The Cerebellum and the Motor Cortex: Multiple Networks Controlling Multiple Aspects of Behavior.

The cerebellum and its thalamic projections to the primary motor cortex (M1) are well known to play an essential role in executing daily actions. Anatomic investigations in animals and postmortem humans have established the reciprocal connections between these regions; however, how these pathways can shape cortical activity in behavioral contexts and help promote recovery in neuropathological conditions remains not well understood. The present review aims to provide a comprehensive description of these pathways in animals and humans and discuss how novel noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) me

Plants' emission behaviors under dual control of pollutant concentration and quantity.

Quantity-based and concentration-based limits are two common environmental permitting approaches utilized by government worldwide in environmental management. While existing literature is still unambiguous about roles played by quantity-based versus concentration-based limits in environmental management, it becomes evident that relying exclusively on concentration-based or quantity-based limits to control plant emissions may not necessarily result in improved environmental quality. This paper leverages a unique opportunity arising from a recent reform in China's Pollutant Emission Permit Syste

A Randomized Controlled Neuroimaging Trial of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Fibromyalgia Pain.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by pervasive pain-related symptomatology and high levels of negative affect. Mind-body treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) appear to foster improvement in FM via reductions in pain-related catastrophizing, a set of negative, pain-amplifying cognitive and emotional processes. However, the neural underpinnings of CBT's catastrophizing-reducing effects remain uncertain. This randomized controlled mechanistic trial was designed to assess CBT's effects on pain catastrophizing and its underlying brain circuitry. METHODS: Of 114 enrolle

Serotonin distinctly controls behavioral states in restrained and freely moving Drosophila.

When trapped in a physical restraint, animals must select an escape strategy to increase their chances of survival. After falling into an inescapable trap, they react with stereotypical behaviors that differ from those displayed in escapable situations. Such behaviors involve either a wriggling response to unlock the trap or feigning death to fend off a predator attack. The neural mechanisms that regulate animal behaviors have been well characterized for escapable situations but not for inescapable traps. We report that restrained vinegar flies exhibit alternating flailing and immobility to fr

Control of Behavioral Arousal and Defense by a Glutamatergic Midbrain-Amygdala Pathway in Mice.

In response to external threatening signals, animals evolve a series of defensive behaviors that depend on heightened arousal. It is believed that arousal and defensive behaviors are coordinately regulated by specific neurocircuits in the central nervous system. The ventral tegmental area (VTA) is a key structure located in the ventral midbrain of mice. The activity of VTA glutamatergic neurons has recently been shown to be closely related to sleep-wake behavior. However, the specific role of VTA glutamatergic neurons in sleep-wake regulation, associated physiological functions, and underlying

Adsorption behavior and mechanism of sulfonamides on controllably synthesized covalent organic frameworks.

In this work, four kinds of covalent organic framework (COF) materials (TpPa-1, TpBD, TpDT, and TFBBD) with different pore sizes or functional groups were synthesized by an ultrasonic method for the adsorption of five sulfonamides. Optimization experiments regarding the adsorption time, vortex speed, and pH were carried out to improve adsorption efficiency. In addition, kinetic and thermodynamic experiments were conducted to explore the adsorption mechanism of the sulfonamides on the different COFs. The adsorption processes of the five sulfonamides on the four COFs fit the pseudo-second-order

Behavioral Profile of Children With Vocal Fold Nodules-A Case-control Study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this case-control study was to evaluate the overall behavior of children with vocal fold nodules (VNs). METHODS: The study group included children with VNs between 4 and 15 years old diagnosed using fiberoptic video laryngoscopy with stroboscopy in a tertiary university hospital. As a control group, children between 4 and 13 years old without VNs, routinely followed up in a primary care facility, were included in the study. Parents of the participants completed the parent-proxy strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ), a brief behavioral screening questionnaire de

Trusting outgroup, but not ingroup members, requires control: neural and behavioral evidence.

