Hydrological modelling of snail dispersal patterns in Msambweni, Kenya and potential resurgence of Schistosoma haematobium transmission.

Urinary schistosomiasis is an important source of human morbidity in Msambweni, Kenya, where the intermediate host snail, Bulinus nasutus is found in ponds and water pools. In the past, aquatic habitats in the area have been studied separately; however, recent collections of B. nasutus snails and shells indicated that many of these ponds are in fact connected during and following sufficient rains. Satellite imagery and a geographical information system (GIS) were used to survey the main water courses and potential drainage routes, to locate potential source populations of snails and to determi

Laboratory assessment of the molluscicidal and cercaricidal activities of the Egyptian weed, Solanum nigrum L.

The molluscicidal properties of Solanum nigrum L. were tested against three Egyptian snail species (Biomphalaria alexandrina, Bulinus truncatus and Lymnaea natalensis), each an intermediate host of parasites causing human schistosomiasis or fascioliasis. The plant was collected in two regions within Egypt: Fayium and Giza. Snails were exposed for 24 and 48 h, to the dry powdered fruits and leaves or to crude water extracts of the powders, and mortality was recorded. The water extract of the leaves collected in Fayium (FLWE) had the highest molluscicidal activity, with median lethal concentrati

The mouse as a suitable host for an isolate of Schistosoma haematobium from Niger.

The host-parasite relationships of a Schistosoma haematobium isolate, originating from Niger, and the white mouse are described. Swiss OF1 albino mice were exposed individually to 200 cercariae and worms were recovered 9, 12, 16 and 20 weeks post infection. The mean worm returns ranged between 10.54 and 13.05% and did not alter significantly between 9 and 20 weeks post infection. The sex ratio of worms was always in favour of males; from 7.09:1 at 9 weeks after infection it decreased regularly to 3.28:1 at 20 weeks. Male worms reached a mean length of 8.72 mm at 20 weeks. From the 12th week po

Mating behaviour in mixed infections of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mattheei.

In mixed infections of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mattheei, homospecific and heterospecific pairs are formed, with a preponderance of homospecific pairs indicating the existence of a mate preference system. S. haematobium apparently exhibits a greater specific mate recognition system than does S. mattheei. In sequential infections when mice are exposed to S. mattheei 4 weeks after infection with S. haematobium, S. haematobium males are better at pairing with S. mattheei females than are S. mattheei males. Hence, genetic exchanges between S. haematobium and S. mattheei giving rise to viable

Further assessment of Mirazid as antischistosomal drug in experimental schistosomiasis hematobium.

Conflicting reports are found in the literature about the efficacy of Mirazid (MZ), which is a special formulation of myrrh obtained from the stem of Commiphora molmol (Nees), Engl. tree (Burseraceae), as an antischistosomal drug. This initiated the present study to further assess this drug in experimental schistosomiasis hematobium. The drug was administered orally to hamsters infected with Schistosoma hematobium ( Bilharz, 1852 ) using 500 mg/kg body weight for six successive days on an empty stomach. The drug effect was examined after three periods: 4, 8 and 12 weeks post-treatment. Emphasi

[Parasitological profile of urinary schistosomiasis of the Sourou hydroagricultural complex of Burkina Faso].

In the Sourou area of Burkina Faso, parasitological and malacological surveys of urinary schistosomiasis have been carried out in the constructed sites of Guédougou, Niasan and Débé dating respectively from 1967, 1986 and 1996. The investigations covered also the traditional villages of Lanfiera, Di, Poro, Tiao and Mara situated in the middle of the hydroagricultural planning for the first, very close to the lake for the second and about twenty kilometres distant for the three last. These towns represent the main sites in the Sourou area. The results of the parasitological surveys showed that

Laboratory evaluation of B-2 as a molluscicide in the control of the snail intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis in South Africa.

There is a continuous need for the development and evaluation of new, inexpensive but highly effective molluscides for the control of freshwater snails acting as intermediate hosts of schistomiasis. For this reason B-2 (Hokko Chemical Industry Co. Ltd, Japan), also called Phebrol (sodium 2,5-dichloro-4-bromophenol), was evaluated in our laboratory as a candidate molluscicide for the control of freshwater snails in South Africa. Bulinus africanus and Biomphalaria pfeifferi, intermediate hosts of Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni respectively, were exposed to different B-2 concentr

A study of some factors influencing the epidemiology of urinary schistosomiasis at Ifakara (Kilombero District, Morogoro Region, Tanzania).

Some factors influencing the epidemiology of urinary schistosomiasis were studied at Ifakara between 1978 and 1980. Ifakara is situated in the fertile plain of the Kilombero river in the south-eastern part of Tanzania. The overall prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium infection among primary school children (6-19 years) in the Ifakara agglomeration was 21% (730/3478). The highest prevalence was observed in both sexes in the age group 15-19 years. Distinct variations in prevalence were found between the individual schools examined, ranging from 5 to 71% and indicating a focal transmission of th

The specific methods of control and eradication of schistosomiasis in Israel.

