The aetiology of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is poorly understood. Recent evidence from functional brain imaging studies suggests that BDD is associated with aberrant task-based functional connectivity and that intranasal oxytocin (OXT) may improve network connectivity in BDD patients. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of intranasal OXT on amygdala resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in BDD. In a randomized, double-blind, cross-over design, 19 BDD participants and 17 demographically matched healthy control participants received intranasal OXT (24 IU) or plac

Rituals, such as gazing at faces, are common in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and appear in cognitive-behavioral models as a maintaining factor. Rituals are also common in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In contrast to OCD, the proposed associations between rituals and intrusive thoughts/appearance preoccupation have not been empirically investigated for BDD. We examined if the assumed effect of gazing rituals on attractiveness ratings exists and if it is associated with dissociation. In an experiment, we asked N = 65 non-clinical females to focus on the nose of a photographed face at pr

Men with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) may be preoccupied with the size or shape of the penis, which may be causing significant shame or impairment. Little is known about the characteristics and phenomenology of such men and whether they can be differentiated from men with small penis anxiety (SPA) (who do not have BDD), and men with no penile concerns. Twenty-six men with BDD, 31 men with SPA, and 33 men without penile concerns were compared on psychopathology, experiences of recurrent imagery, avoidance and safety-seeking behaviours. Men with BDD had significantly higher scores than both th

BACKGROUND: Smartphone-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is becoming more common, but research on the topic remains in its infancy. Little is known about how people typically engage with smartphone CBT or which engagement and mobility patterns may optimize treatment. Passive smartphone data offer a unique opportunity to gain insight into these knowledge gaps.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine passive smartphone data across a pilot course of smartphone CBT for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a psychiatric illness characterized by a preoccupation with a perceived defect in physi

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the sexual functioning and behavior of men anxious about the size of their penis and the means that they might use to try to alter the size of their penis.
AIM: To compare sexual functioning and behavior in men with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) concerning penis size and in men with small penis anxiety (SPA without BDD) and in a control group of men who do not have any concerns.
METHODS: An opportunistic sample of 90 men from the community were recruited and divided into three groups: BDD (n = 26); SPA (n = 31) and controls (n = 33).

INTRODUCTION: Although the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale Modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD-YBOCS) is a complete questionnaire for evaluating BDD, there are few studies in the literature to investigate or screen for dysmorphism in patients undergoing facial plastic surgery.
OBJECTIVE: To map and evaluate facial plastic studies that used this questionnaire to research body dysmorphism in their populations. The secondary objectives were to review the criteria and questions assessed by the questionnaire and their applicability.
METHODS: The study selection criteria involved stud

OBJECTIVES: Therapist-guided internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) is an efficacious treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), but it is unclear if the results obtained in controlled trials can be reproduced in clinical settings. We evaluated the implementation of ICBT for OCD (OCD-NET) and BDD (BDD-NET) in the Swedish public health system.
METHODS: Consecutive referrals to an outpatient psychiatric clinic providing ICBT, with a primary diagnosis of OCD or BDD, were included in the study. Four hundred and thirty-four participants sta

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid, which may be influenced by cultural variables associated with individualism vs. collectivism with particular emphasis on shame. This study investigated the network structures comprising symptoms of SAD, BDD, MDD, and shame across three countries typically associated with either a high tendency of collectivism (Japan), a high tendency of individualism (USA), or in between (Germany). Participants included 319 Japanese, 440 US Americans, and 308 Germans from the general populati

OBJECTIVE: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder that may be negatively associated with the self-image. It might be associated with orthodontic treatment demand and outcome, and therefore is important. Thus, this study was conducted.
METHODS: The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD-YBOCS) questionnaire was used in 699 orthodontic patients above 12 years of age (222 males, 477 females), at seven clinics in two cities (2020-2021). BDD diagnosis and severity were calculated based on the first 3 items and all 12 item

OBJECTIVES: Most patients with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) do not receive evidence-based treatment. A randomised controlled trial (RCT) has found that a therapist-guided internet-based cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) programme for BDD (BDD-NET) can be delivered safely via the internet with significant improvements in BDD symptom severity in the short term. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if the therapeutic gains of BDD-NET are maintained 2 years after treatment.
SETTING: Academic medical centre.
PARTICIPANTS: A naturalistic 2-year follow-up study of the 88 self-referred adul

We report sustained improvements in thoracic hyperkyphosis, sagittal balance, and health-related quality of life in a 26-year-old male with Scheuermann's disease using Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP®) rehabilitation with a 28-month long-term follow-up. Scheuermann's is associated with significant reductions in quality-of-life outcomes and poor psychosocial outcomes. Body dysmorphic disorders and altered self-perception further deteriorate patient-reported outcomes. Reductions in abnormal spine conditions can reduce the likelihood of disability and chronic conditions. A 26-year-old male with pos

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder that can adversely impact an individual's self-perception. It may influence both the demand for and results of orthodontic treatment, making it a significant concern. Research on BDD among orthodontic patients is scarce, controversial, and methodologically limited. Associations between BDD with IOTN-AC and IOTN-ACE have not been studied at all. Moreover, IOTN-ACE itself (even regardless of BDD) is not studied except in a very few articles.
METHODS: The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale modified

In 1974, Critchley described misoplegia as the phenomenon in which a hemiplegic patient develops a morbid dislike towards the offending immobile limbs. Patients with misoplegia may employ, but more commonly strike their paretic limbs not recognized as self. The pathophysiological mechanism is not well understood. The handful of cases of misoplegia described in the literature, frequently presented a right hemispheric damage. However, patients with chronic spinal cord injury may also present this symptomatology. Not only the modification of behavior by this organic injury, but also the patient r

Muscle dysmorphia (MD) is a psychological disorder defined by preoccupation with one's perceived lack of muscularity and/or leanness, causing significant functional impairment. Studies of individuals with diagnosed MD are rare and no large-scale qualitative studies of the disorder exist. We conducted a qualitative study exploring the lived experiences of 29 individuals with diagnosed MD. Using reflexive thematic analysis, we generated five themes capturing the core features of MD. We identified two distinct phenotypes of MD: a "muscular/lean phenotype" focused on both gaining muscle and remain

Genital dysmorphia, with male preponderance, is commonly used to refer to penile dysmorphia. This dysmorphia, centred on penile size, can be contextualized as a specifier of body dysmorphic disorder with varied levels of insight. It follows that cosmetic surgery for men with genital dysmorphia without prior assessment and specific treatment is unlikely to be helpful.

Body image disturbance is an important feature of Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Some researchers have argued that body image disturbance is not just a symptom of AN, but plays a causal role in the development, persistence, and relapse of AN. Our aim was to systematically review the existing empirical evidence concerning the role of the cognitive-affective, perceptual, and behavioral components of body image disturbance in AN. 46 studies fulfilled eligibility criteria reporting about 4928 participants with AN. There is some evidence suggesting that body image disturbance is related to the course of AN
