Developmental trajectories of EEG aperiodic and periodic components in children 2-44 months of age.

The development of neural circuits has long-lasting effects on brain function, yet our understanding of early circuit development in humans remains limited. Here, periodic EEG power features and aperiodic components were examined from longitudinal EEGs collected from 592 healthy 2-44 month-old infants, revealing age-dependent nonlinear changes suggestive of distinct milestones in early brain maturation. Developmental changes in periodic peaks include (1) the presence and then absence of a 9-10 Hz alpha peak between 2-6 months, (2) nonlinear changes in high beta peaks (20-30 Hz) between 4-18 mo

[EEG frequency and regional properties in patients with paranoid schizophrenia: effects of positive and negative symptomatology prevalence].

OBJECTIVE: EEG changes in schizophrenic patients are caused by a multitude of factors related to clinical heterogeneity of the disease, current state of patients, and conducted therapy. EEG spectral analysis remains an actual methodical approach for the investigation of the neurophysiological mechanisms of the disease. The goal of the investigation was the study of frequency and regional EEG correlating with the intensity of productive and negative disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Models of summary prevalence of positive/negative disorders and evidence of concrete clinical indices of the PANS

EEG spectra in dyslexic and normal readers during oral and silent reading.

EEGs of extensively screened dyslexics and normal readers were recorded while they read easy and difficult texts silently and orally, and during two other verbal tasks which also differed in overt speaking but had no reading component: narrative speaking and listening to a story. Mid-temporal, central and parietal leads were referenced to linked ears and to Cz. Large differences between tasks and between groups were found. With the linked ears reference, power was higher in all bands in oral reading than in silent reading, with the largest change occurring in the temporal leads. In the theta a

Voluntary wheel running exercise improves sleep disorder, circadian rhythm disturbance, and neuropathology in an animal model of Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The sleep-wake cycle and circadian rhythm disturbances are common in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, it is not known if exercise has any benefit for the sleep disorders in AD. METHODS: We conducted a 2-month voluntary wheel running (VWR) exercise (Ex) in an animal model of AD (APPSWE/PS1dE9 mice). We assessed behavioral circadian rhythm, sleep structure, circadian clock genes, cognitive function, and neurodegeneration in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the hippocampus, and the cortex. RESULTS: After VWR exercise in the AD mice, the rapid eye movement sleep was increased b

Beta bursts in SMA mediate anticipatory muscle inhibition.

In motor networks, inhibition has been associated with oscillatory activity in the mu (8 to 12 Hz) or beta (13 to 30 Hz) bands, yet how these rhythms ultimately influence muscle activity remains unclear. The bimanual load-lifting task (BLLT) elicits anticipatory inhibition of the elbow flexors in the load-supporting arm during voluntary load-lifting, providing a suitable model to study oscillatory mechanisms of muscle inhibition. We recorded magnetoencephalography in adult participants performing the BLLT. Optimal postural stabilization occurred when biceps brachii inhibition preceded unloadin

Dofetilide: a class III anti-arrhythmic drug for the treatment of atrial fibrillation.

Dofetilide is a class III anti-arrhythmic drug that has been approved for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Two clinical studies, which enrolled 996 patients, demonstrated pharmacological conversion to sinus rhythm to occur in 30% of patients. Following pharmacological or electrical conversion, median time to relapse exceeded one year. Two large clinical studies that enrolled 3028 patients have been performed in high-risk patients with severe heart failure and large myocardial infarctions. The outcomes of these studies were neutral with respect to survival and demonstrated the safety of do

Verapamil in the treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.

Verapamil is a novel antiarrhythmic agent which appears to act as a calcium-ion antagonist, blocking calcium transport across the myocardial cell membrane. It was given intravenously, in a dose of 10 mg, to thirty-two patients suffering from paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, and sinus rhythm was achieved promptly in all. Identical results were obtained in a further ten patients with supraventricular tachycardias associated with the Wolff-Parkinson-White or other pre-excitation syndromes. In a separate group of eighteen patients in whom A-V junctional tachycardias were induced during int

Supraventricular tachycardia: An overview of diagnosis and management.