A review of the epidemiological status of urinary schistosomiasis and intestinal schistosomiasis in Israel is made. The ecology, bionomy and geographical distribution of the snail vectors were studied and research on their vectorial capacity to the imported Schistosoma strains was undertaken. Biomphalaria alexandrina, the snail vector of S. mansomi, was eradicated through ecological factors (salinity and pollution by sewage) and human activities. The elimination of snail vectors by applications of chemicals succeeded when the entire infested foci were isolated. The factors responsible for the

The use of a molluscicide in conjunction with chemotherapy to control Schistosoma haematobium at the Barombi Lake foci in Cameroon. II. Urinary examination methods, the use of niridazole to attack the parasite in man, and the effect on transmission from man to snail.

The use of niridazole, in conjunction with snail control, in an attempt to control the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium at 2 Cameroon crater-lake villages is described. Quantitative examinations of urines for S. haematobium eggs were made on the whole population before control began, at intervals during the maintenance of control, and again after control ceased. The methods and difficulties are described, and their accuracy is discussed. After each examination all accessible egg-passers were treated or re-treated with niridazole. The drug was well tolerated and effective. Most treated p

Age-acquired resistance and predisposition to reinfection with Schistosoma haematobium after treatment with praziquantel in Mali.

The effect of age, previous intensity of infection, and exposure on reinfection with Schistosoma haematobium after treatment was studied in a cohort of 468 subjects six years of age and over living in an irrigation scheme area in Mali. Prevalence and intensity of S. haematobium infection were measured each year between 1989 and 1991, but the reinfection study period was restricted to the last year of the follow-up. Observations were made at the principal water contact sites where the number of Bulinus truncatus shedding furcocercous cercariae was recorded. A cumulative index of exposure taking

Studies on schistosomiasis in the Niger Delta: Schistosoma intercalatum in the urban city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Ova of S. intercalatum have been found in the urban city of Port Harcourt in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria, following examination of stool and urine samples from 1,709 persons (5-15 years of age) resident in various parts of the city. The ova occurred only in urine, with prevalence ranging from 1.0% to 9.8% with an overall prevalence of 5.7%. The intensity of the infection was low. Most infected individuals had counts of less than 500 ova in total bladder content. There was no significant difference in either the prevalence or intensity of the infection among the sexes (Male; prevalence 6.1%

The epidemiology of schistosomiasis in the vicinity of Lake Sibaya, with a note on other areas of Tongaland (Natal, South Africa).

The epidemiology of human and bovine schistosomiasis in the Lake Sibaya area of Tongaland, South Africa, an undeveloped rural environment, is discussed. The mean prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium infection is 72%, but S. mansoni is absent; possible reasons for this are given and the different types of water habitat are shown to play different roles in transmission. Fear of crocodiles and hippopotami is important because villagers are compelled to use for domestic purposes, the smaller, shallower habitats, where Bulinus (Ph.) globosus occurs but not Biomphalaria pfeifferi, rather than the d

Effects of Land-Use and Environmental Factors on Snail Distribution and Trematode Infection in Ethiopia.

Freshwater snails are intermediate hosts for several snail-borne diseases affecting humans and animals. Understanding the distribution of snail intermediate hosts and their infection status is very important to plan and implement effective disease prevention and control interventions. In this study, we determined the abundance, distribution, and trematode infection status of freshwater snails in two agro-ecological zones of Ethiopia. We sampled snails from 13 observation sites and examined them for trematode infections using a natural cercarial shedding method. A redundancy analysis (RDA) was

Biological studies on the snail intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis with a special emphasis on using larval echinostomes as biocontrol agent against larval schistosomes and snails.

The present investigation deals with the infectivity of the two snail intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis, Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus collected from nine drains in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt. The rate of infection among the snails was general low being 0% in many drains. Regarding B. alexandrina, the rate of infection ranged from 4-16%, and in B. truncatus ranged from 4-8%. Infection with larval echinostomes was dominant over larval schistosomes in the two snail vectors. The distribution of larval schistosomes was restricted to the hepatopancreas of the two snail vectors,

[The distribution of freshwater molluscs the intermediate hosts of human schistosomas in Katan, south-Kivu].

In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the prevalence of bilharziasis due to Schistosoma mansoni is high along the Kivu lake shoreline where Biomphalaria pfeifferi, i.e. the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, is the only snail that has been described until now. Although their occurrence has not been reported in the area, other schistosomas remain possible since their intermediate hosts are present. This study was carried out in 1992 to determine the distribution of intermediate host snails in freshwater systems in the region. Samples were collected according to the standardized harves

Urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis in the Tono Irrigation Scheme, Kassena/Nankana District, upper east region, Ghana.

Human- and snail-related aspects of transmission of urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis were studied in the Tono Irrigation Scheme in northern Ghana. The scheme became operational in 1977. In some schools, prevalences and intensities of both Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium infection were alarmingly high, pointing to human schistosomiasis being at least focally a health problem of major public health concern. Positive correlations between intensity of schistosome infection, as measured by egg output, with frequency of visible haematuria and history of haematuria point to opportunities
