Intra-lingual suture pattern for prevention of self-suckling in cows.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate a new less-invasive surgical technique for prevention of self-suckling in dairy cows. A pre-clinical (experimental study) was conducted on three goats to detect the possible complications of the technique and the lingual pathological changes. The main clinical study was carried out on 37 dairy cows of mixed breeds, suffered from self-suckling, with a follow up period of six months. No serious complications were observed in the experimental study and histopathological evaluation revealed a well-formed neither caseated nor necrotizing granulomat

Phase synchronized 6 Hz transcranial electric and magnetic stimulation boosts frontal theta activity and enhances working memory.

Network-level synchronization of theta oscillations in the cerebral cortex is linked to many vital cognitive functions across daily life, such as executive functions or regulation of arousal and consciousness. However, while neuroimaging has uncovered the ubiquitous functional relevance of theta rhythms in cognition, there remains a limited set of techniques for externally enhancing and stabilizing theta in the human brain non-invasively. Here, we developed and employed a new phase-synchronized low-intensity electric and magnetic stimulation technique to induce and stabilize narrowband 6-Hz th

Decay of Two-Dimensional Superfluid Turbulence over Pinning Surface.

We report on the free decay of quasi-two-dimensional turbulence in superfluid ^{4}He confined within nanofluidic channels. Using a pump-probe technique, we observe a complex decay of the vortex density L(t) that deviates from a simple power law. The decay exhibits a universal fast transient, scaling as L∝t^{-2}, followed by a slower nonuniversal regime that depends on the geometry and flow conditions. We demonstrate that this behavior is governed by the interplay between vortex pinning on the disordered topography of the channel walls and the mobilizing effect of the weak probe flow. A numeric

Different populations of blacklegged tick nymphs exhibit differences in questing behavior that have implications for human lyme disease risk.

Animal behavior can have profound effects on pathogen transmission and disease incidence. We studied the questing (= host-seeking) behavior of blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) nymphs, which are the primary vectors of Lyme disease in the eastern United States. Lyme disease is common in northern but not in southern regions, and prior ecological studies have found that standard methods used to collect host-seeking nymphs in northern regions are unsuccessful in the south. This led us to hypothesize that there are behavior differences between northern and southern nymphs that alter how readily

Reward learning and attention in risky alcohol use: Absence of Pavlovian influences but altered response bias in high-risk drinkers.

Reward learning can contribute to addictive behaviors by shaping attention and action selection. While reward-associated stimuli are known to capture attention, it remains unclear whether such learning can also guide behavior without stimulus-outcome contingency awareness. This study examined whether implicitly learned reward associations influence both attention and action selection, and how these effects relate to risky alcohol use. Eighty university students (40 low-risk and 40 high-risk drinkers) completed a Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer task combined with an emotional attentional bli

A tailored e-learning gives long-term changes in determinants of GPs' benzodiazepines prescribing: a pretest-posttest study with self-report assessments.

Objective: Despite guidelines and campaigns, general practitioners (GPs) continue to overprescribe benzodiazepines (BZDs). New approaches to improve prescribing are needed. Using behavior change techniques and tailoring interventions to user characteristics are vital to promote behavior change. This study evaluated the impact of a tailored e-learning module on factors known to determine BZD prescribing within GPs.Design: A pretest-posttest study design with three self-report assessments concerning determinants of BZD prescribing: at baseline, immediately after the module (short term) and six m

A preclinical study of deep brain stimulation in the ventral tegmental area for alleviating positive psychotic-like behaviors in mice.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a clinical intervention for the treatment of movement disorders. It has also been applied to the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as depression, anorexia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and schizophrenia. Psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression can lead to psychosis, which can cause patients to lose touch with reality. The ventral tegmental area (VTA), located near the midline of the midbrain, is an important region involved in psychosis. However, the clinical application of electrical stimulation of t

Fluid-Structure Interaction in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Effect of Modeling Techniques.

In this work, the impact of modeling techniques on predicting the mechanical behaviors of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is systematically investigated. The fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model for simultaneously capturing the transient interaction between blood flow dynamics and wall mechanics was compared with its simplified techniques, that is, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) or computational solid stress (CSS) model. Results demonstrated that CFD exhibited relatively smaller vortexes and tends to overestimate the fluid wall shear stress, compared to FSI. On the contrary, the minimal

A new mixed agent-based network and compartmental simulation framework for joint modeling of related infectious diseases- application to sexually transmitted infections.

