Creativity and Bipolar Disorder: Igniting a Dialogue.

Bipolar disorder (BD) has been related to heightened creativity, yet core questions remain unaddressed about this association. We used qualitative methods to investigate how highly creative individuals with BD understand the role of symptoms and treatment in their creativity, and possible mechanisms underpinning this link. Twenty-two individuals self-identified as highly creative and living with BD took part in focus groups and completed quantitative measures of symptoms, quality of life (QoL), and creativity. Using thematic analysis, five themes emerged: the pros and cons of mania for creativ

Neurodevelopmental origins of bipolar disorder: iPSC models.

Bipolar disorder (BP) is a chronic neuropsychiatric condition characterized by pathological fluctuations in mood from mania to depression. Adoption, twin and family studies have consistently identified a significant hereditary component to BP, yet there is no clear genetic event or consistent neuropathology. BP has been suggested to have a developmental origin, although this hypothesis has been difficult to test since there are no viable neurons or glial cells to analyze, and research has relied largely on postmortem brain, behavioral and imaging studies, or has examined proxy tissues includin

Pathways to the Diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder.

Awareness of the key signs of bipolar disorder, including episodes of mania or hypomania, early symptom onset, family history, and unpredictable behavior, can help to distinguish bipolar depression from unipolar depression. Primary care providers are ideally situated to identify bipolar disorder, initiate early treatment, encourage sustained treatment, and facilitate psychiatric consultations, to improve the health care and quality of life of these patients.

Rumination in bipolar disorder: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the literature about the symptom of rumination in bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: We searched the MEDLINE (PubMed), ISI Web of Knowledge, PsycINFO, and SciELO databases using the descriptors "rumination" and "bipolar disorder" and no time limits. This strategy yielded 105 references, of which 74 were selected. Inclusion criteria were studies involving patients with BD and the use of at least one validated scale for the assessment of rumination. Review articles were excluded. Seventeen articles were ultimately analyzed and included in the review. R

Olanzapine discontinuation emergent recurrence in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of atypical antipsychotics including olanzapine in acute treatment of manic episode has been established, whereas its role in maintenance treatment is not clear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients of bipolar disorder who were on regular treatment with mood stabilizer and subsequently relapsed into mania or depressive episode after discontinuation of olanzapine were studied for various socio-demographic and clinical factors using retrospective chart review. RESULTS: There was no correlation found between the period of tapering olanzapine, time to recurrence of ep

Cognitive emotion regulation in euthymic bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Based on findings indicating increased stress reactivity and prolonged stress recovery in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), it has been proposed that emotion regulation (ER) deficits lie at the core of this disorder. Recent studies show an increased use of maladaptive ER strategies and a decreased use of adaptive ER strategies in BD. Whether this pattern is merely a correlate of affective episodes or might be a stable characteristic of BD, however, remains to be explored. In addition, it is unclear whether these deficits in ER are specific to people with a history of BD. MET

Cognitive impairment and dementia in bipolar disorder.

In bipolar disorder (BD), impaired cognition has long been described as a psychopathological feature of abnormal mood states, or accepted as treatment related side-effects. More recently, neuropsychological studies conducted in older adults have led to the recognition that enduring, irreversible cognitive changes do occur in substantial proportion of euthymic patients with life-long BD, relevant enough to warrant the diagnosis of dementia. The increased risk for dementia in BD has been associated with older age and also with factors related to the clinical course of the disease. However, it is

Chemokines in bipolar disorder: trait or state?

Recent evidence has suggested that inflammatory and immune mechanisms may play a role in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). Only a few studies have assessed the profile of chemokines, a family of chemotactic cytokines related to the recruitment of leukocytes, in BD. The objective of our study was to evaluate the plasma levels of chemokines in BD patients in different mood states in comparison with healthy controls. Seventy BD type I patients (35 in euthymia and 35 in mania), and 50 healthy controls matched by age, gender, and education level were enrolled in this study. All subjects

[Schizophrenia and/or bipolar disorder: neurobiological endophenotypes].

BACKGROUND: The term endophenotype was used by Gottesman (1991) to describe a trait that may be intermediate on the chain of causality from genes to diseases. Some family relatives of affected patients also carry the endophenotype, although not the disease phenotype. The increased penetrance of the endophenotype, and its closer relationship to the gene than that of the phenotype proper, are expected to help genetic studies. An endophenotype may be neuropathological, neurocognitive, emotional, neurophysiological or neurobiological in nature. OBJECTIVE: We aim at identifying neurobiological end

Is bipolar disorder specifically associated with aggression?