Trust and cooperation often break down across group boundaries, contributing to pernicious consequences, from polarized political structures to intractable conflict. As such, addressing such conflicts require first understanding why trust is reduced in intergroup settings. Here, we clarify the structure of intergroup trust using neuroscientific and behavioral methods. We found that trusting ingroup members produced activity in brain areas associated with reward, whereas trusting outgroup members produced activity in areas associated with top-down control. Behaviorally, time pressure-which redu

Neuromodulatory Control of Long-Term Behavioral Patterns and Individuality across Development.

Animals generate complex patterns of behavior across development that may be shared or unique to individuals. Here, we examine the contributions of developmental programs and individual variation to behavior by monitoring single Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes over their complete developmental trajectories and quantifying their behavior at high spatiotemporal resolution. These measurements reveal reproducible trajectories of spontaneous foraging behaviors that are stereotyped within and between developmental stages. Dopamine, serotonin, the neuropeptide receptor NPR-1, and the TGF-β peptide D

Impulse control behaviors and subthalamic deep brain stimulation in Parkinson disease.

To determine the clinical and demographic correlates of persistent, remitting, and new-onset impulse control behaviors (ICBs) before and after subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD). We compared the pre- and post-surgical prevalence of ICBs, classified as impulse control disorders (ICD), dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), and punding in 150 consecutive PD STN-DBS-treated patients and determined the association with motor, cognitive, neuropsychological, and neuropsychiatric endpoints. At baseline (before STN-DBS), ICBs were associated with younger age (p =

Internet-based cognitive-behavior therapy for procrastination: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Procrastination can be a persistent behavior pattern associated with personal distress. However, research investigating different treatment interventions is scarce, and no randomized controlled trial has examined the efficacy of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT). Meanwhile, Internet-based CBT has been found promising for several conditions, but has not yet been used for procrastination. METHOD: Participants (N = 150) were randomized to guided self-help, unguided self-help, and wait-list control. Outcome measures were administered before and after treatment, or weekly throughout the

Apathy and Impulse Control Disorders: Yin & Yang of Dopamine Dependent Behaviors.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). Apathy and impulse control disorders (ICD) are two opposite motivational expressions of a continuous behavioural spectrum involving hypo- and hyperdopaminergia. Both syndromes share pathological (decreased vs increased) dopamine receptor stimulation states. Apathy belongs to the spectrum of hypodopaminergic symptoms together with anhedonia, anxiety and depression. Apathy is a key symptom of PD which worsens with disease progression. Animal models, imaging and pharmacological studies concur in pointing out dopa

Behavioral interventions to improve hypertension control in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system.

Hypertension is a common and costly disease among US veterans. The Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system is the largest integrated healthcare provider in the United States and reviewing hypertension interventions developed in the VA may inform interventions delivered in other integrated healthcare systems. This review describes behavioral interventions to improve hypertension control that have been conducted in the VA since 1970. The authors identified 27 articles representing 15 behavioral interventional trials. Studies were heterogeneous across patients, providers, interventionist, and int

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression in Parkinson's disease: a randomized, controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the negative effects of depression in Parkinson's disease, there is currently no evidence-based standard of care. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of individually administered cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), relative to clinical monitoring (with no new treatment), for depression in this medical population. METHOD: Eighty depressed (based on DSM-IV criteria) patients with Parkinson's disease participated in a randomized, controlled trial of CBT relative to clinical monitoring (1:1 ratio) in an academic medical center from April 2007 to July 2010. Behavioral response to pain in drowsy and sleeping neonates: a randomized control study.

In a randomized controlled design, 100 healthy, term neonates in the first week of life, undergoing heel prick for routine screening were randomized to receive a heel prick in either the drowsy/sleeping state or the awake (but not fussy or crying) state. 48 babies in sleeping or drowsy states and 47 in the awake states were analyzed. Infants in the drowsy/sleeping states scored significantly lower on the Neonatal Infant Pain Score (NIPS) (median score 5) at 30 seconds post stimulus compared with infants in higher states of alertness (median score 6). They also had a shorter total duration of c
