Correlated infections: quantifying individual heterogeneity in the spread of infectious diseases.

In this paper, we propose new methods for investigating the extent of heterogeneity in effective contact rates relevant to the transmission of infections. These methods exploit the correlations between ages at infection for different infections within individuals. The methods are developed for serological surveys, which provide accessible individual data on several infections, and are applied to a wide range of infections. We find that childhood infections are often highly correlated within individuals in early childhood, with the correlations persisting into adulthood only for infections shar

Transmission dynamics of West Nile virus in mosquitoes and corvids and non-corvids.

There are more than 300 avian species that can transmit West Nile virus (WNv). In general, the corvid and non-corvid families of birds have different responses to the virus, with corvids suffering a higher disease-induced mortality rate. By taking both corvids and non-corvids as the primary reservoir hosts and mosquitoes as vectors; we formulate and study a system of ordinary differential equations to model a single season of the transmission dynamics of WNv in the mosquito-bird cycle. We calculate the basic reproduction number and analyze the existence and stability of the equilibria. The exi

Dynamics of an age-of-infection cholera model.

A new model for the dynamics of cholera is formulated that incorporates both the infection age of infectious individuals and biological age of pathogen in the environment. The basic reproduction number is defined and proved to be a sharp threshold determining whether or not cholera dies out. Final size relations for cholera outbreaks are derived for simplified models when input and death are neglected.

Dynamics of rabies epidemics and the impact of control efforts in Guangdong Province, China.

Rabies is a major public health problem in some developing countries including China. One of the reasons is that there is a very large number of dogs, both domestic and stray, especially in Guangdong Province which has the third most rabies cases (after Guangxi and Hunan) among the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in Mainland China, and at least 18.2% of the human rabies cases are caused by stray dogs. In this paper, based on the reported data and characteristics of the rabies infection in Guangdong Province, we propose a mathematical model for the dog-human transmission of

Transmission dynamics of primary pneumonic plague in the USA.

Plague is thought to have killed millions during three catastrophic pandemics. Primary pneumonic plague, the most severe form of the disease, is transmissible from person-to-person and has the potential for propagating epidemics. Efforts to quantify its transmission potential have relied on published data from large outbreaks, an approach that artificially inflates the basic reproductive number (R(0)) and skews the distribution of individual infectiousness. Using data for all primary pneumonic plague cases reported in the USA from 1900 to 2009, we determined that the majority of cases will fai

A model for the transmission dynamics of Orientia tsutsugamushi among its natural reservoirs.

The bacteria Orientia tsutsugamushi is the causative agent of scrub typhus, a prevalent disease in Asian countries that can affect humans and which shows an alarming increase of cases during the last years, especially in rural areas. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for scrub typhus, and antibiotic treatments successfully used in the past appear to be inefficient to treat some strains of O. tsutsugamushi. We introduce a mathematical model that approximates the dynamics of the bacteria among its natural reservoirs. After computing the basic reproductive number from the proposed model, we expl

Disentangling the drivers of heterogeneity in SARS-CoV-2 transmission from data on viral load and daily contact rates.

SARS-CoV-2 transmission is highly overdispersed, with a minority of individuals responsible for the majority of transmission, though the drivers of this heterogeneity are unclear. Here, we assess the contribution of variation in viral load and daily contact rates to this heterogeneity by combining published viral load estimates and contact survey data in a mathematical model to estimate the secondary infection distribution. Using data from the BBC Pandemic and CoMix contact surveys, we estimate the secondary infection distribution throughout the pandemic in the UK in 2020, and the effectivenes

Inferring Seasonal Modulation of Early SARS-CoV-2 Transmissibility from Cross-Country Environmental and Population-Level Predictors.

Seasonal variation in SARS-CoV-2 transmissibility is difficult to estimate directly from year-round epidemic data because interventions, behavior, reporting, immunity, and viral evolution change concurrently. We therefore asked whether cross-country differences observed during the initial exponential-growth phase could be used to infer country-specific seasonal modulation. Early-pandemic basic reproduction numbers (R0) from 118 countries were linked to 96 harmonized environmental and population-level predictors. Among nine candidate algorithms evaluated across 100 repeated train-test splits, r

The role of multiscale and delayed dynamics in tuberculosis Transmission and control: a mathematical approach.

Transmission of tuberculosis (TB) among human population depends on an individual's infectiousness, which is further determined by the concentration of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) in the body. Additionally, Mtb is resistant to dryness, cold, acidic, and alkaline environments and can survive in acidic and alkaline environments for 4-5 years. Mtb in the environment plays a significant role in TB transmission and should not be overlooked. To investigate the epidemiologic relationships among pathogens, hosts, and the environment, we first develop a multiscale TB model that includes multiple t

A nonlinear time-delay modeling case study of Tuberculosis transmission in Algeria: 1990-2024.

This study develops a nonlinear time-delay mathematical model to investigate the transmission dynamics of tuberculosis in Algeria over the period 1990-2024. The model explicitly incorporates a delay representing the incubation period between infection and the onset of infectiousness, which significantly affects system behavior by potentially inducing instability and oscillatory dynamics. In particular, increasing the delay can destabilize the endemic equilibrium and lead to periodic outbreaks through Hopf bifurcation. The basic reproduction number $ \mathcal{R}_0 $ is derived, and rigorous ana

A flexible framework for local-level estimation of the effective reproductive number in geographic regions with sparse data.

