Changes in Seasonal Patterns of Pediatric Respiratory Viral Infections Before, During, and After the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Seventeen-Year Surveillance Study in the Republic of Korea.

The coronavirus disease 19 pandemic disrupted pediatric respiratory infections through non-pharmaceutical interventions and altered contact patterns. Long-term comparisons across the pandemic timeline in children remain limited. In this study, we analyzed 15,657 respiratory specimens from patients ≤ 18 years at Dankook University Hospital (2007-2023) using multiplex polymerase chain reaction assays targeting 15 viruses. Age-stratified positivity rates were compared across pandemic phases. Children ≤ 6 years comprised 88.61% of the study population. Human rhinovirus showed the highest detection

Nasopharyngeal metagenomics of symptomatic healthcare workers provides insights into the respiratory microbiome and antimicrobial resistance.

Respiratory infections represent a significant risk for healthcare workers (HCWs), particularly during viral outbreaks. This study applied metagenomic sequencing to characterize microbial communities and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in nasopharyngeal swabs from HCWs presenting respiratory symptoms. Samples from 161 HCWs collected at a tertiary hospital in 2020-2021 were screened using FilmArray; negative samples were analyzed by metagenomic sequencing. After removal of human reads, sequences were taxonomically classified into viral, bacterial, and eukaryotic groups, and AMR genes were

Non-Influenza and Non-SARS-CoV-2 Viruses Among Patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Infections in Tanzania: A Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Snapshot.

Respiratory pathogens are significant causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in 2019 and the mitigation measures implemented to control the pandemic, other respiratory viruses' transmission and circulation patterns were substantially disrupted. We leveraged the influenza hospitalization surveillance in Tanzania to understand the distribution of respiratory viruses shortly after nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were lifted. A total of 475 samples that tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza from March through May 2022 were included in this stud

Are any specific respiratory viruses more severe than others in recipients of allogeneic stem cell transplantation? A focus on lower respiratory tract disease.

In the general population, influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and SARS-CoV-2 are considered the most severe community-acquired respiratory viruses (CARVs). However, allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) recipients may also face severe courses from other CARVs. This retrospective study compared outcomes of various CARV lower respiratory tract diseases (LRTD) in 235 adult allo-SCT recipients, excluding co-infection episodes. We included 235 adults allo-SCT recipients experiencing 353 CARV LRTD consecutive episodes (130 rhinovirus, 63 respiratory syncytial virus, 43 influenza, 43

Human virome in nasopharynx and tracheal secretion samples.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil the implementation of the Sentinel Surveillance System of Influenza began in 2000. Central public health laboratories use reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) for diagnosis of respiratory viruses, but this protocol identifies only specific targets, resulted in inconclusive diagnosis for many samples. Thus, high-throughput sequencing (HTS) would be complementary method in the identification of pathogens in inconclusive samples for RT-qPCR or other specific detection protocols. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to detect unidentified viruses us

Differential Interactions of Tissue-Restricted Host Proteins SPLUNC1 and VAMP8 with VP3 of Human Bocaviruses 1 and 2.

Background: Four genotypes of human bocaviruses (HBoVs) have been identified, with only HBoV1 being detected in respiratory specimens, and with HBoV2 being the predominant human bocavirus in fecal specimens, which implies different tissue tropisms for HBoV1 and HBoV2. It is vital to determine the factors that influence the tissue tropisms. Methods: The major capsid proteins VP3 of HBoV1 and HBoV2 were expressed in eukaryotic cells. Then co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) (IP-MS) was employed, along with Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Ency

Identification and interspecies transmission of a novel bocaparvovirus among different bat species in China.

We report the discovery of a novel bocaparvovirus, bat bocaparvovirus (BtBoV), in one spleen, four respiratory and 61 alimentary samples from bats of six different species belonging to three families, Hipposideridae, Rhinolophidae and Vespertilionidae. BtBoV showed a higher detection rate in alimentary samples of Rhinolophus sinicus (5.7 %) than those of other bat species (0.43-1.59 %), supporting R. sinicus as the primary reservoir and virus spillover to accidental bat species. BtBoV peaked during the lactating season of R. sinicus, and it was more frequently detected among female than male a
