Pathogenesis of septal fibrosis of the liver. (An experimental study with a new model.).

Septal fibrosis is an important, frequent, and non-specific type of fibrosis associated with chronic liver diseases, but its pathogenesis is still poorly understood. An interesting model of septal fibrosis occurs in rats infected with the nematode Capillaria hepatica. This model was used to investigate the pathogenesis, site of origin, structure, and cell-types of septal fibrosis. Forty young adult Wistar rats were inoculated with 800 embryonated eggs of C. hepatica. Daily liver samples were obtained from the 20th to the 39th day after inoculation to cover the critical period when septal fibro

Epidemiology and treatment of respiratory nematode infections in western European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus).

Respiratory nematodes are common in rescued western European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus), but their epidemiology and treatment in rehabilitation settings remain poorly defined. We investigated respiratory nematode infections in 78 fecal samples of 30 hedgehogs admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation center in southern Portugal and in putative gastropod intermediate hosts. Outcomes after subcutaneous levamisole (10-20 mg/kg) and ivermectin (3 mg/kg) treatments, monitored by the Baermann technique, were compared. Respiratory nematode infections were highly prevalent in rescued hedgehogs and ma

A novel use of a geometric morphometric technique to distinguish human parasite eggs of twelve different species.

Copro-microscopic diagnostic methods are the most common approach for screening patients with parasitic infections. However, expertise is required to identify helminthic eggs from fecal specimens. Consequently, new methods are required to support accurate species identification. Novel technologies have recently been developed for the classification of organisms, including geometric morphometric (GM) approaches. In this study, the outline-based GM approach was used to distinguish the eggs of 12 common human parasite species, including Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Enterobius vermic

Parasites of the Blue Antimora, Antimora rostrata and Slender Codling, Halargyreus johnsonii (Gadiformes: Moridae), in the Northwestern Atlantic.

PURPOSE: The blue antimora, Antimora rostrata and slender codling, Halargyreus johnsonii (Gadoformes: Moridae) are common representatives of deep-water marine demersal fish fauna. This paper focuses on infections in blue antimora caught in the northwestern Atlantic region, but also reports observations on the parasites of slender codling obtained from a limited number of specimens from the same location. METHODS: Standard methods of parasitological examination, fixation and staining were used. In addition, a genetic analysis of the found acanthocephalans was performed to clarify their taxonom

Eucoleus garfiai (Gállego et Mas-Coma, 1975) (Nematoda: Capillariidae) infection in wild boars (Sus scrofa leucomystax) from the Amakusa Islands, Japan.

We examined lingual tissues of Japanese wild boars (Sus scrofa leucomystax) captured in the Amakusa Islands off the coast of Kumamoto Prefecture. One hundred and forty wild boars were caught in 11 different locations in Kamishima (n = 36) and Shimoshima (n = 104) in the Amakusa Islands, Japan between January 2016 and April 2018. Lingual tissues were subjected to histological examinations, where helminths and their eggs were observed in the epithelium of 51 samples (36.4%). No significant differences in prevalence were observed according to maturity, sex or capture location. Lingual tissues pos

A survey of gastro-intestinal parasitic infection in domestic and wild birds in Chittagong and Greater Sylhet, Bangladesh.

A survey of gastrointestinal parasitic infection as determined by faecal examination was conducted among domestic and wild birds in Bangladesh. Birds were sampled from households, wet markets and wetlands in Chittagong and Greater Sylhet districts during April 2012 to February 2013. Mist nets were used to catch resident wild and migratory birds. The overall prevalence of parasitic infection ranged among locations from 25 to 55% in indigenous domestic ducks (live bird samples=304), 20% in resident wild birds (environmental faecal samples=40) and 40% in migratory birds (live bird samples=35). Helminth Fauna of Wild Boars (Sus scrofa): A Coprological Survey from Southern Italy.