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a common cause of hospital admissions and can cause significant patient discomfort and distress. The most common SVTs include atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia, atrioventricular re-entrant tachycardia and atrial tachycardia. In many cases, the underlying mechanism can be deduced from electrocardiography during tachycardia, comparing it with sinus rhythm, and assessing the onset and offset of tachycardia. Recent European Society of Cardiology guidelines continue to advocate the use of vagal manoeuvres and adenosine as first-line therapies in the

Can flecainide totally eliminate bidirectional ventricular tachycardia in pediatric patients with Andersen-Tawil syndrome?

Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) is a disorder that causes episodes of muscle weakness (periodic paralysis), changes in heart rhythm, and developmental abnormalities. QT prolongation and ventricular arrhythmias, including bidirectional ventricular tachycardia (VT) and polymorphic VT, may occur. About 60% of all cases of the disorder arecaused by mutations in the KCNJ2 gene. A 13-year-old female patient was referred for frequent premature ventricular contractions. Suspicion of ATS due to dysmorphic findings, electrocardiogram changes, and periodic muscle weakness was genetically confirmed. Beta-bl

The response to isoproterenol of synaptic ribbon numbers in the rat pineal gland changes during postnatal development.

In the mammalian pineal gland synaptic ribbons (SRs) are dynamic organelles of pinealocytes undergoing a day/night rhythm, with small numbers during daytime and significantly higher numbers at night, similar to the formation of the pineal hormone melatonin. Whereas the day/night rhythm of melatonin synthesis is adrenergically regulated, data on the adrenergic regulation of SR numbers in the rat pineal gland are at variance. While some authors have demonstrated that isoproterenol (ISO) stimulates SR numbers, others could not find any effect. To clarify the issue, we carried out identical experi

What If We Let It Fibrillate? New Perspective on Atrial Fibrillation in Sepsis.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a frequent arrhythmia in sepsis patients and is traditionally regarded as a harmful epiphenomenon requiring immediate correction. Its abrupt onset and association with adverse outcomes have driven clinicians to pursue aggressive rhythm or rate control strategies, which are often extrapolated from cardiology rather than sepsis-specific evidence. However, emerging data challenge this reflexive approach. Studies with ultrashort-acting beta-blockers, such as esmolol and landiolol, have shown that hemodynamic stabilization may occur even in the absence of sinus rhythm re

Sleep deprivation and Modafinil affect cortical sources of resting state electroencephalographic rhythms in healthy young adults.

OBJECTIVE: It has been reported that sleep deprivation affects the neurophysiological mechanisms underpinning the vigilance. Here, we tested the following hypotheses in the PharmaCog project (www.pharmacog.org): (i) sleep deprivation may alter posterior cortical delta and alpha sources of resting state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms in healthy young adults; (ii) after the sleep deprivation, a vigilance enhancer may recover those rsEEG source markers. METHODS: rsEEG data were recorded in 36 healthy young adults before (Pre-sleep deprivation) and after (Post-sleep deprivati

From Traditional Tasks to Hyperscanning: Exploratory Evidence for Selective Modulation of Sensorimotor Neurodynamics Using Time-Resolved Generalized Additive Model Analysis.