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have suggested that bipolar disorder (BP) in adults is associated with aggressive behaviors. However, most studies have included only inpatients and have not taken into consideration possible confounding factors. The goal of the present study was to compare the prevalence of aggression in subjects with BP compared to subjects with other, non-BP psychopathology and healthy controls. METHODS: Subjects with bipolar I disorder (BP-I) and bipolar II disorder (BP-II) (n = 255), non-BP psychopathology (n = 85), and healthy controls (n = 84) were recruited. Aggression was m

Circulating levels of GDNF in bipolar disorder.

Neurotrophic factors regulate the survival and growth of neurons, and influence synaptic efficiency and plasticity. Several studies suggest the existence of a relationship between changes in neurotrophic levels and bipolar disorder (BD). The glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) influences monoaminergic neurons and glial cells, but its role in BD patients is controversial. In order to elucidate it we evaluated plasma levels of GDNF in a sample of 70 BD patients (35 in mania and 35 in euthymia) and compared with 50 healthy controls matched for age, gender and educational levels. Varenicline induces manic relapse in bipolar disorder.

Varenicline (Chantix) is commonly used to assist individuals with smoking cessation. This medication is known to affect mood and behavior. We report a patient with bipolar disorder who developed manic relapse after starting treatment with varenicline for tobacco dependence. Further research is necessary to establish the safety of using varenicline in individuals who have significant mental illness and want to stop smoking.

Partial rodent genetic models for bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BPD) is a complex clinical phenomenon. This episodic illness comprises at least four features/components: depression, mania, vulnerability to mood swings in euthymic BPD patients, and spontaneous cyclicity in at least some BPD patients. Currently, there is no rodent genetic model capable of encompassing the whole phenotype of BPD exists; however, recent genetic-behavioral studies have delineated partial models for some components of BPD, namely, depression, mania, and vulnerability or resilience to mood swings. p11 knockout (KO), vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) hete

Impulsivity across the course of bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether abnormalities of impulse control persist across the course of bipolar disorder, thereby representing potential state markers and endophenotypes. METHODS: Impulse control of 108 bipolar I manic or mixed patients was measured on three tasks designed to study response inhibition, ability to delay gratification, and attention; namely, a stop signal task, a delayed reward task, and a continuous performance task, respectively. Barrett Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11) scores were also obtained. Patients were then followed for up to one year and reassessed with the same meas

Attributions for hallucinations in bipolar affective disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attributions for hallucinations in the "schizophrenia" spectrum disorders have been subject to extensive investigation; however, in comparison very little is known about attributions for hallucinations in the bipolar disorders spectrum. AIMS: This preliminary study is an attempt to investigate attributions for hallucinations in bipolar disorder with regard to prevalence, modality and mood state. METHOD: Forty participants were recruited from a larger randomized control trial into CBT for bipolar disorder and asked to provide information related to attributions for hallucinations

Personality trait predictors of bipolar disorder symptoms.

The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the personality predictors of bipolar disorder symptoms, conceptualized as one-dimensional (bipolarity) or two-dimensional (mania and depression). A psychiatric sample (N=370; 45% women; mean age 39.50 years) completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory -2. A model in which bipolar symptoms were represented as a single dimension provided a good fit to the data. This dimension was predicted by Neuroticism and (negative) Agreeableness. A model in which bipolar symptoms were represented

Hippocampal function in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus plays a central role in memory formation. There is considerable evidence of abnormalities in hippocampal structure and function in schizophrenia, which may differentiate it from bipolar disorder. However, no previous studies have compared hippocampal activation in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder directly. METHOD: Fifteen patients with schizophrenia, 14 patients with bipolar disorder and 14 healthy comparison subjects took part in the study. Subjects performed a face-name pair memory task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Differences in blood o

Omega-3 fatty acids for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is a complex psychiatric disorder and is amongst the top thirty causes of worldwide disability. Mood stabilisers are the primary pharmacological intervention, both in the treatment of acute episodes and in prophylaxis. There is, however, mounting evidence that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids may be beneficial in psychiatric conditions, particularly those involving disturbances of mood. OBJECTIVES: To review the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids as either a monotherapy or an adjunctive treatment for bipolar disorder. SEARCH STRATEGY: Electronic sear
