The ability of Brucella spp. to infect human osteoblasts and the cytokine response of these cells to infection were investigated in vitro. Brucella abortus, B. suis, B. melitensis, and B. canis were able to infect the SaOS-2 and MG-63 osteoblastic cell lines, and the first three species exhibited intracellular replication. B. abortus internalization was not significantly affected by pretreatment of cells with cytochalasin D but was inhibited up to 92% by colchicine. A virB10 mutant of B. abortus could infect but not replicate within osteoblasts, suggesting a role for the type IV secretion syst

Infertility in dogs is a growing concern in breeding kennels. There are a number of bacteria, viruses, and husbandry practices that must be considered to determine the cause of decreased litter sizes, abortions, weak puppies, and lack of pregnancy, but brucellosis should be at the top of the differential list.

BACKGROUND: Brucella species include economically important zoonotic pathogens that can infect a wide range of animals. There are currently six classically recognised species of Brucella although, as yet unnamed, isolates from various marine mammal species have been reported. In order to investigate genetic relationships within the group and identify potential diagnostic markers we have sequenced multiple genetic loci from a large sample of Brucella isolates representing the known diversity of the genus.
RESULTS: Nine discrete genomic loci corresponding to 4,396 bp of sequence were examined f

As one of the most common zoonoses globally, brucellosis threatens not only animals but also humans with Brucella (B.) melitensis, B. abortus and B. suis biovar 1&3, being more virulent for humans than B. canis, B. ovis and B. suis biovar 2. Canine brucellosis is caused mainly by B. canis, however, B. suis infections in dogs have been reported sporadically in Europe and more frequently in Australia. B. suis infection in dogs is mainly associated with hunting or wild-animal exposure and rarely with consumption of commercial raw meat products. In Switzerland, B. canis is sporadically diagnosed i

The Peruvian population of the South American fur seal ( Arctocephalus australis ) is a distinct evolutionarily significant unit that is endangered. One of the largest rookeries for this species in Peru is located within the Punta San Juan marine protected area (15°22'S, 75°12'W). To better understand the current health status of this population, exposure to 10 pinniped pathogens was evaluated in adult female fur seals (n=29) via serology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques in November 2010. The results suggest this population is naïve to canine and phocine distemper viruses (serum

One hundred and ninety serum samples, mainly from children and teenagers, from northeast Bali were tested for the presence of antibodies against five zoonotic agents: Brucella abortus, Coxiella burnetii, Toxoplasma gondii, Toxocara canis and Trichinella spiralis. All children were negative for brucellosis and Q fever. A high prevalence rate was found for toxocariasis (63.2%) and trichinosis (19.5%). Antibody prevalence against T. gondii was found to be rather low (3.1%). To our knowledge, this is the first evidence of toxoplasmosis, toxocariasis and trichinosis infection in humans on Bali. Eat

In the study of interactions between facultative intracellular pathogens and macrophages, monocytic cell lines have the advantages of showing defined states of activation and lacking genetic variation among donors, thus yielding reproducible results. Nonpathogenic Escherichia coli K12 were killed at similar rates in the U937 cell line differentiated into macrophage-like cells by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) or by the combination of retinoic acid (RA) and vitamin D3 (VD). Complete elimination was reached only when cells were activated by lipopolysaccharide for 30 min prior to infection, and

A large breeding kennel of Bulldogs (n = 57) experienced several Canid herpesvirus 1 (CHV-1)-related diseases in older puppies (9 weeks of age) in Arkansas. CHV-1 has been repeatedly confirmed in the kennel in several animals for 3 years (January 2012-February 2015) using various virology tests. I was able to detect a partial sequence of CHV DNA (~120 bp) in archived formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks after 3 years of storage. CHV-1 is persistently circulating in this kennel in spite of high serum antibody titers in the adult dogs. The dogs were negative for canine brucellosis ant

Wild boars show increasing numbers and population densities throughout Europe, including Hungary. While their presence is appreciated as game animals, they are also responsible for significant agricultural damage, habitat degradation and water quality issues. In addition, wild boars may harbor ticks and can act as reservoirs of tick-borne pathogens, thus posing a risk of transmission towards humans and domestic animals. This latter aspect of their veterinary-medical and epidemiological significance has become especially important in recent years, because increasing numbers of wild boars are re