Sensorimotor rhythms in the mu (8-13 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) frequency ranges provide a canonical window into action-related neural dynamics. While these rhythms are known to reflect movement preparation, execution, and postmovement regulation, less is known about how their temporal organization varies across increasingly ecological interactional contexts. Here, we used a four-tier scalable experimental design (SED) based on the rock-paper-scissors (RPS) game to examine sensorimotor event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) across contexts ranging from individual computer-based

Efficacy and safety of intravenous beta-blockers in acute atrial fibrillation and flutter is dependent on beta-1 selectivity: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous beta-blockers are commonly used to manage patients with acute atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial flutter (AFl), but the choice of specific agent is often not evidence-based. METHODS: A prospectively-registered systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials (PROSPERO: CRD42020204772) to compare the safety and efficacy of intravenous beta-blockers against alternative pharmacological agents. RESULTS: Twelve trials comparing beta-blockers with diltiazem, digoxin, verapamil, anti-arrhythmic drugs and placebo were included, with variable risk of bias and 1152 par

Using EEG and MEG to characterize extreme delta brush in a patient with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Extreme delta brush (EDB) is considered a potential marker for anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis. The brain regions involved in EDB are unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old woman with anti-NMDAR encephalitis who was experiencing psychosis was admitted. Electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) were used to analyze EDB in the patient. EDB on EEG could be disturbed by opening and closing the eyes, by occipital alpha rhythms and by sleep-wake cycles. The MEG results showed beta activity originating from bilateral superior parietal l

Electroencephalographic correlates of near-drowning encephalopathy in children.

Findings of the serial EEGs of 9 children involved in fresh water near-drowning were correlated with neurological signs and final outcome. Our observations revealed that in young near-drowning victims there is a distinct evolution of the EEG which differs considerably from any stereotyped classification outlined for other types of encephalopathies. In patients with a poor clinical outcome, the early phase of near-drowning encephalopathy was characterized electrically by diffuse delta waves, often with alpha or beta frequencies superimposed (alpha-delta and beta-delta pattern). Additional featu

Horticultural activity in soil inoculated with Streptomyces rimosus improved depressive mood with altered electroencephalogram and serum metabolism in adults.

This study investigated the psychophysiological and metabolomic changes during horticultural activities involving the inhalation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in individuals experiencing depressive mood based on the presence or absence of the soil microbe Streptomyces rimosus, which emits VOCs. Thirty participants met the specific depression and anxiety criteria and engaged in horticultural activities using soil inoculated with S. rimosus (experimental group) or medium (control group). Electroencephalogram (EEG) was used to analyze the resulting psychophysiological response, and blood s

Regional Brain Correlates of Beta Bursts in Health and Psychosis: A Concurrent Electroencephalography and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

BACKGROUND: There is emerging evidence for abnormal beta oscillations in psychosis. Beta oscillations are likely to play a key role in the coordination of sensorimotor information that is crucial to healthy mental function. Growing evidence suggests that beta oscillations typically manifest as transient beta bursts that increase in probability following a motor response, observable as post-movement beta rebound. Evidence indicates that post-movement beta rebound is attenuated in psychosis, with greater attenuation associated with greater symptom severity and impairment. Delineating the functio

Gonadal hormones organize and modulate the circadian system of the rat.

The circadian wheel-running rhythms of gonadectomized adult male, female, and perinatally androgenized female rats, maintained in constant darkness, were examined before and after implantation of Silastic capsules containing cholesterol (C) or estradiol-17 beta (E). The free-running period of the activity rhythm (tau) before capsule implantation tended to be shorter in animals exposed to perinatal androgen. Administration of C did not reliably alter tau in any group. E significantly shortened tau in 100% of females injected with oil on day 3 of life. In females, injected with 3.5 micrograms te

Atrial fibrillation post hematopoietic stem cell transplant: incidence, risk factors, and management challenges.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent cardiovascular complication after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and is linked to higher short-term and long-term morbidity and mortality. AF occurring within 30 days post-HSCT reflects an interplay of peri-transplant triggers, conditioning-related myocardial injury, systemic inflammation and infection, rapid fluid shifts with atrial stretch, and electrolyte disturbances. Beyond 30 days, AF is driven by chronic inflammation and graft-vs.-host disease, metabolic dysregulation from immunosuppression, and cumulative cardiotoxic cancer
