivity and specificity of a screening tool developed for these programs, the Computerized Assessment and Referral System (CARS) Screener. Methods: We used data fr

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol-impaired driving is a persistent global public health concern, with limited recent progress in reducing its impact on roads, highlighting the need for innovative approaches. The increasing adoption of machine learning (ML) has led to its application in detecting alcohol-induced driving impairment. This systematic review examines and synthesizes existing research that leverages ML utilizing in-vehicle sensors to detect alcohol-impaired driving, with a focus on the ML models employed and the input variables analyzed.
METHOD: Studies were included if they applied ML techniq

BACKGROUND: In addition to their convenience, ridesharing applications (apps) have the potential to offer a safer transportation alternative, especially in situations involving intoxication. Their use may lead to reductions in crash-related injuries and deaths, particularly due to alcohol-impaired driving. Several observational studies have aimed to assess the impact of ridesharing on alcohol-impaired driving, crashes, and deaths. Our goal was to systematically review the literature to inform policy makers and public health practitioners on the use of ridesharing apps in the reduction of crash

Objectives: How prevalent is drugged driving among Colorado drivers convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI)? What are the conviction rates of Colorado drivers charged with DUI, including impairment by marijuana's delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)? Is Colorado's THC permissible inference law effective? To answer these questions, this report analyzes data published primarily in appendices of Colorado drugged driving reports. Methods: In 2017 Colorado began requiring annual analyses of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) offenses, including causes and judicial consequences of DUI offenses. PURPOSE: To assess the effects of alcohol on the ability to drive an e-scooter, driving tests reflecting real-life situations accompanied by medical examinations focusing on balance were conducted at different blood alcohol concentrations (BACs).
METHODS: Fifty-seven subjects who consumed alcohol (28 female, 29 male) and 6 consistently sober subjects (3 female, 3 male) participated in the study. Alcohol was administered on a fixed schedule, and the individual drinking quantity was individually calculated in advance using the Widmark formula. Repeated runs through a fixed course were performed

Drug-impaired driving is a growing public safety issue. Addressing impairment due to drugs other than ethanol can be challenging for forensic toxicologists as many factors need to be considered including the type of drug(s), drug-drug interaction, the dose(s) and the individual's physiological condition and drug use history. Interpretation of blood drug test results is additionally difficult as drug concentrations in impaired driving cases may overlap levels typically viewed as toxic. This study compares blood concentrations of drugs in impaired driving cases to those in postmortem cases in Ho

Thirty driving phobics who called the Psychiatry Outpatient Phobia Clinic (25 females and five males) were given a 20-min semi-standardized telephone interview during which they were asked about the circumstances of the onset of their driving fears. Twelve (40%) reported that their fears were precipitated by a panic attack on the freeway; six (20%) by a collision; and three (10%) by other frightening experiences in automobiles. Four (13.3%) related the onset to family stress or upheaval. Other modes of onset also occurred. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of existing t

Alprazolam is prescribed for the treatment of anxiety and panic disorder. Most users are presumably involved in daily activities such as driving. However, the effects of alprazolam on driving ability have never been investigated. This study was conducted to determine the effects of alprazolam (1 mg) on driving ability, memory and psychomotor performance. Twenty healthy volunteers participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study. One hour after oral administration, subjects performed a standardized driving test on a primary highway during normal traffic. They were

Drivers in human-driven vehicles (HDVs) can get confused when encountering automated vehicles (AVs) driving so defensively that their behavior differs from what human drivers actually expect. The confusion may potentially provoke aggression toward AVs and jeopardize traffic safety. This study investigated whether a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication system can help mitigate HDV drivers' confusion and aggressive driving behavior toward AVs in HDV-AV interaction, considering the driving styles of both HDV drivers and AVs. Forty-eight participants, classified by driving style (defensive, mode

