Neuroprotective effects of myrtenol against brain injury following isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in male rats.

Myocardial infarction (MI) induces brain injury. Myrtenol has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This study investigated the neuroprotective effect of myrtenol following myocardial infarction induced by isoproterenol (ISO) in male rats. This experimental study involved 36 male Wistar rats. They were divided into six groups. Rats received ISO (85 mg/kg) for two days. Subsequently, they were treated with vehicle or myrtenol (5, 25, or 50 mg/kg) once daily, one hour after the last ISO injection, for seven days. Behavioral tests (spontaneous alternation and passive avoidance) were conducte

Methylglyoxal Accumulation is Associated with Brain Inflammation after Myocardial Infarction with Sex and Regional Differences.

Patients with myocardial infarction (MI) have an increased risk of developing neurological disease and cognitive impairment, but the mechanisms underlying the heart-brain interaction remain to be better elucidated. Methylglyoxal (MG), a highly reactive dicarbonyl, is a shared causative factor associated with cardiovascular and neurological diseases. MG-derived advanced glycation end products (MG-AGEs) accumulate in the heart and circulation post-MI, making it a promising target in studying the heart-brain axis. Here, we report that MG-AGEs accumulate in the mouse brain at 6 h and 7 days post-M

The association between carotid artery perivascular fat density and Covert brain infarction following carotid endarterectomy.

Covert brain infarction (CBI) is a common complication after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and is associated with cognitive decline. Carotid artery perivascular fat density (PFD) reflects the severity of inflammation around the artery and is also related to plaque vulnerability. This study aimed to investigate the association between PFD and CBI in patients undergoing CEA. A total of 185 patients who underwent CEA were enrolled. PFD was measured using computed tomography angiography (CTA), and CBI was assessed on postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Baseline characteristics, plaque f

Myocardial infarction elevates endoplasmic reticulum stress and protein aggregation in heart as well as brain.

Cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction (MI), constitute the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Protein-aggregate deposition is a hallmark of aging and neurodegeneration. Our previous study reported that aggregation is strikingly elevated in hearts of hypertensive and aged mice; however, no prior study has addressed MI effects on aggregation in heart or brain. Here, we present novel data on heart and brain aggregation in mice following experimental MI, induced by left coronary artery (LCA) ligation. Infarcted and peri-infarcted heart tissue, and whole cerebra,

In diabetic ketoacidosis brain injury including cerebral oedema and infarction is caused by interleukin-1.

BACKGROUND: Brain injury in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is common but under recognized and affects up to 54% of patients with this complication. It's manifestations include cerebral oedema (CE) and cerebral infarction (CI). The etiology of CE in DKA has up to the present time been uncertain. Practical management had been guided by the assumption that rapid osmotic shifts due to rapid correction of hypovolemia and reduction of plasma glucose could cause a shift of water into the cells. The osmotic effect of glucose can cause inflammation by activation of inflammasomes. Recently it has been reco

[Brain stem infarction, temporal headache, and elevated inflammatory parameters in a 74-year-old man].

We report the case of a 74 year old man with a brain stem infarction, temporal headache and elevated inflammatory parameters. Giant cell arteritis with involvement of the temporal and vertebral arteries was proven by histology, duplex sonography and MRI. Although intensive immunosuppressive therapy was started, the patient developed two brain infarcts within 6 months. Initially, C‑reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were significantly elevated, but normalized over time. Involvement of the vertebral artery in giant cell arteritis is thought to be rare; steroid refractory courses

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor acting on the brain improves detrusor overactivity caused by cerebral infarction in rats.

PURPOSE: The functional contribution of the cholinergic pathway in the frontal cortex to micturition was evaluated following cerebral ischemia. Furthermore, it was examined whether reactivation of this regulatory system using acetylcholinesterase inhibitor could improve detrusor overactivity. METHODS: Left middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was performed in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activities after MCAO were assayed to assess the damage to cholinergic neurons. ChAT activities in the bilateral cortex, hippocampus, and pons were calculated by measuring t

N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide after myocardial infarction: a marker of cardio-renal function.

N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is increased early after acute myocardial infarction. We assessed the relationship of NT-proBNP with left ventricular function and mass as well as with renal function, hemodynamic, and anthropometric variables in 625 outpatients in the chronic phase after myocardial infarction and 465 siblings without infarction (control). NT-proBNP was measured by nonextracted, enzyme-linked, sandwich immunoassay. NT-proBNP was correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction, mass index, and renal function, in addition to infarction history, gender, and

Embolic brain infarction: a rare complication of thoracic outlet syndrome. A report of two cases.

The thoracic outlet syndrome is known to cause brachial neuropathy. Pressure on the subclavian artery causing post-stenotic dilatation with intraluminal thrombosis is not a common complication. This may lead to antegrade embolisation and ischemic changes in the upper limb. In right sided thoracic outlet syndrome the thrombus may extend retrogradely. From this an embolus may detach to the right hemisphere of the brain resulting in left sided hemiplegia. This is a rare but serious complication from a neglected, relatively benign, curable condition. This report describes two cases of a right side

CT contrast enhancement on brain scans and blood-CSF barrier disturbances in cerebral ischemic infarction.

CT contrast enhancement of the ischemic infarction, blood-CSF barrier function for albumin, and severity of neurological symptoms were evaluated at predefined intervals in 41 patients with supratentorial ischemic infarctions. Contrast enhancement was most frequently observed in the 2nd and 3rd week after the stroke. This late CT enhancement was not related to infarction size and severity of blood-CSF barrier disturbance. The rare appearance of CT enhancement in the 1st week was usually associated with extensive infarctions and accompanied by blood-CSF barrier disturbances. These barrier distur

APOM-associated inflammation and apoptosis in stroke-exacerbated myocardial infarction: implications for brain-heart interactions.

Brain-heart syndrome (BHS) describes cardiac dysfunction secondary to central nervous system injury, with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) serving as a critical driver that exacerbates myocardial infarction (MI). This study aimed to elucidate the role of Apolipoprotein M (APOM) in stroke-aggravated MI and to explore its underlying systemic and molecular mechanisms. Clinical data were analyzed to evaluate the correlation between stroke and MI. A combined mouse model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and MI was established to assess neurological and cardiac injury. Quantitative proteomics an

Malignant Middle Cerebral Artery Infarction Due to Hyponatremia Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Development of syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion or cerebral salt wasting has been commonly noted in post-traumatic brain injury, and this condition may lead to hyponatremia resulting in cerebral edema and possible cerebral herniation. However, the predominant topographic pattern of edema from hyponatremia has not been well documented. Unlike numerous reports on hyponatremia and vasospasm following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, the data for traumatic brain injury patient are still limited. We report on a rare patient with malignant middle cerebral artery

Involvement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in exercise‑induced cardioprotection of post-myocardial infarction rats.

Exercise induces a number of benefits, including angiogenesis in post‑myocardial infarction (MI); however, the underlying mechanisms have not been fully clarified. Neurotrophic brain‑derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) serves a protective role in certain adult cardiac diseases through its specific receptor, BDNF/NT‑3 growth factors receptor (TrkB). The present study explored the mechanisms by which exercise improves cardiac function, with a focus on the involvement of the BDNF/TrkB axis. MI rats were assigned to Sham, sedentary, exercise, exercise with K252a (a TrkB inhibitor), and exercise wit
