Information processing bottlenecks in macaque posterior parietal cortex: an attentional blink?

When two brief stimuli are presented in rapid succession, our ability to attend and recognize the second stimulus is impaired if our attentional resources are devoted to processing the first. Such inability (termed the "attentional blink" in human studies) arises around 200-500 ms following the onset of the first stimulus. We trained two monkeys on a delayed-match-to-sample task where both the location and orientation of two successively presented grating patches had to be matched. When the delay between the two gratings was varied, monkey's behavioral performance (d') was affected in a way th

Blink reflexes in chronic tension-type headache patients and healthy controls.

OBJECTIVE: To use the R2 component of nociceptive-specific blink reflex (nBR) to probe the trigeminal nociceptive system and compare chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) patients and healthy controls. METHODS: Thirty patients with CTTH and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects were included. nBR were evoked by painful electrical pulses (0.5ms duration), delivered by a concentric electrode placed on the left lower forehead close to the supraorbital foramen. The EMG activity in the orbicularis oculi muscles was recorded bilaterally. The electrical stimulus intensities to evoke indivi

Cardiac modulation of startle: effects on eye blink and higher cognitive processing.

Cardiac cycle time has been shown to affect pre-attentive brainstem startle processes, such as the magnitude of acoustically evoked reflexive startle eye blinks. These effects were attributed to baro-afferent feedback mechanisms. However, it remains unclear whether cardiac cycle time plays a role in higher startle-related cognitive processes, as well. Twenty-five volunteers responded first by 'fast as possible' button pushes (reaction time, RT), and second, rated perceived intensity of 60 acoustic startle stimuli (85, 95, or 105 dB; 50 ms duration; binaural; instantaneous rise time), which wer

Nociceptive blink reflex and visual evoked potential habituations are correlated in migraine.

BACKGROUND: Lack of habituation, as reported in migraine patients between attacks for evoked cortical responses, was also recently found for the nociceptive blink reflex (nBR) mediated by brainstem neurons. It is not known if both brain stem and cortical habituation deficits are correlated in the same patient, which would favor a common underlying mechanism. OBJECTIVE: To search for intraindividual correlations between habituation of pattern reversal-visual evoked potentials and that of the nociception-specific blink reflex in migraineurs and in healthy volunteers (HV). METHODS: We recorded

The roles of blink reflex and sympathetic skin response in multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

The neurological history and examination are important in multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis, but early and accurate diagnosis of MS often requires judicious use of paraclinical information. Electrophysiologic techniques have an important role in demonstrating lesions that are clincally silent but magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is accepted as the most sensitive paraclincal test for detecting asymptomatic dissemination in space for MS patients. In order to test the sensitivity of electrophysiologic techniques in diagnosing asymptomatic MS lesions, we performed blink reflex (BR) and sympathetic

[The blink reflex in the electrophysiologic exploration of Bell's palsy and its prognostic value].

Conventional electrophysiology of the facial nerve gives only information about the functional condition of its extracranial segment. The blink-reflex triggered for the electric stimulation of supraorbital nerve allows the study of the whole nerve path, even the intraosteal, where the great majority of its pathology settles. We have realized this tests in 43 Bell's palsy cases (at the beginning of the paralysis and three weeks later) and correlated the results with the clinic course, in order to set up the pronostic value of the procedure. The cases with shorter tendency of blink reflex along

Blink reflex recovery in facial weakness: an electrophysiologic study of adaptive changes.

OBJECTIVE: To study the electrophysiologic effects of unilateral facial weakness on the excitability of the neuronal circuitry underlying blink reflex, and to localize the site of changes in blink reflex excitability that occur after facial weakness. BACKGROUND: Eyelid kinematic studies suggest that adaptive modification of the blink reflex occurs after facial weakness. Such adaptations generally optimize eye closure. A report of blepharospasm following Bell's palsy suggests that dysfunctional adaptive changes can also occur. METHODS: Blink reflex recovery was evaluated with paired stimulati

Blink reflex excitability is abnormal in patients with periodic leg movements in sleep.

The excitability of the late component of the blink reflex was measured in 19 patients with periodic leg movements in sleep (PLMS) and in 18 control patients with other sleep complaints. PLMS patients were not different from controls regarding age, body mass index, and apneas and hypopneas per hour of sleep. The latencies of the R1 and R2 components of the blink reflex were not different between the groups. However, in PLMS, the excitability of the R2 response was markedly enhanced: The second R2 response to a pair of stimuli given at an interval of 500 ms was in PLMS 59.5% (range 21-87%) of t

Blink reflex recovery curves in blepharospasm, torticollis spasmodica, and hemifacial spasm.

R1 and R2 blink reflex responses to single and paired stimuli were investigated in 23 control subjects, 21 patients with blepharospasm (BSP), 20 patients with torticollis spasmodica (TS), and 23 with hemifacial spasm (HFS). For paired stimuli, we compared measurements of area and peak responses at two and three times R2 threshold. R1 and R2 indices were calculated as the average of the recovery values at 0.5-, 0.3-, and 0.21-s interstimulus intervals to test individual patients. Peak amplitude measurements at three times R2 threshold were optimal. The R2 index was abnormal in 67% of BSP patien

Electromyography and recovery of the blink reflex in involuntary eyelid closure: a comparative study.