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations have increased worldwide, causing sanitary and environmental concerns. These ungulates can harbor a wide range of pathogens that should be carefully monitored due to the zoonotic potential and risk of transmission to domestic pigs. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and distribution of helminth infections among wild boars in southern Italy and to explore associated risk factors for infections. A total of 369 wild boars were culled during one hunting season in four hunting districts in the Campania region, and individual fecal egg counts were performed

Co-Infection, but Not Infection Intensity, Increases Shedding in a Gastrointestinal Helminth of Gamebirds.

Host heterogeneity in disease transmission is commonly seen across host-pathogen systems, and identifying individuals who contribute disproportionately to pathogen transmission (i.e., superspreaders) is key to understanding disease dynamics and managing outbreaks. It is often assumed that shedding intensity is directly proportional to infection intensity. However, theory predicts that co-infection might modulate the relationship between infection intensity and shedding, promoting increased onward transmission. Here, we quantify the relative importance of infection intensity and co-infection on

Aonchotheca annulosa and Aonchotheca murissylvatici, which is which? A reappraisal of the gastrointestinal Aonchotheca (Nematoda: Capillariidae) species common in wood mice and bank voles.

Wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and bank voles (Myodes glareolus) are often employed as natural study models in infectious disease ecology. Yet the identities of some elements of their parasite fauna have been subject to long-standing confusion. One instance of this relates to 2 nominal species of the capillariid nematode genus Aonchotheca: Aonchotheca annulosa (Dujardin, 1845) and A. murissylvatici (Diesing, 1851). Through literature review, analysis of recorded host- and site-specificity and tracing of taxonomic precedence, it is possible to confirm that A. annulosa is a valid species with a

Verminous pneumonia in European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus).

The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is a common wildlife species in European countries. Populations are declining due to anthropogenic factors and natural diseases. Verminous pneumonia has been observed as a frequent infectious disease in hedgehogs submitted for diagnostic postmortem examination. This prompted the present in-depth investigation on the lungs of 27 necropsied hedgehogs with confirmed lungworm infections, with or without antiparasitic treatment prior to death. The histological and/or parasitic (fecal samples) examination identified Capillaria aerophila infection in most a

Gastrointestinal parasites as a possible threat to an endangered autochthonous Portuguese sheep breed.

Helminth and protozoan infections are responsible for important diseases in grazing sheep, which can be especially threatening in an autochthonous breed at risk of extinction like the Churra Galega Mirandesa Portuguese sheep breed. The aim of the present study was to determine the diversity, prevalence and burden of gastrointestinal parasites in these sheep and to assess the effects of deworming practices, cohabiting animals on the farm and feed management. Coprological qualitative and quantitative analysis (flotation, natural sedimentation and McMaster method) were used to identify and quanti

Clinical and laboratory characterizations of hepatic capillariasis.

Hepatic capillariasis is a rare and neglected parasitic disease caused by infection with Capillaria hepatica in human liver. The disease is not well described and the information for the disease's clinical manifestation, laboratory findings and disease management strategy is not well reported. The limited information for this neglected infection often results in the delay of diagnosis or misdiagnosed to other diseases, therefore the real prevalence or severity of the infection may be underestimated. More case report with systemic analysis and features summary of this disease is needed to bette

Development of novel associations between MHC alleles and susceptibility to parasitic infections in an isolated population of an endangered mammal.

The role of pathogens in dynamics of endangered species is not fully understood, and the effect of infection often interacts with other processes affecting those species, such as fragmentation and isolation or loss of genetic variation. Small, isolated populations are prone to losing functional alleles due to demographic processes and genetic drift, which may diminish their ability to resist infection if immune genes are affected. Demographic processes may also alter the selective pressure exerted by a parasite, as they influence the rate of parasite transmission between individuals. In the pr

Intestinal parasites of the endangered European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) populations in Slovakia.

The present pilot research was focused on the detection of intestinal parasites in the ground squirrel populations in various regions of Slovakia. Only a very little information is currently available on the parasitic species composition of the European ground squirrel in Slovakia and across Europe. In the Slovak Republic, there are 70 locations where the ground squirrel populations are present. A total of 600 faecal samples of the European ground squirrels, collected from 36 locations all over Slovakia, were examined by applying the coprological method. The presence of the protozoan coccidian