With the increasing adoption of driving automation technologies, vehicles equipped with SAE Level 3 driving automation are becoming available on the market. This study explores drivers' behaviour when driving conditionally automated vehicles on-road, providing multiple levels of driving automation. Sixteen participants drove a Wizard-of-Oz vehicle offering several levels of automation (Manual, SAE Level 2 and Level 3) on a public highway. Data was collected during driving sessions (observations and think-aloud) and post-driving sessions (in-depth interviews). The results indicate that drivers

The European Union (EU) law harmonization expects from each EU country to apply the same principles and same standards of the medical evaluation of driving licenses. All EU member states have to apply common evaluations of the driving licenses - based on the EU Regulation 2016/1006 - at the latest from January of this year. Hungary launched this new regulation on the 12th of January 2018. The most important source document of the current national regulation is the expert consensus document "New Standards for Driving and Cardiovascular Diseases" published in 2013. This is the professional evaul

To avoid loss of driving privileges, patients with epilepsy may elect not to report seizures to their physician or to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Reporting to the physician may differ depending upon the type of law in effect, i.e., mandatory physician reporting versus patient reporting to the DMV. Nondisclosure to the physician may have important consequences with regard to seizure management. We surveyed patients at two adult seizure clinics to determine the effect of driving laws on patients' reporting to their physician. One hundred fifty-eight patients completed an anonymous qu

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether a lower initial dose of mirtazapine can lessen the harmful effect on driving performance or not in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled crossover trial.
METHODS: Thirteen healthy men received 8 days of continuous nocturnal doses of mirtazapine at 7.5 mg or 15 mg, or placebo. At baseline and on days 2 and 9, subjects performed three driving tasks (road-tracking, car-following, and harsh-braking tasks) using a driving simulator and a Continuous Performance Test. Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS) scores were also assessed. In the mirtazapine 7.5 mg ser

Every US state requires drivers to pass a knowledge and skills examination before obtaining their driver's license. Surprisingly little is known about the progression of people through the examination process. To date, no research has been conducted on the proportion of individuals who pass from one stage of the driver examination process to the next compared to those who fail and are required to be reexamined. The purpose of this study was to follow the progression of a cohort of new drivers in Washington State as they advanced through the driver examination process. We reviewed driving recor

IMPORTANCE: There is an urgent need to develop evidence-based assessments to identify older individuals who may be unsafe drivers.
OBJECTIVE: To validate 8 off-road brief screening tests to predict on-road driving ability and to identify which combination of these provides the best prediction of older adults who will not pass an on-road driving test.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prognostic study was conducted between October 31, 2013, and May 10, 2017, using the criterion standard for screening tests, an on-road driving test, with analysis conducted from August 1, 2019, to April 2

OBJECTIVE: Certification by treating physicians of fitness to drive in people with epilepsy creates a conflict of interest that may result in unsafe decisions, damage the doctor-patient relationship, expose the physician to legal liability and prevent optimal treatment. Ideally, the treating physician should provide objective clinical information to the driver licensing authority (DLA), which then determines fitness or otherwise. However, DLAs in Australia do not employ medical staff and the national standards are complex. Fitness is determined by the treating physician, according to published

Road traffic injuries are projected to be the leading cause of death for those aged between 15 and 29 years by the year 2030, and sleepiness is estimated to be the underlying cause in up to 15-20% of all motor vehicle accidents. Sleepiness at the wheel is most often caused by socially induced sleep deprivation or poor sleep hygiene in otherwise healthy individuals, medical disorders, or the intake of drugs. Validated methods for objectifying sleepiness are urgently sought, particularly in the context of driving. Based on the assumption that the identification and treatment of sleepiness, and i

BACKGROUND: Graduated driving licensing (GDL) programs phase in driving privileges for teenagers. We aimed to evaluate the effect of the 2007 GDL law on the incidence of total motor vehicle crashes (tMVCs) and fatal motor vehicle crashes (fMVCs) among teenagers in Massachusetts.
METHODS: The Fatality Analysis and Reporting System, the Missouri Census Data Center, and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation databases were all used to create and compare the incidence of tMVCs and fMVCs before (2002-2006) and after (2007-2011) the law enactment. The following three driver age groups were