Electromyographic (EMG) activity of orbicularis oculi and levator palpebrae muscles was recorded to study the origin of involuntary eyelid closure in 33 patients. The evoked blink reflex in all patients and in 23 controls was also studied. To examine the excitability of facial motoneurons and bulbar interneurons in individual patients and to compare the results with EMG findings, R1 and R2 recovery indices were calculated in all subjects, as the average of recovery values at 0.5, 0.3, and 0.21 second interstimulus intervals. Based on EMG patterns, the patients were divided into three subclasse

Blink reflex in patients with an ischaemic lesion of the brain-stem verified by MRI.

The electrically elicited blink reflex was investigated in 25 patients with ischaemic lesions of the pons or the medulla oblongata. Only patients with a lesion on MRI appropriate to the clinical syndrome were included. Twenty patients had an infarction of the pons, bilateral in 5. Additional 5 patients had an infarction of the dorsolateral medulla oblongata. Patients with hemispheric lesions were excluded. Four of the 5 patients with Wallenberg's syndrome showed delayed R2 components to stimulation ipsilateral to the lesion. Additional loss of the ipsilateral R1 component was observed in 1 pat

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials and blink reflex in Friedreich's ataxia.

The brain-stem involvement in Friedreich's ataxia (FA) was studied by using brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and the blink reflex. Ten out of 18 patients had abnormal BAEPs, the main abnormality being complete absence of responses and disappearance of wave V. Combined degeneration of the peripheral and central acoustic pathways probably accounts for these findings. The blink reflex was abnormal in 50% of the cases. The outstanding abnormality was bilateral delay of late responses with normal early response, which could be correlated with the known pallor of the descending trigemin

[Electrophysiological analysis of the blink reflex during hemiplegia due to hemispheric lesions].

Electrical stimulation of the supra-orbital nerve induces at the same threshold an early reflex reaction in the ipsilateral orbicular muscle and a delayed bilateral reflex response. These reflex activities are modified bilaterally by unilateral hemispheric lesions. Reactions on the hemiplegic side are reduced in amplitude, unlike the responses on the "healthy side" which are facilitated. Adaptation of the reflexogenous threshold of the delayed responses to repeated stimulation is also irregular; cumulative depression occurs earlier on the hemiplegic side, the responses on the "healthy side", o

Audiovisual attentional blink in restrained eaters: Modulation by sound and DLPFC tDCS.

Although auditory stimuli can enhance target perception and attentional shifting during attentional blink (AB), the effect on restrained eaters facing food and the role of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in this process remain unclear. Experiment 1 used food as the first target (T1) and presented auditory tones synchronized with the second target (T2) to explore sound's effect on AB in restrained eaters with food attentional bias. Results showed auditory tones improved AB, but successful restrained eaters (SRE) still had stronger AB than failed restrained eaters (FRE). This may be due t

Blinks are strategically coupled with head movements in unconstrained natural gaze behavior.

Blinks are a ubiquitous yet largely unnoticed aspect of human vision, despite causing frequent interruptions of visual input that can amount to up to 10% of waking time. By leveraging a large dataset of unconstrained gaze behavior during two natural tasks, we found a novel behavioral strategy to limit the impact of blinks: blinks were strategically coupled with head movements, which minimizes information loss due to unreliable visual input during head movements. Specifically, blink probability increased with higher head velocities and showed strong temporal modulation relative to head movement

Association between blink-related anterior segment dynamics and intraocular pressure.

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is a key parameter for diagnosing and managing glaucoma. This study introduces a novel, non-contact method for evaluating blink-induced anterior segment dynamics, as observed through corneal profile motion during natural blinking, demonstrating its dependence on IOP. The eyelid deforms the corneal surface during a blink, resulting in a rebound response. A high-speed lateral imaging system tracked corneal profile motion in healthy volunteers during the eye-opening phase. Changes in anterior segment dynamics were analyzed at baseline and after the Valsalva maneuver to

Blink-related arousal network surges are shaped by cortical vigilance states.

The vigilance state and the excitability of cortical networks impose wide-range effects on brain dynamics that arousal surges could promptly modify. We previously reported an association between spontaneous eye-blinks and BOLD activation in the brain arousal ascending network (AAN) and in thalamic nuclei based on 3T MR resting state brain images. Here we aimed to replicate our analyses using 7T MR images in a larger cohort of participants collected from the Human Connectome Project (HCP), which also contained simultaneous eye-tracking recordings, and to assess the interaction between the blink

The Contribution of TRPA1 to Corneal Thermosensitivity and Blink Regulation in Young and Aged Mice.

The role of TRPA1 in the thermosensitivity of the corneal cold thermoreceptor nerve endings was studied in young and aged mice. The contribution of the TRPA1-dependent activity to basal tearing and thermally-evoked blink was also explored. The corneal cold thermoreceptors' activity was recorded extracellularly in young (5-month-old) and aged (18-month-old) C57BL/6WT (WT) and TRPA1-/- knockout (TRPA1-KO) mice at basal temperature (34 °C) and during cooling (15 °C) and heating (45 °C) ramps. Hand-blink reflex modulation: The role of primary emotions and attachment dimensions.

The hand-blink reflex (HBR) is a subcortical response elicited by the electrical stimulation of the median nerve. HBR magnitude is enhanced when the stimulated hand is close to the face and is modulated by high-level structures according to the perceived threat magnitude. Psychological factors may contribute to threat evaluation and possibly to HBR amplitude modulation. In this study, we assessed distinctively emotional and relational aspects of personality and evaluated their associations with the HBR response, or lack thereof, in healthy subjects. Seventy-one volunteers filled the Experience
