Distribution of growth hormone-responsive cells in the brain of rats and mice.

A growth hormone (GH) injection is able to induce the phosphorylated form of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (pSTAT5) in a large number of cells throughout the mouse brain. The present study had the objective to map the distribution of GH-responsive cells in the brain of rats that received an intracerebroventricular injection of GH and compare it to the pattern found in mice. We observed that rats and mice exhibited a similar distribution of GH-induced pSTAT5 in the majority of areas of the telencephalon, hypothalamus and brainstem. However, rats exhibited a higher densi

rTMS treatments combined with speech training for a conduction aphasia patient: A case report with MRI study.

RATIONALE: To date, little is known regarding the neural mechanisms of the functional recovery of language after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in aphasia. Our aim was to investigate the mechanism that underlies rTMS and speech training in a case report. PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: We report the case of a 39-year-old woman who was initially diagnosed with conduction aphasia following a left hemisphere stroke. INTERVENTIONS: The rTMS location comprised the left Broca area, and a frequency of 5 Hz for 20 min/d for 10 days during a 2-week period was used. She had receiv

Further analysis of the effects of immunotoxic lesions of the basal nucleus of Meynert reveals substantial impairment on visual discrimination learning in monkeys.

In this paper we undertake a combined analysis of several studies in which marmoset monkeys received immunotoxic lesions of the cortical cholinergic projections from the basal nucleus of Meynert (NBM) bilaterally and/or in combination with immunotoxic lesions of other parts of the cholinergic system or ablations of the target inferotemporal neocortical area. Analysis of the mean learning scores across all visual discriminations learning tasks for each lesion combination revealed highly significant impairments where the NBM was lesioned bilaterally or where an NBM lesion in one hemisphere was c

A Global Multiregional Proteomic Map of the Human Cerebral Cortex.

The Brodmann area (BA)-based map is one of the most widely used cortical maps for studies of human brain functions and in clinical practice; however, the molecular architecture of BAs remains unknown. The present study provided a global multiregional proteomic map of the human cerebral cortex by analyzing 29 BAs. These 29 BAs were grouped into 6 clusters based on similarities in proteomic patterns: the motor and sensory cluster, vision cluster, auditory and Broca's area cluster, Wernicke's area cluster, cingulate cortex cluster, and heterogeneous function cluster. We identified 474 cluster-spe

Alterations in Anatomical Covariance in the Prematurely Born.

Preterm (PT) birth results in long-term alterations in functional and structural connectivity, but the related changes in anatomical covariance are just beginning to be explored. To test the hypothesis that PT birth alters patterns of anatomical covariance, we investigated brain volumes of 25 PTs and 22 terms at young adulthood using magnetic resonance imaging. Using regional volumetrics, seed-based analyses, and whole brain graphs, we show that PT birth is associated with reduced volume in bilateral temporal and inferior frontal lobes, left caudate, left fusiform, and posterior cingulate for

The validity of Barlow's 1877 case of acquired childhood aphasia: case notes versus published reports.

In 1877, Barlow described a ten-year-old boy with right hemiplegia and aphasia, quick recovery of language function, and subsequent left hemiplegia and aphasia, who was shown to have symmetrical left and right Broca's area lesions at autopsy. The report of this case motivated many writers in the second half of the nineteenth century to develop theories on localization, laterality, equipotentiality and development of specialization, recovery of function, and the role of the right hemisphere (see Finger et al., 2003, for review). This paper presents an analysis of the original archived case note

The role of language areas in motor control dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

We evaluated the differences in motor control organization between parkinsonian patients with (seven cases) and without (ten cases) gait disorder. We used positron emission tomography (O15-H2O-PET) to measure regional cerebral blood flow as a correlate for local neuronal activation. This has been assessed during repetitive joystick movements of the right hand, externally triggered using a metronome as an auditory cue. In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) without gait disorder, the contralateral supplementary motor cortex and the bilateral cerebellum were activated, while in PD patients wi

Prostaglandin E receptor EP3 subtype is involved in thermal hyperalgesia through its actions in the preoptic hypothalamus and the diagonal band of Broca in rats.

The effects of microinjection of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) (0.5 fg-500 pg/0.2 microl) into the medial part of the preoptic area (MPO) on nociception were studied using a hot-plate test in rats. The intraMPO microinjection of PGE2 only at non-pyrogenic doses (5-50 fg) reduced the paw-withdrawal latency, suggesting hyperalgesia. Maximal reduction was obtained 15 min after the injection of PGE2 at 50 fg. Subsequently, to determine which types of prostanoid receptors are involved in the hyperalgesic effect of PGE2 in the MPO, we administered PGE2 receptor agonists, i.e., 17-phenyl-omega-trinor PGE2

Dissociation of writing processes: functional magnetic resonance imaging during writing of Japanese ideographic characters.

Dissociation between copying letters and writing to dictation has been reported in the clinical neuropsychological literature. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted in normal volunteers to detect the neurofunctional differences between 'copying Kanji', the Japanese ideographic characters, and 'writing Kanji corresponding to phonological information'. Four tasks were conducted: the copying-Kanji task, the writing-Kanji-corresponding-to-phonogram task, the Kanji-grapheme-puzzle task, and the control task. The right superior parietal lobule was extensively activated during th

Left cerebral cortex complexity differences in sporadic healthy individuals with auditory verbal hallucinations: A pilot study.

