Discipline-specific adaptation patterns in respiratory and lower limb musculotendinous structures: cyclists vs. basketball players.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at assessing how chronic exposure to specific exercise training (high-intensity intervals vs. endurance), comparing experienced basketball-players (BP, N.=16), cyclists (CY, N.=16), and non-specifically trained individuals (CN, N.=16), influences the structural and functional characteristics of both lower limb and respiratory musculotendinous structures. METHODS: Vastus lateralis, gastrocnemius lateralis, and medialis, diaphragm muscles, as well as patellar tendon and Achilles tendon, were assessed using B-mode ultrasonography. Maximal voluntary isometric and pass

Mechanisms of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tears in Professional National Basketball Association Players: A Video Analysis.

A systematic search was performed of online databases for any anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries within the NBA. Video was obtained of injuries occurring during competition and downloaded for 2-dimensional video analysis. Thirty-five in-game videos were obtained for analysis. Of the reviewed cases, 19% were noncontact ACL injuries where there was no player-to-player contact from an opposing player. Three injury mechanism categories were found based on the events at the point of initial ground contact of the foot of the injured limb: single-leg casting (mean dorsiflexion angle 18.9° (14.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Decreases the Decline of Speed during Repeated Sprinting in Basketball Athletes.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can improve countermovement jump performance, fatigue index and alleviate the speed decline during repeated shuttle sprints in trained basketball players. Thirteen trained basketball players were divided into the tDCS trial and sham trial by the random crossover design. The tDCS trial was stimulated with 2-mA current in the M1 area in the middle of the top of the head for 20 min. For the sham trial, the current was turned off after 5 s, stopping the electrical stimulation. After warming up, the pl

High School Basketball Coach and Player Perspectives on Warm-Up Routines and Lower Extremity Injuries.

BACKGROUND: While participation in sports-related activities results in improved health outcomes, high school athletes are at risk for lower extremity injuries, especially ankle, knee, and thigh injuries. Efforts to promote the adoption and implementation of evidence-driven approaches to reduce injury risk among school-aged athletes are needed. However, there is limited research regarding the perceived barriers, facilitators, and adherence factors that may influence the successful implementation of effective warm-up routines among this population. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study usi

The effects of small-sided games on physical fitness in basketball players: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: As a type of game-based training (GBT), small-sided games (SSGs) are often compared with non-game-based training (NGBT) in team sports. However, there is still no consensus on the chronic effects between SSGs and NGBT, including high intensity interval training (HIIT) and traditional technical drills (TTD), on physical performance in basketball players. OBJECTIVE: To systematically compare the chronic effects of SSGs versus NGBT on the physical fitness in basketball players through meta-analysis and to explore the moderator effects of training variables in SSGs. METHODS: A system

Does the 10% Asymmetry Threshold Matter? Effects of Lower-Limb Asymmetries on Jumping and Agility in Basketball.

Background: Lower-limb asymmetry is linked to injury risk and may impair performance, yet evidence in basketball is inconsistent. A commonly cited 10% threshold is proposed as critical, but its practical relevance in basketball-specific tasks remains unclear. This study examined the effects of asymmetry on vertical jump and agility performance in basketball players, with particular focus on the 10% threshold. Methods: Male university basketball players (n = 20) completed unilateral jump tests (single-leg countermovement jump, single-hop, triple-hop, 6 m hop) and a bilateral COD (change of dire
