Alcohol-induced performance impairment in heavy episodic and light social drinkers.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine performance effects of alcohol in young adult heavy drinkers (HDs) and light drinkers (LDs). Prior research has shown that HDs have alterations in subjective alcohol response in comparison with LDs, with greater reported stimulant-like effects and reduced sedative-like effects. It is unclear whether these quantitative differences extend to performance and objective effects. METHOD: Thirty-four subjects participated (20 HDs and 14 LDs) in three early evening individual alcohol challenge sessions. Subjects were examined on eye movement and psy

Sopite symptoms in the optokinetic drum.

UNLABELLED: Sopite syndrome is a disturbance caused by motion characterized by drowsiness and mood changes that may occur without the classic symptoms of motion sickness. Because sopite symptoms are often subtle, it is important to assess for their presence, and to distinguish true sopite symptoms from changes in mood and drowsiness that are due to non-motion related factors such as fatigue and boredom. We compared sopite symptoms in the optokinetic drum (OKD) with symptoms in a control condition in which the drum's motion cues were removed. METHODS: There were 48 Introductory Psychology stud

Treatment and follow-up of obesity in adolescent girls.

An intervention program was conducted for 12 postmenarche, 12-15-year-old obese girls. Weight Winners, a multicomponent and multidisciplinary after-school intervention program, was developed in which behavior modification, aerobic exercise, and modeling appropriate behaviors for weight control were emphasized. Evaluation made before and immediately after the intervention and at a nine-month follow-up suggested that the after-school treatment program was successful in: 1) reducing the rate of gain and decreasing body weight by 11% while maintaining lean tissue and resting energy expenditure (RE

Human factors in aircraft incidents: results of a 7-year study.

Human error causes or contributes to considerably over half of all aviation mishaps. This report describes a 7-year study of aircraft incident data conducted in an attempt to further our understanding of the phenomenon of human error. The study of incidents as a surrogate for aircraft accidents is relevant only if incidents constitute a population or universe of which accidents are a subset. This assumption has been examined in a study of over 35,000 reports of aviation incidents collected from 1976-83 by the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System. One-third of the reports involve conflicts amo

[The connection between videoanalytic regular measurements of non-verbal behavior and self-assessed mood].

13 manic-depressive patients were examined during a symptom-free interval while under treatment with lithium, and again after a 6-week placebo period. The results are based on a behavioral analysis of video-taped interviews as well as a self-rating of mood with a multidimensional questionnaire (Hecheltjen & Mertesdorf, MSF). This questionnaire was presented on the day of the interviews. The following parameters were examined: 1. Duration of speech activity, 2. Frequency of hand movements accompanying speech, 3. Frequency of discrete body touchings. In order to clarify the interdependency of th

The buffering effect of perceived teacher support on students' academic burnout in online learning: a mini review.

The widespread adoption of online learning in higher education has brought increased attention to academic burnout among university students. Although numerous studies have explored the manifestations, influencing factors and interventions of college students' online academic burnout, few have consolidated and summarized the buffering effect of perceived teacher support. This Mini-Review, informed by the PRISMA 2020 framework, identified and analyzed 26 empirical studies retrieved from Web of Science and Scopus, extracting key data on research design, sample characteristics, and analytical app

Chinese STEM College Students' AI-Mediated Informal Digital Learning of English: A Hybrid SEM-PNA Approach to the Hedonic-Motivation System Adoption Model.

English proficiency is vital for non-native speakers' career development, yet classroom instruction alone cannot meet practical demands, making informal digital learning of English (IDLE) increasingly important. Artificial intelligence (AI), with conversational and multimodal functions, offers new opportunities for IDLE. However, existing research on AI-mediated IDLE has predominantly focused on language majors and often relied on a single methodological lens, neglecting STEM undergraduates and the complex network dynamics among motivational factors. However, research has largely focused on la

Test engagement in first-year university students seeking course credits.

OBJECTIVES: This preregistered study examined test engagement among Dutch university students participating in psychological research in exchange for course credit. We hypothesized that at least 10% of students would demonstrate invalid performance, that engagement would decline over the course of the assessment, and that the commonly used self-rated test engagement question administered at the end of the assessment would show only limited utility. METHODS: A total of 222 first-year psychology students completed a 45-minute assessment battery and were instructed to maximize their performance

Flower power: How favourite flower colours shape how we feel.

