Sexual transmission risk behavior of adolescents With HIV acquired perinatally or through risky behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence and predictors of the transmission-related behaviors of adolescents with HIV acquired perinatally (perinatal) or through risky behaviors (behavioral). METHODS: HIV-positive adolescents (n = 166) aged 13-21, receiving care in 3 US cities, reported sexual behaviors, drug use, and psychosocial and demographic characteristics. HIV-related data were abstracted from medical records. RESULTS: Of 105 sexually experienced adolescents reporting risk history (42 perinatal, 63 behavioral), 49 had engaged in unprotected sex since learning their diagnosis (12 perinata

Prenatal lipopolysaccharide exposure affects maternal behavior and male offspring sexual behavior in adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effects of prenatal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure on the maternal behavior of pregnant rats and the physical development and sexual behavior of their male offspring in adulthood. METHODS: For two experiments, pregnant rats were injected with LPS (250 microg/kg, i.p.) on gestation day (GD) 21. In the first experiment, the maternal behavior (postnatal day, PND, 6) and the dam's open-field general activity (PND7) were evaluated. In the second experiment, the maternal pre- and postnatal parameters, the pup's development, the offspring's sexual behavior i

Family history of suicidal behavior predicts impulsive-aggressive behavior levels in psychiatric outpatients.

OBJECTIVES: Impulsive-aggressive traits have been proposed as mediators of the transmission of suicidal behavior in families. Our aim was to investigate the association between family history of suicidal behavior, and expressions of impulsivity and aggressive behavior, in a clinical population. METHODS: A sample of n=474 psychiatric outpatient subjects were assessed by means of standardized interviews for Axis I and II psychopathology, history of suicidal behavior in subjects and their family, and measures of impulsive-aggressive behaviors (IAB). RESULTS: A total of n=38 (8%) probands had a

An examination of antecedents to coal miners' hearing protection behaviors: a test of the theory of planned behavior.

PROBLEM: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's [NIOSH] National Occupational Research Agenda (DHHS Publication No. 96-115) reports that approximately 50% of miners will experience hearing loss by age 50, compared to only 9% of the general population. The present investigation examines three antecedents believed to be associated with miner's use of hearing protection. METHOD: A posttest-delayed-posttest-control group field research design was employed to assess antecedents toward wearing hearing protection. RESULTS: Following the initial posttest, miners' attitudes and s

Disruptive behavior disorders in offspring of parents with major depression: associations with parental behavior disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Although the offspring of parents with major depressive disorder (MDD) are at increased risk to develop disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) in addition to MDD, it remains unclear whether this heightened risk is due to MDD or to comorbid DBD in the parents. METHOD: In a secondary analysis of longitudinal data from offspring at risk for MDD and panic disorder and comparison children, we stratified 169 children of parents who had been treated for MDD based upon presence (n=50) or absence (n=119) of parental history of DBD (ADHD, oppositional disorder, and conduct disorder) and contras

Spontaneous social behaviors discriminate behavioral dementias from psychiatric disorders and other dementias.

OBJECTIVE: Changes in social behavior are often the first symptoms of neurodegenerative disease. Patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) often go undiagnosed, or are misclassified as psychiatric patients, because in the absence of cognitive deficits, nonexperts fail to recognize these social changes as dementia symptoms. The object of this study was to improve screening for behavioral dementias in primary care and mental health settings by quantifying spontaneous social behaviors specific to FTLD. METHOD: In a university hospital dementia clinic, examiners blind to subject diag

Physical activity and sedentary behavior patterns are associated with selected adolescent health risk behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about how physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior, and various adolescent health risk behaviors are associated. The objective of this study was to examine relationships between PA and sedentary behavior patterns and an array of risk behaviors, including leading causes of adolescent morbidity/mortality. METHODS: Nationally representative self-reported data were collected (National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health; wave I: 1994-1995; II: 1996; N = 11957). Previously developed and validated cluster analyses identified 7 homogeneous groups of adolescents shari

Interaction of reinforcement schedules, a behavioral prosthesis, and work-related behavior in adults with mental retardation.

The effects of variable-interval (VI) and fixed-ratio (FR) schedules of reinforcement for work-related behavior and an organizer for the work materials (behavioral prosthesis) were evaluated with 3 adults with severe or profound mental retardation. The participants had been recommended for study because of high rates of off-task and aberrant behavior in their daily vocational training programs. For 2 participants, VI and FR schedules resulted in the same outcome: more aberrant behavior than on-task and off-task behavior combined. The FR schedule nearly eliminated emission of aberrant and off-t

Assessment of behavioral and cognitive impulsivity: development and validation of the Lifetime History of Impulsive Behaviors Interview.

The construction and initial psychometric evaluation of an interview assessment of clinically significant impulsivity (Lifetime History of Impulsive Behaviors; LHIB) is presented. Personality-disordered and control subjects participated by completing self-report measures of depression, anxiety and social desirability, along with self-report and laboratory analogue measures of impulsivity, and finally the LHIB. The LHIB demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Supporting concurrent construct validity, scores on the LHIB correlated with other self-report m

A cognitive-behavioral intervention to reduce HIV risk behaviors in crack and injection drug users.