BACKGROUND: Our research focuses on local-level estimation of the effective reproductive number, which describes the transmissibility of an infectious disease and represents the average number of individuals one infectious person infects at a given time. The ability to accurately estimate the infectious disease reproductive number in geographically granular regions is critical for disaster planning and resource allocation. However, not all regions have sufficient infectious disease outcome data; this lack of data presents a significant challenge for accurate estimation. METHODS: To overcome t

A Mathematical Model Evaluating the Impact of Asymptomatic COVID-19 Cases and Reinfection.

In this study, an epidemic model with a constant recruitment rate of susceptible individuals with a bilinear transmission rate of infection is considered. Vaccination-type treatment is inspected to minimize the impact of the disease. The asymptomatic infected and the vaccinated compartments are taken with regard to the circumstances of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic 2020-2025. The impact of these two compartments is examined specifically to shed light on the behavioral dynamics. Local as well as the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium point and the endemic equilibrium

Modelling with SPEED: a Stochastic Predictor of Early Epidemic Detection.

The frequency of emerging infectious disease outbreaks continues to rise, necessitating predictive frameworks for public health decision-making. This study introduces the Stochastic Predictor of Early Epidemic Detection (SPEED) model, an adaptation of the classic Susceptible-Infected-Recovered model, employing a Gillespie-like algorithm to simulate early-stage stochastic disease transmission. SPEED incorporates individual-level detection probabilities based on the infection time and the lag from GP consultation to lab confirmation. The model dynamically adjusts to public health responses by en

Impact of biosecurity and immunological memory in curtailing ratio-dependent transmission of anthrax in livestock.

Delineating the dynamics of highly lethal anthrax disease in a biosecured livestock farm and impact of anthrax vaccination is presented through a modified deterministic $SIRBV$ model incorporating nonlinear ratio-dependent disease transmission rate. The basic reproduction number $(R_{0})$ of the system is computed and employed to explore the existence and asymptotic stability around the steady states of the system. The system experiences transcritical bifurcation at the disease-free steady state for $R_{0} = 1$. Waning of recovery-derived immunity and vaccination-derived immunity trigger backw

Wastewater-based effective reproduction number and prediction under the absence of shedding information.

Estimating effective reproduction number (Re) and predicting disease incidences are essential to formulate effective strategies for disease control. Although recent studies developed models for inferring Re from wastewater-based data, they require information on shedding dynamics. Here, we proposed a framework of Re estimation and prediction without shedding information. The framework consists of a space-state model for smoothing wastewater-based data and a renewal equation modified for wastewater-based data. The applicability of the framework was tested with simulated data and real-world data

Modelling of tuberculosis dynamics incorporating indirect transmission of contaminated environment and infectivity of smear-negative individuals: A case study for Xinjiang, China.

Xinjiang has been one of the high incidence areas of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in China. Besides being infected by direct contacting with active PTB individuals (direct infection), the susceptible would be infected because of the exposure to the environment contaminated by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (indirect infection). Active PTB individuals include not only the smear-positive PTB (PTB+) but also the smear-negative PTB (PTB-) who are infectious due to their ability to release tiny Mycobacterium tuberculosis particles even in the absence of visible Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum. Threshold dynamics of a reaction-advection-diffusion schistosomiasis epidemic model with seasonality and spatial heterogeneity.

Most water-borne disease models ignore the advection of water flows in order to simplify the mathematical analysis and numerical computation. However, advection can play an important role in determining the disease transmission dynamics. In this paper, we investigate the long-term dynamics of a periodic reaction-advection-diffusion schistosomiasis model and explore the joint impact of advection, seasonality and spatial heterogeneity on the transmission of the disease. We derive the basic reproduction number R 0 and show that the disease-free periodic solution is globally attractive when R 0

Modeling the Transmission Dynamics of Rabies for Dog, Chinese Ferret Badger and Human Interactions in Zhejiang Province, China.

Human rabies is one of the major public health problems in China with an average of 1977 cases per year. It is estimated that 95% of these human rabies cases are due to dog bites. In recent years, the number of wildlife-associated human rabies cases has increased, particularly in the southeast and northeast regions of mainland China. Chinese ferret badgers (CFBs) are one of the most popular wildlife animals which are distributed mostly in the southeast region of China. Human cases caused by rabid CFB were first recorded in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, in 1994. From 1996 to 2004, more than 30 hum

Plague disease model with weather seasonality.

The plague disease model that include the effect of seasonal weather variation in its transmission is investigated in this paper. The disease is caused by an extremely virulent bacteria Yersinia pestis named after a French bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin. The analysis shows that, when the periodic reproduction number (RT) is greater than one there exist a globally asymptotically stable disease free equilibrium solution (DFS). Using fundamental existence-uniqueness theorem we were able to prove the existence of positive periodic solutions. The analysis further shows that when RT > 1 then there

Understanding the effects of intermittent shedding on the transmission of infectious diseases: example of salmonellosis in pigs.

A number of environmentally transmitted infectious diseases are characterized by intermittent infectiousness of infected hosts. However, it is unclear whether intermittent infectiousness must be explicitly accounted for in mathematical models for these diseases or if a simplified modelling approach is acceptable. To address this question we study the transmission of salmonellosis between penned pigs in a grower-finisher facility. The model considers indirect transmission, growth of free-living Salmonella within the environment, and environmental decontamination. The model is used to evaluate t
