Cardiovascular function in children born very preterm after intrauterine growth restriction with severely abnormal umbilical artery blood flow.

AIMS: Low birthweight has been linked to increased cardiovascular risk in adulthood. We evaluated the effect on cardiovascular outcome of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) with abnormal fetal blood flow in children born very preterm. METHODS: Blood pressure, cardiac function and size, diameters, distensibility, and stiffness of the abdominal aorta, carotid, and popliteal arteries, and endothelial function were assessed non-invasively in 7-year-old children (n = 32) born very preterm with IUGR, with birthweight (median, range) 650 g (395-976 g) and gestational age 27 weeks (24-29 weeks).

The added value of ECG abnormalities in predicting incident cardiovascular disease risk for people with type 2 diabetes: The Hoorn Diabetes Care System cohort.

AIMS: To investigate if adding ECG abnormalities as a predictor improves the performance of incident CVD-risk prediction models for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: We evaluated the four major prediction models that are recommended by the guidelines of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association and European Society of Cardiology, in 11,224 people with T2D without CVD (coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, thrombosis) from the Hoorn Diabetes Care System cohort (1998-2018). Baseline measurements included CVD-risk factors and ECG recordings coded according

Geometric, Biomechanic and Haemodynamic Aortic Abnormalities Assessed by 4D Flow Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance in Patients Treated by TEVAR Following Blunt Traumatic Thoracic Aortic Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is widely used for the treatment of patients with blunt traumatic thoracic aortic injury (BTAI). However, aortic haemodynamic and biomechanical implications of this intervention are poorly investigated. This study aimed to assess whether patients treated by TEVAR following BTAI have thoracic aortic abnormalities in geometry, stiffness, and haemodynamics. METHODS: Patients with BTAI treated by TEVAR at Vall d'Hebron Hospital between 1999 and 2019 were compared with propensity score matched healthy volunteers (HVs). All subjects underwent c

Automated analysis and detection of abnormalities in transaxial anatomical cardiovascular magnetic resonance images: a proof of concept study with potential to optimize image acquisition.

The large number of available MRI sequences means patients cannot realistically undergo them all, so the range of sequences to be acquired during a scan are protocolled based on clinical details. Adapting this to unexpected findings identified early on in the scan requires experience and vigilance. We investigated whether deep learning of the images acquired in the first few minutes of a scan could provide an automated early alert of abnormal features. Anatomy sequences from 375 CMR scans were used as a training set. From these, we annotated 1500 individual slices and used these to train a con

Incidental Cardiovascular Abnormalities in the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Surveillance Population During the AAA Get Fit Trial: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Background The prevalence of cardiovascular disease and incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) is very high among the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) surveillance population. Formal assessments of and interventions to reduce cardiovascular risk are not a routine part of the surveillance programme at present. However, its potential importance is highlighted by incidental findings during the AAA Get Fit Trial, a randomised controlled trial which included baseline cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). We speculate that CPET can act as an opportunistic screening programme to i

Abnormal coronary vascular response in patients with long COVID syndrome - a case-control study using oxygenation-sensitive cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

BACKGROUND: Following the worldwide coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, many patients reported ongoing severe cardiovascular symptoms after the acute phase. This multisystemic condition has been named long COVID syndrome. While cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is the gold standard to diagnose acute myocardial damage, no specific changes have been shown in long COVID patients. However, endothelial dysfunction has been hypothesized to contribute to its pathogenesis. Oxygenation-sensitive CMR during breathing exercise is a simple, non-invasive, and accurate test to object

Serum potassium abnormalities, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor discontinuation, and clinical outcomes in patients with chronic cardiovascular, metabolic, and renal conditions: A population-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASIs) play a crucial role in the treatment of several chronic cardiovascular conditions. Nonetheless, hyperkalemia, a frequent side effect, often leads to the discontinuation of RAASIs. The implications of hyperkalemia-driven changes in RAASI medications are poorly understood. METHODS: Population-based, observational, retrospective cohort study. Two large healthcare databases were utilized to identify 77,089 individuals aged 55 years and older with chronic conditions who were prescribed RAASIs between 2015 and 2017 in Southern Bar