This paper presents the results of a study evaluating the efficacy of a theory-based cognitive-behavioral intervention to reduce HIV risk among street-based crack and injection drug users not currently in drug treatment in Long Beach, California. A nine-session, 4-month enhanced intervention (including HIV counseling and testing) was compared to a two-session standard counseling and testing intervention developed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in terms of their efficacy for reducing drug- and sex-related risk behaviors. The theory-based enhanced intervention rarely was found to

Behavioral versus behavioral and pharmacological treatment in ADHD children attending a summer treatment program.

As part of the behavioral treatment in the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD (MTA9), children participated in an intensive summer treatment program (STP). This study examined the differences between 57 children in the combined treatment (Comb) group, who were medicated, and 60 children in the behavioral treatment (Beh) group, who were unmedicated throughout the STP. Comb children were significantly better than Beh on 5 measures: rule following, good sportsmanship, peer negative nominations, and STP teacher posttreatment ratings of inattention/overactivity. Groups did not differ

[Abnormal behavior induced by thiamine deficiency in rats: muricide and its behavioral and pharmacological characteristics].

When rats were maintained on a thiamine-deficient diet for 30 days, about 70% of the animals showed a mouse-killing response (muricide). The thiamine-deficient killer-rats do not eat but merely killed the mice. Once this abnormal behavior appeared, the response remained, and could not be suppressed by the administration of thiamine hydrochloride plus thiamine-supplemented diet, regardless of a return to normal feeding, growth and heart rate. Drugs that activate the central serotonergic and noradrenergic systems have suppressive effects on it. Conversely, among the various depletions of brain m

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: does cognitive behavioral therapy improve home behavior?

This study evaluates the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in improving the home behavior of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Twenty-five boys (age 7 to 13) with a diagnosis of ADHD were randomized to a CBT or supportive therapy control group. Outcome measures included parent and teacher ratings of the child on the Behavior Problem Checklist-Attention Problem Subscale (BPC-AP), and the Self-Control Rating Scale (SCRS), parent ratings on the Modified Werry Weiss Activity Scale, and child ratings on the Piers Harris Self-Concept Scale and Matching

Styles of oroalimentary behavior: relationship with modulation of emotional behavior and myographic tension of the oral region.

The relationship between styles of oroalimentary behavior and both modulation of aggressive behavior and myographic tension at rest for some muscles engaged in the process of mastication was examined for 24 women. Our data suggested an inverse relation between outward overt hostility and oral appetitive hyperactivation with or without partial masticatory components. Moreover, the oral appetitive activation was negatively correlated with the myographic tension of oral region, particularly the right masseter.

The propensity for nonregulatory ingestive behavior is related to differences in dopamine systems: behavioral and biochemical evidence.

Previous research has shown that animals predisposed to eat and drink in response to electrical stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus (ESLH) are similarly predisposed to drink excessively when tested for schedule-induced polydipsia. The eating and drinking elicited by both experimental paradigms appears to be unrelated to homeostatic need and has been called nonregulatory ingestive behavior. In this study, the relation between properties of dopaminergic neural systems and the predisposition to exhibit nonregulatory ingestive behavior was investigated. It was found that rats that eat and drin

Caregiver Needs and Technology Acceptability for Behavioral-Crisis Support in Children With Neurodevelopmental or Behavioral Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral crises are common and distressing in children with neurodevelopmental or behavioral conditions, and many escalate to emergency service use. Access to behavioral therapy is often constrained. Smartphone applications, in-home systems, and wearable sensors that could support caregivers during crises at home are in active development, but few studies have asked caregivers what they would accept or want from such tools. METHODS: We conducted a single-center cross-sectional online survey (REDCap) of caregivers of children aged 5-17 years with neurodevelopmental or behavioral

Application of the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills Model of Medication-Taking Behavior in People With Diabetes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to examine a hypothetical model of medication-taking behavior in individuals with type 2 diabetes based on the information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model and to investigate pathways depending on the presence of depressive symptoms. METHODS: This study employed a theory-driven, cross-sectional correlational design and used path analysis to examine the hypothesized relationships. Participants comprised 325 adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus who attended a university-affiliated hospital in South Korea. Structured questionnaires were used to measu

Behavioral and psychosocial correlates of awake bruxism behaviors in esports athletes: a cross-sectional study.

Awake bruxism (AB) has been little explored in esports. This study estimated the frequency of self-reported AB behaviors, described behavioral features, and identified associated factors in esports practitioners. In this cross-sectional study, 447 esports players from São Paulo, Brazil, completed self-report questionnaires using items derived from the BruxScreen protocol and the Standardized Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism (STAB). AB behaviors were assessed using a frequency-based approach, and participants were stratified into low- and high-frequency groups. Overall, 35% met the criterion