Salient features of brucellosis in dogs caused by Brucella canis are briefly reviewed, with emphasis on problems and pitfalls in the serodiagnosis of the disease. Procedures available to veterinarians for the diagnosis of canine brucellosis are discussed from the point of view of test sensitivity and specificity. The serodiagnosis of the disease poses a particular dilemma because several tests in current use by diagnostic laboratories have not been evaluated critically and may provide false-positive results. Blood cultures should be required of dogs who have not received antibiotics before a p

Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease transmittable to humans from infected animal reservoirs. Malta, Rock, Gibraltar, Cyprus or Mediterranean fever, Bang's disease, intermittent typhoid or typho-malarial fever, undulant fever, etc. are just various synonyms for brucellosis. Patients suffering from this disease show unspecific symptoms, e.g. fever, chills, malaise, arthralgia, headache, tiredness and weakness. Human brucellosis may be caused by four of totally six genetically and phenotypically closely related Brucella species, i.e. B. melitensis, B. abortus, B. suis and B. canis. Although

OBJECTIVES: Canine brucellosis, caused by Brucella canis, is a zoonosis transmitted through contact with infected dogs or infectious reproductive materials. Following a report of human B. canis infection in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, in April 2025, canine brucellosis was identified at a dog breeding facility operated by the patient's spouse. A joint investigation was conducted to assess potential transmission and prevent further spread.
METHODS: Interviews assessed symptoms, facility visits, and dog contact; blood culture results were reviewed. Of 99 dogs at the facility, 85 aged ≥6 months underwe

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis, as a zoonotic disease, mainly occurs in horses by Brucella abortus, Brucella canis and Brucella suis. The disease in equines is often asymptomatic, but the clinical signs in horses are mostly characterized by bursitis, arthritis and tenosynovitis.
OBJECTIVES: This study, thus, aimed to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis and its associated risk factors in the Arabian horses of Khuzestan province, South-west Iran.
METHODS: To that end, the blood samples randomly collected from 180 Arabian horses were analyzed for the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies by Ros

Human brucellosis, one of the most common zoonoses worldwide, rarely occurs in Japan, and only a few chronic cases have been reported. We herein report the case of a 39-year-old Japanese woman with chronic human brucellosis, considered a Brucella canis infection, that persisted for 19 years. Her medical history and fever pattern suggested chronic brucellosis, and the diagnosis was made based on the results of a serum tube agglutination test (SAT). After undergoing combination therapy with streptomycin and doxycycline, she achieved symptomatic relief and showed negative SAT results. Even in non

Brucellosis is a neglected zoonotic disease caused by alpha proteobacterial genus Brucella comprising of facultative intracellular pathogenic species that can infect both animals and humans. In this study, we aimed to identify genome-wide unique insertion sequence (IS) elements among Brucella abortus, B. melitensis, B. ovis, B. suis and B. canis for use in species differentiation by conducting an intensive in silico-based comparative genomic analysis. As a result, 25, 27, 37, 86 and 3 unique ISs were identified respectively and they had a striking pattern of distribution among them. To explain

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can lead to treatment failure in human bacterial infections, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. Brucellosis is a globally significant zoonotic infection caused by Brucella spp. bacteria, yet the frequency and extent of AMR in Brucella populations from humans are poorly characterised. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated AMR in populations of Brucella species responsible for the vast majority of brucellosis in humans (B. melitensis, B. abortus, B. suis and B. canis). The search and inclusion criteria identified studies which used test

The global burden of human and animal brucellosis remains enormous. The disease, which is endemic in Nigeria, lacks appropriate attention and national data. This review estimated the burden and distribution of human and animal brucellosis in Nigeria in the last twenty years (2001-2021). Publications reporting the detection of brucellosis in Nigeria were sorted from different search engines, including PubMed, ResearchGate, Scopus, and Google Scholar, to generate data on its prevalence, spatial distribution, and predisposing factors. The results of the national seroprevalence of human and animal
