Air Ambient-Operated pNIPAM-Based Flexible Actuators Stimulated by Human Body Temperature and Sunlight.

Harnessing a natural power source such as the human body temperature or sunlight should realize ultimate low-power devices. In particular, macroscale and flexible actuators that do not require an artificial power source have tremendous potential. Here we propose and demonstrate electrically powerless polymer-based actuators operated at ambient conditions using a packaging technique in which the stimulating power source is produced by heat from the human body or sunlight. The actuating angle, force, and reliability are discussed as functions of temperature and exposure to sunlight. Furthermore,

Abnormal heart rate and body temperature in mice lacking thyroid hormone receptor alpha 1.

Thyroid hormone, acting through several nuclear hormone receptors, plays important roles in thermogenesis, lipogenesis and maturation of the neonatal brain. The receptor specificity for mediating these effects is largely unknown, and to determine this we developed mice lacking the thyroid hormone receptor TR alpha 1. The mice have an average heart rate 20% lower than that of control animals, both under normal conditions and after thyroid hormone stimulation. Electrocardiograms show that the mice also have prolonged QRS- and QTend-durations. The mice have a body temperature 0.5 degrees C lower

Calculation of mean skin temperature and changes in body heat content during paediatric anaesthesia.

Mean skin temperature and changes in body heat content were calculated in several different ways from measurements made in five children during operation. Mean skin temperatures were calculated from 162 sets of measurements using 15, 12, eight, seven and four skin sites with various formulae modified according to age. The results of other formulae were compared with age-adjusted, area-weighted 15-site mean skin temperature which was used as a reference. Changes in body heat content were calculated from Burton's equation in different ways and errors from different variables in the formula were

Human body temperature and controlled cold exposure during moderate and severe experimental alcohol-intoxication.

In an attempt to obtain more conclusive data, especially concerning the condition in many cases of very high alcohol concentration, two groups of healthy volunteers were exposed to controlled cold surroundings in a climate chamber after i.v. infusion of 96% ethyl alcohol, 1-2 1/2 ml per kg bodyweight, supplemented with alcohol perorally; the maximum blood alcohol concentration measured was 57 mmol/l, corresponding to 2.62%. One group was not habituated to drinking; the other group was habituated to heavy drinking, but functioned well socially. During the stay in a neutral environment, the alco

Elevation of body temperature during exercise enhances protection against dexamethasone‑induced skeletal muscle atrophy.

Prolonged glucocorticoid exposure induces skeletal muscle atrophy through suppression of protein synthesis and activation of catabolic signalling pathways. Although exercise attenuates glucocorticoid-induced muscle loss, whether exercise-induced increases in body temperature contribute remains unclear. In this study, we examined whether exercise in different thermal conditions modulates skeletal muscle atrophy and intracellular signalling during glucocorticoid exposure. Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 48) were assigned to six groups: control (CON), dexamethasone-treated (DEX), cold exercise (∼

An obligatory role for AgRP neurons in maintaining body temperature during time-restricted feeding.

Homeotherms maintain a steady body temperature through thermoregulation, a process critical for survival during fasting, in which the brain has to defend energy-costly body temperature while reducing energy expenditure to conserve energy reserve; however, the neural basis for defending body temperature remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that AgRP neuron lesion led to lethality during time-restricted feeding but no obvious impact on HFD-induced obesity or obesity-reducing responses to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonism. The lesion disrupted adaptive feeding behaviors during time-restr

Some aspects of body thermoregulation, environmental temperature and vascular hypothesis in systemic sclerosis patients.

In line with vascular hypothesis of systemic sclerosis (SSc), it is proposed that visceral Raynaud's phenomenon (RP)/endothelial dysfunction causes severe oxygen supply/consumption imbalance in internal organs, leading to visceral ischemic failure in early SSc, especially with cold environmental temperature (Te) and severe RP. There would also be a decrease in body thermogenesis and a decrease in heat loss caused by chronic visceral ischemia and by systemic vasculopathy, respectively. At any given time, these disorders could produce low core temperature (Tc). Hence, SSc is proposed as a candid

Association between Ultradian Rhythms of Body Temperature in Small Mammals and Earth's Crust Stress.

Association was assessed between the data harvested by a long-baseline laser interference deformograph and the dynamics of body temperature (BT) in hamsters deprived of natural daily light-darkness changes. The power spectral data revealed the positive correlation between simultaneous time series of hamster BT and the Earth's crust deformation (ECD). The superposed epoch analysis established an association between abrupt upstrokes of hamster BT and ECD increments. Thus, the direct relationships between BT dynamics (reflecting predominance of sympathetic part of autonomic nervous system) and EC

Impact of relative lower-limb length on heat loss and body temperature during running.

