Type of Turnout and Injury Rates in Elite Dancers: A Critically Appraised Topic.

CLINICAL SCENARIO: Dancers commonly stand in hip external rotation due to the esthetics that ballet requires. Increased external rotation is desired which leads dancers to find ways to compensate to increase their external rotation, an action known as compensated turnout. Dancers commonly rotate at the tibiofemoral joint and/or the talocrural joint to increase external rotation of the entire lower body, placing increased stress on these joints. This critically appraised topic focuses on the relationship between types of turn out and lower-extremity injury in dancers. CLINICAL QUESTION: In eli

Acute Schmorl's Node during Strenuous Monofin Swimming: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Study Design This case report describes an acute Schmorl's node (SN) in an elite monofin athlete during exercise. The patient presented with severe back pain and leg numbness and was managed successfully with conservative treatment. Objective The aim of our communication was to describe a rare presentation of a common pathological condition during an intense sport. Background Swimming is not generally considered to be a sport activity that leads to spinal injuries. SNs are usually asymptomatic lesions, incidentally found on imaging studies. There is no correlation between swimming and symptoma

Low back pain, radiculopathy, and bilateral proximal hamstring ruptures: a case report.

Low back pain (LBP) is a common complaint in the United States, with an incidence of 6.3%-15.4% and yearly recurrence in 54%-90% of patients.1 Trends show more frequent diagnostic testing, opioid use, and surgical intervention as the incidence of LBP increases.2 LBP is defined as pain at and near the lumbosacral region that can vary with physical activity and time. LBP is usually related to pathology of muscles, ligaments, spinal column joints, nerve roots, and the spinal cord. During the assessment of LBP, practitioners must also consider less common causes of pain in that region. For instanc

Incidence of sports injuries in elite competitive and recreational windsurfers.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of injury in windsurfing and to consider methods of prevention. METHODS: A total of 107 raceboard (RB) and wave/slalom (WS) national/international competitors and recreational (REC) windsurfers completed a questionnaire on injury incidence over two years. Recurrent injury, ability level, and any preventive measures taken were noted. RESULTS: Overall the injury incidence was 1.5/person/year. The WS group suffered more injuries (2.0/person/year) than the RB (1.0) or REC (1.2) group. The most common injury was muscle strain at 35% of new injuries, much hi

Penetrating renal trauma: CT evaluation.

Mandatory surgical exploration of penetrating renal injuries has been advocated for adequate assessment and repair of renal and retroperitoneal injuries. We evaluated 27 consecutive patients with deep stab wounds of the flank and back who were thought to be at risk for renal injury. Twenty-two patients were studied by CT, 11 by excretory urography, and three by angiography. No correlation was found between the presence and amount of hematuria and the extent of renal injury. Excretory urography was also of little use; the extent of renal parenchymal injury was underestimated, overestimated, or

Underreporting of work-related low back pain among registered nurses: A mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying and addressing work-related health problems early is crucial, but workers often perceive barriers in reporting these to management. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with nurses' reporting of work-related low back pain to their managers and explored the reasons why nurses with patient handling injuries did not report them. METHODS: This study is a concurrent mixed-method analysis of data from two statewide cross-sectional surveys of California registered nurses conducted in 2013 and 2016. The reporting of work-related low back pain to management (n

A lower-back focused motion capture and electromyography dataset of Australian sheep shearers at work.

Lower back pain, the predominant cause of years lived with disability, is widespread among various occupations characterised by prolonged and repetitive movements, including healthcare, agriculture, and construction. Despite this prevalence, evidence on the time-dependent changes in muscular function and corresponding motor control systems that contribute to pain remains limited, largely due to the lack of experimental data collected in real-world environments over extended periods. This paper addresses this gap by introducing an open dataset from an intensely physical and repetitive activity-

A Novel Passive Back-Support Exoskeleton With a Spring-Cable-Differential for Lifting Assistance.

Lower back injuries are the most common work-related musculoskeletal disorders. As a wearable device, a back-support exoskeleton (BSE) can reduce the risk of lower back injuries and passive BSEs can achieve a low device weight. However, with current passive BSEs, there is a problem that the user must push against the device when lifting the leg to walk, which is perceived as particularly uncomfortable due to the resistance. To solve this problem, we propose a novel passive BSE that can automatically distinguish between lifting and walking. A unique spring-cable-differential acts as a torque ge

Musculoskeletal injuries among elite artistic and rhythmic Greek gymnasts: A ten-year study of 156 elite athletes.

Data on elite gymnast injuries outside North America is sparse. We report the injuries recorded over a period of 10 years in 156 Greek elite male and female gymnasts. A total of 2390 injuries were reported for a rate of 1,5 new injuries per year per athlete. Most commonly affected areas were the hip (18.5%), the ankle (16.5%), the lumbar spine (16%) and the foot (16%). The most frequent diagnosis was tendinitis (32%), followed by low back pain (20%), and sprains (12%). Fifteen athletes (9%) sustained serious injuries that required surgery. Rhythmic gymnasts had significantly more overuse type

Technique factors related to ball release speed and trunk injuries in high performance cricket fast bowlers.

In this study we analysed technique, ball speed and trunk injury data collected at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) from 42 high performance male fast bowlers over a four year period. We found several notable technique inter-relationships, technique and ball speed relationships, and associations between technique and trunk injuries. A more front-on shoulder alignment at back foot contact was significantly related to increased shoulder counter-rotation (p < 0.001). Bowlers who released the ball at greater speeds had an extended front knee, or extended their front knee, during the front f

Unassisted childbirth or homicide--different appraisals of severe injuries in a newborn.

A case of a 24-year-old woman who gave birth to a mature newborn is reported. Many injuries at the head, neck and shoulders, back, mouth and throat which at least partly indicated unassisted childbirth were observed during autopsy. Some injuries, especially the different scull fractures were discussed controversially on trial. One expert postulated a coaction of unassisted childbirth and blunt head trauma to be responsible for the exitus. The other expert considered it possible that all injuries could originate from unassisted childbirth. The court consented to the opinion that all injuries co

Longitudinal Analysis of Subsequent Musculoskeletal Injuries and Predictive Value of Index Injuries in Collegiate Women's Field Hockey.

This study investigates the longitudinal patterns of musculoskeletal injuries in an NCAA field hockey team, emphasizing the predictive value of index injuries on subsequent injury rates. Analyzing a dataset from a women's collegiate field hockey team, this research monitored 810 injuries across 124 athletes from 2008 to 2024. The study categorized injuries as local, nonlocal, and recurrent, employing a negative binomial regression to assess the impact of index injuries on the total number of career injuries. Results indicated that ankle sprains, hamstring strains, and back strains significantl

Low back pain under control - Bartzokas' maneuver: a case report.

Low back pain (lumbago) is a common health problem globally. It is related to age, modern lifestyle (no exercise etc), and injuries. Its treatment includes a very broad spectrum of methods and its prevention is still unclear. We present Aristides, a 52-year old male, who has been suffering from low back pain for 10 years, and discovered a preventive and therapeutic maneuver that has helped him to significantly decrease the acute and chronic attacks of low back pain that were haunting him. We present the "Bartzokas' maneuver", a very simple and effective therapeutic - as well as preventive - man