Gardens are widely regarded as restorative environments, yet evidence on how specific design elements influence emotions remains limited. This study examined flower colour, a core principle of garden design, and its role in emotional responses. We collected data from 11,569 participants, who attended the interactive exhibit at RHS Wisley Garden. Participants selected favourite flower colours using a digital colour picker and reported emotions they associated with that colour. We analysed hue and cut (saturated, dark, light, muted), resulting in 36 analysed colour categories. Emotion responses

Emotion Dynamics in Young and Cognitively Diverse Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Prior work has demonstrated age-related increases in emotional well-being and emotional stability. However, little is known about the specific patterns of emotion across daily situations for older adults experiencing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) compared with cognitively normal (CN) older adults and their younger counterparts. METHODS: Young adults (aged 21-34, n = 70), CN older adults (aged 70-83, n = 89), and older adults with MCI (aged 70-84; n = 60) completed an experience sampling procedure (7×/day for 9 days) reporting their current experience of 7 negative emotions and 7

Stock and cryptocurrency trading and problem gambling behavior during early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic: a narrative literature review.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) resulted in a global shift in gambling and trading behaviors. At present, a gap exists in understanding the relationship between excessive trading behavior and problem gambling, especially during the COVID-19 period. This narrative review analyzed (1) the changes in trading and gambling activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) whether the pattern of trading activity resembles problem gambling, and (3) whether excessive trading and problem gambling share similar consequences. METHODS: We searched databases such as Medline, PsychINFO, Sco

An interrupted time series analysis of gambling behavior based on gambling operator revenue-based taxation during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden.

OBJECTIVES: The impact of COVID-19 on gambling behavior and the gambling industry itself has been widely speculated. Prior studies have shown how boredom, social isolation, poor mental health, and financial hardships, all of which have been associated with COVID-19, can aggravate problem gambling behaviors in patients with gambling disorders while also luring newcomers. Few studies have used methods other than self-report to assess longitudinal behavioral changes in gambling behavior before versus during the pandemic. STUDY DESIGN: The present study addresses this gap by using an interrupted

Increased nicotine vaping due to the COVID-19 pandemic among US young adults: Associations with nicotine dependence, vaping frequency, and reasons for use.

Previous research has not examined increased vaping because of the pandemic using a national sample of young adults (YAs), which is a critical gap because pandemic-related increases in vaping among YAs could have important implications for nicotine dependence, prolonged regular use, and using substances to cope with stress. We examined self-reported increased vaping attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic among YAs, and its associations with outcomes that have important implications for future nicotine use. Data came from the Monitoring the Future (MTF) Vaping Supplement. Participants were selecte

Body-focused repetitive behaviors and non-suicidal self-injury: A comparison of clinical characteristics and symptom features.

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are recognized as distinct categories in the DSM-5. However, definitions and assessment of NSSI sometimes encompasses behaviors similar to BFRBs, and little data exist about their clinical differences. The current study examined clinical characteristics and symptom features associated with NSSI vs. BFRBs. The current sample included 1523 individuals who endorsed moderate to severe NSSI (n = 165) or BFRBs: hair pulling group (n = 102), skin picking group (n = 216), nail picking group (n = 253), nail biting group (n =

A Smartphone-based gaming system for vestibular rehabilitation: A usability study.

BACKGROUNDVestibular dysfunctions result in a wide range of impairments and can have debilitating consequences on a person's day-to-day activities. Conventional vestibular rehabilitation is effective but suffers from poor therapy compliance due to boredom. Virtual reality technology can make training more engaging and allow precise quantification of the training process. However, most existing technologies for vestibular rehabilitation are expensive and not suitable for use in patients' homes and most clinics. In this pilot study, we developed and evaluated the usability of a smartphone-based

Reasons for recent marijuana use in relation to use of other illicit drugs among high school seniors in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Studies show that illicit cannabis (marijuana) use is related to use of other illicit drugs and that reasons for use are related to frequency of marijuana use. However, research is needed to examine whether specific reasons for marijuana use are associated with use of other illicit drugs. METHODS: Data from recent marijuana-using high school seniors were examined from 12 cohorts of Monitoring the Future (Weighted n = 6481) to examine whether reasons for recent marijuana use are associated with use of eight other illicit drugs. RESULTS: Using "to experiment" decreased odds of repo