In the present pilot study, we aimed to characterize the brain surface differences between 42 sporadic healthy individuals with AVHs (Hi-AVHs) and 50 healthy individuals without AVHs. The Auditory Hallucinations Rating Scale (AHRS) was used to assess the severity of AVHs, while the gyrification index and fractal dimensions were used to evaluate cerebral cortex complexity. We observed a significant increase of the gyrification index was located in the left superior temporal gyrus, the left temporoparietal junction, the left superior frontal gyrus, and the left parietal lobe. The fractal dimensi

Syntax through the looking glass: A review on two-word linguistic processing across behavioral, neuroimaging and neurostimulation studies.

In recent years a growing number of studies on syntactic processing has employed basic two-word constructions (e.g., "the tree") to characterize the fundamental aspects of linguistic composition. This large body of evidence allows, for the first time, to closely examine which cognitive processes and neural substrates support the combination of two syntactic units into a more complex one, mirroring the nature of combinatory operations described in theoretical linguistics. The present review comprehensively examines behavioral, neuroimaging and neurostimulation studies investigating basic syntac

Axono-cortical evoked potentials: A proof-of-concept study.

Awake surgery is currently considered the best method to tailor intraparenchymatous resections according to functional boundaries. However, the exact mechanisms by which electrical stimulation disturbs behavior remain largely unknown. In this case report, we describe a new method to explore the propagation toward cortical sites of a brief pulse applied to an eloquent white matter pathway. We present a patient, operated on in awake condition for removal of a cavernoma of the left ventral premotor cortex. At the end of the resection, the application of 60Hz stimulation in the white matter of the

Heschl's gyrus and the temporal pole: The cortical lateralization of language.

The left lateralization of language has been attributed to hemispheric specialization for processing rapidly changing information. While interhemispheric differences in auditory cortex organization support this view, the macrostructure of the entire cerebral cortex has not been thoroughly examined from this perspective. This study investigated hemispheric asymmetries in cortical surface area and thickness and their relationship to pronunciation scores from oral reading using the Human Connectome Project Young Adult dataset (N=1113). Heschl's gyrus had the most left-lateralized surface area, wh

Age-Related Differences and Heritability of the Perisylvian Language Networks.

UNLABELLED: Acquisition of language skills depends on the progressive maturation of specialized brain networks that are usually lateralized in adult population. However, how genetic and environmental factors relate to the age-related differences in lateralization of these language pathways is still not known. We recruited 101 healthy right-handed subjects aged 9-40 years to investigate age-related differences in the anatomy of perisylvian language pathways and 86 adult twins (52 monozygotic and 34 dizygotic) to understand how heritability factors influence language anatomy. Selective impairment of verb processing associated with pathological changes in Brodmann areas 44 and 45 in the motor neurone disease-dementia-aphasia syndrome.

We report six patients with clinically diagnosed and electrophysiologically confirmed motor neurone disease (MND), in whom communication problems were an early and dominant feature. All patients developed a progressive non-fluent aphasia culminating in some cases in complete mutism. In five cases, formal testing revealed deficits in syntactic comprehension. Comprehension and production of verbs were consistently more affected those that of nouns and this effect remained stable upon subsequent testing, despite overall deterioration. The classical signs of MND, including wasting, fasciculations

Temporal dynamics of cortical representation for action.

Brain-imaging studies have shown that the human Broca's region and precentral motor cortex are activated both during execution of hand actions and during observation of similar actions performed by other individuals. We aimed to clarify the temporal dynamics of this cortical activation by neuromagnetic recordings during execution, on-line imitation, and observation of right-hand reaching movements that ended with a precision pinch of the tip of a manipulandum. During execution, the left inferior frontal cortex [Brodmann's area (BA) 44] was activated first (peak approximately 250 ms before the

Features of the speech processing network in post- and prelingually deaf cochlear implant users.

The onset of hearing loss can lead to altered brain structure and functions. However, hearing restoration may also result in distinct cortical reorganization. A differential pattern of functional remodeling was observed between post- and prelingual cochlear implant users, but it remains unclear how these speech processing networks are reorganized after cochlear implantation. To explore the impact of language acquisition and hearing restoration on speech perception in cochlear implant users, we conducted assessments of brain activation, functional connectivity, and graph theory-based analysis u

Pilot-RCT Finds No Evidence for Modulation of Neuronal Networks of Auditory Hallucinations by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is used as treatment for auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH). The theory behind the treatment is that tDCS increases activity in prefrontal cognitive control areas, which are assumed to be hypoactive, and simultaneously decreases activity in temporal speech perception areas, which are assumed to be hyperactive during AVH. We tested this hypofrontal/hypertemporal reversal theory by investigating anatomical, neurotransmitter, brain activity, and network connectivity changes over the course of tDCS treatment. METHODS: A double-blind, ra

Processing nouns and verbs in the left frontal cortex: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Neuropsychological and neurophysiological studies suggest that the production of verbs in speech depends on cortical regions in the left frontal lobe. However, the precise topography of these regions, and their functional roles in verb production, remains matters of debate. In an earlier study with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), we showed that stimulation to the left anterior midfrontal gyrus disrupted verb production, but not noun production, in a task that required subjects to perform simple morphological alternations. This result raises a number of questions: for examp
