Nonhuman primates have been shown to develop periodontitis with clinical and demographic features similar to humans. This preclinical disease model is well-positioned to advance the elucidation of novel biologic-based preventive and therapeutic approaches to controlling periodontitis, a chronic infection and immunoinflammatory disease. In this analysis, the oral microbiomes of younger (10-19 human years; n = 30) nonhuman primates are compared for matriline (an indicator of heritability), sex, and age variations. A holistic assessment of the microbiome similarities/differences suggested two pri

The impact of microplastics (MPs) on the diversity and composition of the gut microbiome has been extensively documented in animal studies, but evidence in humans remains limited. Recognizing the potential differences in MP effects between animal and human gut microbiomes, this review synthesizes current evidence concerning their impact on the human gut microbiota. Furthermore, the potential links between microplastic-induced dysbiosis and the pathogenesis of human diseases were analyzed. Cross-sectional studies have been conducted to explore microplastic exposures (such as in humans who consu

Dietary energy levels typically influence the structure and functional profile of the gastrointestinal microbial community. In this study, thirty 6-month-old Small-tailed Han (STH) sheep were randomly divided into three groups and fed corn-based diets with different energy levels for 150 days. Jejunal contents were then collected and analyzed using metagenomic sequencing to assess microbial alpha diversity and taxonomic composition. Functional annotation and enrichment analysis were performed using the KEGG database. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and alpha diversity indices (Chao1, Shan

Reassignment of stop codons is a significant evolutionary event with recoding of UGA to tryptophan being previously identified in only three bacterial phyla, the Bacillota, Pseudomonadota and Verrucomicrobiota. Here, we present genomic evidence of this reassignment in a fourth bacterial phylum, the Actinomycetota, specifically in the family Eggerthellaceae. We identify the UGA stop-to-tryptophan reassignment in 34 metagenome-assembled genomes recovered from the stool samples of diverse mammalian hosts, including equids and primates. Canonical markers for this reassignment are consistently obse

Type II NADH dehydrogenases (NDH-2) are accessory enzymes of the bacterial electron transport chain (ETC). While they functionally overlap with complex I, their main role is not proton translocation but maintaining the intracellular NADH/NAD+ balance. Although often non-essential, NDH-2 become crucial in species lacking complex I, serving as the primary electron entry point into the ETC. Their virtual absence in mammals makes these enzymes attractive targets for antimicrobial drug development and mitochondrial functional restoration. NDH-2 catalyse electron transfer from NADH to quinones, yet

Ex-situ conservation and captive breeding are important measures for protecting endangered species. However, captive conditions inhibit reproduction in some wild animals, especially males. Under captive conditions, which differentially expressed microbiota and metabolites significantly influence or are key to reproductive performance? This study aimed to investigate the effects of differentially expressed microbiota and metabolites on reproductive performance, including male Malayan pangolins with normal reproductive behavior (NR, with natural mating behavior) and those with abnormal reproduct

Compared to other sludge disintegration methods, bio-disintegration of waste activated sludge (WAS) offered the advantages of lower cost and stable operation of the subsequent digestion system. This study used rumen fluid as an external biological source for hydrolytic pretreatment and cell wall disruption of WAS, and compared its cell disruption effect with that of anaerobic sludge (AS), and explored the mechanism by which ruminal microorganisms (RM) disrupted WAS cell walls. Experimental results showed that the release concentrations of SCOD and NH+ 4 from the RM reactor were 2.2 times and 1

OBJECTIVE: The randomized PROGRESS trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03333304) proved that the early stopping of antibiotics in sepsis guided by procalcitonin changes leads, among others, to a decrease in the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea (AAD) and preservation of gut microbiome diversity. We aimed to explore the association of AAD with baseline microbiome composition.
METHODS: Patients with sepsis were followed for 28 d for AAD development. As procalcitonin guidance led to a decrease in AAD, only patients of the comparator arm (i.e. under treatment with standard-of-care duration of

This research was conducted to evaluate the safety and effects of two probiotic candidate strains, Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium) and B. fragilis (BF), which were isolated from healthy sheep, on various factors such as intestinal structure, growth performance, organ indices, and gut microbiota in female C57BL/6J mice. A total of fifty mice were categorized into five groups: BF108, BF109, EF108, EF109, and a control group. The results indicated that mice in the EF108 and BF109 groups experienced a significant increase in body weight by day 28 compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Additio

Antibiotic resistance poses a significant threat to human health, and the human gut microbiota serves as a major reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, we analyzed 149,515 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from human gut microbiomes and revealed marked geographic variations in the global distribution of gut-associated ARGs. Asia exhibits the highest diversity of ARGs. At the phylum level, Pseudomonadota was identified as the predominant ARG host among pathogenic bacteria, with its pathogenic strains frequently exhibiting high levels of multidrug resistant strains har