The relationship between negative psychological state and quality of life among cardiovascular disease patients in China: the masking effect of abnormal dietary behavior.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that abnormal dietary behavior increases the risk for cardiovascular disease especially if the person is depressed and/or anxious. The purpose of this study was to construct a moderated mediation model to explore the roles of abnormal dietary behavior and family health in the mechanism through which depression/anxiety influences Quality of life (QoL) in patients with cardiovascular disease. METHODS: A field survey was conducted in China and ultimately included 730 patients with cardiovascular disease aged 20-60 years. Data were collected using the Europe Quality o

Course of weight gain and metabolic abnormalities in first treated episode of psychosis: the first year is a critical period for development of cardiovascular risk factors.

Data on the long-term metabolic side-effects associated with antipsychotics are scarce. Prospective longitudinal studies in medication-naive patients with a first episode of psychosis are a valuable source of information as they provide an assessment prior to the antipsychotic exposure and minimize the effect of potential confounding factors. The aim of this study was to assess the course of weight gain and the incidence of metabolic abnormalities during the first 3 yr of antipsychotic treatment. Data were collected from a cohort of 170 first-episode psychosis patients. They were randomly assi

Improvement of Symptoms and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Abnormalities in Patients with Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Cardiovascular Syndrome (PASC-CVS) after Guideline-Oriented Therapy.

Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) studies reported CMR abnormalities in patients with mild-moderate SARS-CoV-2 infection, suggesting ongoing myocardial inflammation. Patients (n = 278, 43 ± 13 years, 70.5% female) with post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 cardiovascular syndrome (PASC-CVS) were included prospectively into the Vienna POSTCOV Registry between March 2021 and March 2023 (clinicaltrials.gov NCT05398952). Clinical, laboratory, and CMR findings were recorded. Patients with abnormal CMR results were classified into isolated chronic pericardial (with/without pleural) effusion, isolated car

Depression and bipolar disorder: relationships to impaired fatty acid and phospholipid metabolism and to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, immunological abnormalities, cancer, ageing and osteoporosis. Possible candidate genes.

Depression and bipolar disorder are two of the commonest illnesses in the developed world. While some patients can be treated effectively with available drugs, many do not respond, especially in the depression related to bipolar disorder. Depression is associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, immunological abnormalities, multiple sclerosis, cancer, osteoporosis and ageing: in each case depressed individuals have a worse outcome than non-depressed individuals. In all of these conditions there is now evidence of impaired phospholipid metabolism and impaired fatty acid-related signal tra

The association between kidney function, cognitive function, and structural brain abnormalities in community-dwelling individuals aged 50+ is mediated by age and biomarkers of cardiovascular disease.

AIMS: Cognitive impairment has been associated with kidney function and chronic kidney disease. Whether this association is due to accelerated cardiovascular disease (CVD) or an independent specific kidney function effect related to toxins is unclear. We investigated the impact of an array of clinical factors, inflammatory biomarkers, and cardiovascular biomarkers on the association between kidney function, cognitive function, and structural brain abnormalities. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used data from the first and third waves of the TILDA Study, a population-representative prospective cohort

Abnormal Ankle-Brachial Index and Risk of Cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health concern associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular (CV) and all-cause mortality. The ankle-brachial index (ABI), a noninvasive diagnostic tool, is widely recognized for detecting peripheral arterial disease. This meta-analysis aims to assess whether abnormally low or high ABI values independently predict CV and all-cause mortality in CKD patients, including those on hemodialysis. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines

Structural epicardial disease and microvascular function are determinants of an abnormal longitudinal myocardial blood flow difference in cardiovascular risk individuals as determined with PET/CT.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine whether epicardial structural disease may affect the manifestation of a longitudinal decrease in myocardial blood flow (MBF) or MBF difference during hyperemia in cardiovascular risk individuals, and its dependency on the flow increase. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 54 cardiovascular risk individuals (at risk) and in 26 healthy controls, MBF was measured with (13)N-ammonia and PET/CT in mL/g/min at rest and during dipyridamole stimulation. Computed tomography coronary angiography (CTA) was performed using a 64-slice CT of a PET/CT system. Absolute