OBJECTIVES: Long lower limbs relative to body size are thought to be an adaptation to prevent excessive increases in body temperature during running in hot climate. The advantage of long lower limbs relative to body size is usually explained by an increase in body surface area relative to mass; however, the influence of limb length on relative body surface area was shown to be minor. We aimed to experimentally test the effect of relative lower-limb length (LLL) on body temperature changes during running. Furthermore, we tested the effect of relative LLL on relative body surface area. MATERIAL

Voluntary head dunking after exercise-induced hyperthermia rapidly reduces core body temperature in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate field-applicable cooling methods for treatment of exercise-induced hyperthermia in dogs. METHODS: In this randomized, crossover study from June 27, 2023, to July 24, 2023, 12 working dogs exercised for 10 minutes until core body temperature reached 40.6 °C or above or ≥ 2 signs of heat stress were observed. Four different cooling protocols were evaluated: (1) neck chemical ice packs (2), (2) a wet (22 °C) neck towel, (3) wet (22 °C) axillae towels, or (4) voluntary head immersion ("dunking") into (22 °C) water. After intervention, dogs rested and were monitored for 40 m

PEDOT:PSS-Based Wearable Flexible Temperature Sensor and Integrated Sensing Matrix for Human Body Monitoring.

Flexible temperature sensors have been widely used in electronic skins and health monitoring. Body temperature as one of the key physiological signals is crucial for detecting human body's abnormalities, which necessitates high sensitivity, quick responsiveness, and stable monitoring. In this paper, we reported a resistive temperature sensor designed as an ultrathin laminated structure with a serpentine pattern and a bioinspired adhesive layer, which was fabricated with a composite of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate)/single-wall carbon nanotubes/reduced graphene oxide (P

Thoracic Paravertebral Block Decreased Body Temperature in Thoracoscopic Lobectomy Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) may be highly beneficial for thoracoscopic lobectomy patients, but it may increase the risk of hypothermia. Apart from its anesthetic-reducing effects, this randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the hypothermic effect of TPVB, and thus optimize its clinical use. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adult patients were randomly allocated to two groups: TPVB + general anesthesia (GA) group or GA group. In the TPVB+GA group, the block was performed after GA induction by an experienced but unrelated anesthesiologist. Both the lower esophageal and axillary

Flexibility in body temperature rhythms of free-living natal mole-rats (Cryptomys hottentotus natalensis).

The subterranean niche is a specialised and particularly challenging environment to obtain direct physiological and behavioural measurements from free-living animals. Rhythmicity has been examined in many mole-rat species in the laboratory, but field reports are relatively scarce. We implanted Natal mole-rats with temperature loggers in summer and winter to record core body temperature (Tb), before releasing the animals again. Animals were recaptured after two months to recover the loggers. Natal mole-rats can maintain rhythmicity of their Tb in their natural habitat and display seasonal diffe

Body temperature, heart rate and long-term outcome of cooled infants: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic hypothermia is a standard of care for neonatal encephalopathy; however, approximately one in two newborn infants fails to respond to this treatment. Recent studies have suggested potential relationships between body temperature, heart rate and the outcome of cooled infants. METHODS: The clinical data of 756 infants registered to the Baby Cooling Registry of Japan between January 2012 and December 2016 were analysed to assess the relationship between body temperature, heart rate and adverse outcomes (death or severe impairment at 18 months corrected age). RESULTS: A lo

SIRT7 couples light-driven body temperature cues to hepatic circadian phase coherence and gluconeogenesis.

The central pacemaker in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) synchronizes peripheral oscillators to coordinate physiological and behavioural activities throughout the body. How circadian phase coherence between the SCN and the periphery is controlled is not well understood. Here, we identify hepatic SIRT7 as an early responsive element to light that ensures circadian phase coherence in the mouse liver. The SCN-driven body temperature (BT) oscillation induces rhythmic expression of HSP70, which promotes SIRT7 ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. Acute temperature challenge dam

Dogs with macroadenomas have lower body temperature and heart rate than dogs with microadenomas.

Pituitary macroadenomas compress the hypothalamus, which partly regulates heart rate and body temperature. The aim of this study was to investigate whether heart rate and/or body temperature could aid in clinically differentiating dogs with macroadenomas from dogs with microadenomas (i.e. small non-compressive pituitary mass). Two groups of dogs diagnosed with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (i.e. Cushing's disease) were included. Heart rate and body temperature were collected on initial presentation before any procedure. Dogs with macroadenoma had a significantly lower heart rate and

Comparative analysis of virulence factors secreted by Bacillus anthracis Sterne at host body temperature.

AIMS: For the analysis of virulence factors produced and secreted by Bacillus anthracis vegetative cells during mammalian host infection, we evaluated the secretome of B. anthracis Sterne exposed to host-specific factors specifically to host body temperature. METHODS AND RESULTS: We employed a comparative proteomics-based approach to analyse the proteins secreted by B. anthracis Sterne under host-specific body temperature conditions. A total of 17 proteins encoded on a single chromosome and the pXO1 plasmid were identified by peptide mass fingerprinting. Multiple algorithms were used to predi