BACKGROUND: A model that jointly simulates infectious diseases with common modes of transmission can serve as a decision-analytic tool to identify optimal intervention combinations for overall disease prevention. In the United States, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a huge economic burden, with a large fraction of the burden attributed to HIV. Data also show interactions between HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as higher risk of acquisition and progression of co-infections among persons with HIV compared to persons without. However, given the wide range in

Hydrogen Sulfide Antagonizes Chronic Restraint Stress-Induced Depressive-Like Behaviors via Upregulation of Adiponectin.

Backgroud: Chronic restraint stress (CRS) induces depressive-like behaviors in rodents, which involves dysregulation of hippocampal synapse formation and excessive autophagy. Adiponectin has antidepressant activity. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a novel gasotransmitter. The present work was to investigate whether H2S antagonizes CRS-induced depressive-like behaviors in rats and to explore whether its potential mechanism involves ameliorated synaptic and autophagic dysregulation by upregulation of adiponectin. Methods: Depressive-like behavior was analyzed by the tail suspension test (TST), novelty

Inducible change in the behavior of resistance arteries from circulating factor in preeclampsia: an effect specific to myometrial vessels from pregnant women.

OBJECTIVE: It has previously been observed that a circulating factor or factors may be responsible for the changes in vessel behavior that are postulated to underlie the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. We wished to ascertain whether such changes in endothelial function are dependent on the vascular bed under investigation. STUDY DESIGN: Myometrial and infracolic omental vessels resistance vessels were obtained at cesarean delivery or hysterectomy. After incubation with either plasma from women with preeclampsia or plasma from normotensive pregnant women, myographic techniques were used to asses

Light color and the commercial broiler: effect on behavior, fear, and stress.

Light is an important component in poultry production, and it may impact bird behavior, an important component of animal welfare. Light-emitting diode (LED) lamps are of interest for broiler production since they are inexpensive to run and provide monochromatic colors. This study aimed to understand the impact of three light colors (blue, green, or white), provided by LED lighting, on behavioral expression, stress and fear levels of broilers. A total of 14,256 male and female broilers of 2 genotypes (Ross EPMx708 and Ross YPMx708) were housed in 9 rooms in 2 blocked trials (3 room replicates p

Photochemically-induced ischemia of the rat sciatic nerve produces a dose-dependent and highly reproducible mechanical, heat and cold allodynia, and signs of spontaneous pain.

Sensory abnormalities and changes in spontaneous behavior were examined after a photochemically induced ischemic lesion of the rat sciatic nerve. Male adult rats were anesthetized and the sciatic nerve was exposed. After the intravenous injection of a photosensitizing dye, erythrosin B, the exposed nerve was irradiated just proximal to the nerve trifurcation with light from an argon laser. Three different irradiation times were used, 30 s, 1 and 2 min. In sham-operated rats, the exposed sciatic nerve was irradiated for 2 min without prior injection of the erythrosin B. Rats were tested for the

Characteristics of ethanol drinking patterns under schedule-induced polydipsia.

Rats were induced to consume concentrations of ethanol between 5% and 10% (w/v) using the schedule-induced polydipsia technique. Although the substitution of ethanol solutions for water disrupted the usual post-pellet pattern of drinking, large amounts of ethanol were consumed and sound-induced convulsions were observed during ethanol withdrawal. In subsequent experiments, other rats chose 5% and sometimes 10% ethanol solutions over water where both water and ethanol were freely available during the first session of exposure to ethanol. Convulsions and wild running behavior could be observed i

Extraglandular Warthin's tumors.

Warthin's tumor or papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum (PCL) represents a clinically significant entity, not because of pernicious behavior, but because its cytohistological characteristics tell us much about the development and morphology of the parotid region. Three cases operated on in which PCL developed in an extraglandular location from the parotid, formed the basis for a series of observations on what is known about: 1. etiology of PCL; 2. the nature of the lymphocytic components; 3. the relatively high incidence of bilateral and multiple occurrence, as well as male predominance. Detecting Awareness in the Intensive Care Unit Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

OBJECTIVE: Signs of awareness after acute severe brain injury are critical for informing goals-of-care decisions, ranging from the continuation of aggressive life-sustaining therapy to comfort-focused end-of-life measures. However, awareness may go undetected in some critically ill patients when assessed using bedside behavioral neurological examination. Here, we use functional near-infrared spectroscopy to identify covert awareness in acute brain injured patients who are unable to follow behavioral commands. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, consecutive cross-sectional study of 32 critica

Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for studying the association of gold nanoparticles with compounds of clinical interest.

The widespread use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in biomedical and analytical applications arises from their versatile surface functionalization with clinically relevant compounds. Investigating their binding behavior using simple model compounds of clinical interest is essential for gaining fundamental insight into more complex interaction systems. Herein, single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) and flow field-flow fractionation (FlFFF) coupled with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were employed to investigate the binding and aggregatio