Poultry slaughterhouse wastewater (PSW) is a source of environmental pollutants, harboring pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study aimed to assess the effects of conventional biological treatment of PSW on the bacterial community and its efficiency in removing ARGs, as well as to evaluate the impact of its discharge on the receiving river. Samples were collected from raw sewage, treated effluent, and upstream and downstream river sites. Total metagenomic DNA was extracted for real-time PCR quantification of 16S rRNA, yccT gene (Escherichia coli), and ARGs, which were selec

BACKGROUND: We aimed to elucidate the cystic fibrosis (CF) microbiota composition (shotgun metagenomics) and functionality (short-chain fatty acids, SCFAs).
METHODS: Fecal and sputum samples were recruited from 39 clinically stable CF subjects.
RESULTS: Bacillota and Pseudomonadota were dominant in both gut and lung compartments, whereas Ascomycota were the most abundant fungi in feces, and Basidiomycota, especially Malassezia globosa, in sputum. Viruses accounted for 0.4 % of the relative abundance in the gut and 0.6 % in lungs. Mycobacteroides abscessus was genetically identified in 10 ind

Bacterial microbiota in stool may vary over a wide range, depending on age, nutrition, etc. The purpose of our work was to discriminate phyla and genera of intestinal bacteria and their biodiversity within a healthy population (North-Western Russia) compared to the patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The study group included 183 healthy persons 2 to 53 years old (a mean of 26.5±1.0 years old), and 41 T1DM patients (mean age 18.2±1.8 years old). The disease onset was at 11±1.5 years, with a T1DM experience of 7±1.5 years. Total DNA was isolated from the stool samples, and sequencing

We present a rare case of Eggerthia catenaformis causing an intratumoral lung abscess in metastatic adenocarcinoma. Despite catheter drainage and broad-spectrum antibiotics, the infection persisted, prompting salvage intracavitary antibiotic instillation with poor response. This case highlights the diagnostic advances, therapeutic attempts, and importance of oral evaluation in anaerobic pulmonary infections.

Parvimonas micra is a gram-positive anaerobic coccus typically found in the human oral cavity, upper respiratory tract and gastrointestinal system. It occasionally causes intra-abdominal abscesses, spondylodiscitis and other infections. There are very few case reports on mycotic aneurysm related to P. micra We describe a rare case of P. micra orbital cellulitis complicated with meningitis, cerebral venous thrombosis and internal carotid artery mycotic aneurysm, which was successfully treated with the combination of endovascular therapy and antibiotics. Additionally, the patient received 6 mont

BACKGROUND: Septic arthritis often occurs in young calves when the passive transfer of maternal immunoglobulins has failed, which results in hypogammaglobulinaemia in the calf. Another important cause is suboptimal herd health management which often leads to general health impairment and, subsequently, to septic arthritis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A dairy farmer consulted the Herd Health Service of the University Clinic reporting general herd health impairment, a high incidence of respiratory diseases, unsatisfactory weight gain and arthritis in calves, as well as mastitis and high milk cell counts

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder with inadequate antibody responses and low levels of immunoglobulins including IgA that is involved in the maintenance of the intestinal homeostasis. In this study, we analyzed the taxonomical and functional metagenome of the fecal microbiota and stool metabolome in a cohort of six CVID patients without gastroenterological symptomatology and their healthy housemates. The fecal microbiome of CVID patients contained higher numbers of bacterial species and altered abundance of thirty-four species. Hunga

Bacteria inhabiting the gut of insects provide many benefits to their hosts, such as aiding in food digestion, reproduction, and immunity, tissue homeostasis, adaptation to environment and resistance to pathogen and pesticides. The cowpea beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus, is a serious cosmopolitan pest of pulses. This beetle has lent itself as a guinea pig for several ecological studies. It harbors a consortium of bacterial communities in its gut, but the evidence for their role in its physiology is fragmentary. In this work, we hypothesized that gut microbiota mediates C. maculatus resistance

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mesenteric lymph nodes are sites in which translocated bacteria incite and progress immunological responses. For this reason, understanding the microbiome of mesenteric lymph nodes in inflammatory bowel disease is important. The bacterial profile of Crohn's disease mesenteric lymph nodes has been analysed using culture-independent methods in only one previous study. This study aimed to investigate the mesenteric lymph node microbiota from both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis patients.
METHODS: Mesenteric lymph nodes were collected from Crohn's disease and ulcerativ

Parvimonas micra is an anaerobic, Gram-positive coccus belonging to oral, gastrointestinal and genital flora, rarely causing infections in humans. It was mainly deemed to cause bacteremia, septic bone and cerebral infections in patients which have undergone dental procedures or with suboptimal dental hygiene. We report the first case of Parvimonas micra bacteremia following endoscopic retrograde colangiopancreatography performed due to choledocholithiasis in a patient with good oral health. Identification of P. micra was finally performed by Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of
