Microbial-derived natural bionematicides in sustainable agriculture: Advances in biological control of Phytonematodes.

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are major hidden constraints in agriculture, causing significant yield losses across diverse cropping systems. Important genera such as Meloidogyne, Heterodera, Pratylenchus, and Rotylenchus exhibit complex host-parasite interactions that make their management challenging. Although chemical nematicides provide rapid control, their environment persistence, toxicity to non-target organisms, and increasing regulatory restrictions limit their long-term use. Building on this, microbial-based bionematicides have emerged as sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. B

Wheat-associated Antagonistic Bacteria Exerts Biocontrol Activity Against Fungal Growth and Deoxynivalenol Production in Fusarium Graminearum.

Fusarium head blight (FHB), primarily caused by Fusarium graminearum, leads to severe contamination of wheat grains with the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON), posing a significant threat to grain safety and quality. While chemical control remains common, its efficacy is increasingly challenged by fungicide resistance and potential stimulation of DON production. Biological control represents a promising alternative, yet the identification of effective antagonistic agents and elucidation of their mechanisms are still needed. This study evaluated the biocontrol potential of the endophytic bacterium

Chitosan obtained from black soldier fly larval cuticles expands the value chain and is effective as a biocontrol agent to combat plant pathogens.

The industrial use of certain insects, such as the black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens), has become a burgeoning way of converting residual biomass into a valuable source of biomolecules for the feed and food industry. Here, the integration of a valuable step as an upcycling technology using biological waste from the 5th instar BSF larvae processing as a source of bioactive chitosan was explored. The goal is to pave the way for sustainable chitosan production from insect-based resources in addition to proteins, lipids, and fertilizers. The macronutrient profile of the larval waste was ev

Infection model for analyzing biological control of coffee rust using bacterial anti-fungal compounds.

Coffee rust is one of the main diseases that affect coffee plantations worldwide (Cressey, 2013 [10]). This causes an important economic impact in the coffee production industry in countries where coffee is an important part of the economy. A common method for combating this disease is using copper hydroxide as a fungicide, which can have damaging effects both on the coffee tree and on human health (Haddad et al., 2013 [13]). A novel method for biological control of coffee rust using bacteria has been proven to be an effective alternative to copper hydroxide fungicides as anti-fungal compounds

Fungal Metabolite Antagonists of Plant Pests and Human Pathogens: Structure-Activity Relationship Studies.

Fungi are able to produce many bioactive secondary metabolites that belong to different classes of natural compounds. Some of these compounds have been selected for their antagonism against pests and human pathogens and structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies have been performed to better understand which structural features are essential for the biological activity. In some cases, these studies allowed for the obtaining of hemisynthetic derivatives with increased selectivity and stability in respect to the natural products as well as reduced toxicity in view of their potential practical

Indirect comparisons of the efficacy of biological agents in patients with active ankylosing spondylitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Patients with ankylosing (AS) often do not have a satisfactory response to, or could not tolerate, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Several biologic agents are available for such patients. However, the comparative efficacy of these treatments remains unknown as head-to-head randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are not available. RCTs examining the efficacy of biologic agents in patients with AS who had inadequate response to, or could not tolerate, NSAIDs were identified. If at least two RCTs were available for a given biologic agent, the pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence

The prophylaxis and treatment of anthrax.

Bacillus anthracis infection can occur in three forms: cutaneous, gastrointestinal and inhalation depending on the mode of infection. Anthrax is a zoonotic disease but the inhalation form can also be used as a biological warfare agent. The recent mail spread outbreak of bioterrorism-related infections in the USA prompted the introduction of specific guidelines by the USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Postexposure prophylaxis is indicated to prevent inhalational anthrax, and therapy with ciprofloxacin or doxycycline is recommended for adults and children for 60 days. The same agen

Eosinophilia Induced by Blocking the IL-4/IL-13 Pathway: Potential Mechanisms and Clinical Outcomes.

Five biological drugs are currently marketed for treatment of uncontrolled severe asthma. They all block type 2 inflammatory pathways by targeting IgE (omalizumab), the IL-5 pathway (mepolizumab, reslizumab, benralizumab), or the IL-4/IL-13 pathway (dupilumab). Hypereosinophilia has been observed in 4%-25% of patients treated with dupilumab and is transient in most cases, although there have been reports of persistent cases of symptomatic hypereosinophilia consistent with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), eosinophilic pneumonia, eosinophilic vasculitis, and sudden worsening

Biological cognition as viability-constrained expansion of controllable futures.

Biological cognition is often described through homeostasis, prediction, exploration, or control. However, none of these principles alone specifies how a living system should act while preserving viability and enlarging its future possibilities. We tested whether living-cognition-like policy selection can be operationalized as viability-constrained expansion of controllable futures. A minimal grid-world model was implemented in which agents evaluated finite-horizon policies under internal viability dynamics, hazards, resources, movement costs, and reachable-endpoint controllability. Seven redu
