Interventions in consultation-liaison psychiatry: the development of a schema and a checklist for operationalized interventions.

A literature review and pilot investigations reveal that (ward-) management consultation-liaison (C/L) psychiatry recommendations are infrequent and unsystematically used. Furthermore, the communication with the operational group as defined by Meyer and Mendelson is not sufficiently activated. The major focus of the consultation is the first contact, but follow-up is infrequent. With the exception of biologic recommendations and disposition, chart notes by psychiatric consultants do not sufficiently specify the actions to be taken by the ward staff in a general hospital. A schema for the syste

Protocol for implementation of intraoperative adverse event recording during WHO checklist sign-out.

INTRODUCTION & AIM: Intraoperative adverse events (iAEs) increase postoperative complications, which are devastating to patients and costly to healthcare systems. To optimise patient outcomes, the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (WHO SSC) was introduced in 2008, but adherence, especially to its third part (sign-out), is low, and iAEs are currently not routinely assessed. This gap between evidence supporting the use of the WHO SSC, current inconsistent sign-out practice and the lack of standardised reporting of iAEs warrants applying an implementation science approach. Hence, this project aims to

Endonasal surgery high-risk carotid injury timeout checklist: implementation, institutional protocol and experience.

OBJECTIVE: Carotid artery injury is a rare, but major complication of endonasal operations. The morbidity and mortality of such a complication can be mitigated by preparedness and a clear plan set in place to address the hemorrhage expeditiously. This study examines the implementation of such a carotid injury timeout checklist and demonstrates its effectiveness in a patient with possible arterial injury. METHODS: A carotid injury timeout checklist was implemented for high risk endonasal procedures. The case selection was left to the surgeon, with guidelines including prior surgery, prior radi

Post Stroke Outcome: Global Insight into Persisting Sequelae Using the Post Stroke Checklist.

BACKGROUND: Following stroke, individuals commonly experience persisting loss of function. Whilst long-term care should involve continued support for ongoing stroke sequelae, this is often not routinely practiced globally. The Post Stroke Checklist was designed to standardise the process of detecting persisting treatable problems following stroke. AIMS: This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the long-term problems reported in Australian and Chinese participants at six months post stroke using the Post Stroke Checklist. It also aimed to provide global insight into poststroke sequelae by

Preliminary Validation of an Abbreviated Acute Concussion Symptom Checklist Using Item Response Theory.

BACKGROUND: Symptom assessment is a critical component of concussion diagnosis and management, with item selection primarily driven by clinical judgment or expert consensus. We recently demonstrated that concussion symptoms assessed by the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) are essentially unidimensional, implying that overall symptom severity may be accurately estimated with relatively few questions. Briefer, evidence-based forms for symptom assessment would provide clinicians flexibility. PURPOSE: To develop and validate an abbreviated assessment of general concussion symptom severity

Checklist for gene/disease-specific variation database curators to enable ethical data management.

Databases with variant and phenotype information are essential for advancing research and improving the health and welfare of individuals. These resources require data to be collected, curated, and shared among relevant specialties to maximize impact. The increasing generation of data which must be shared both nationally and globally for maximal effect presents important ethical and privacy concerns. Database curators need to ensure that their work conform to acceptable ethical standards. A Working Group of the Human Variome Project had the task of updating and streamlining ethical guidelines

Relevance of World Health Organization surgical safety checklist to trauma and orthopaedic surgery.

Surgery like civil aviation is a risk-prone occupation. Civil Aviation has reported a death rate of less than 1 in a million exposures. On the other hand, surgery has a reported mortality rate of 100 per million surgeries. The National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS) database in England reported 152,017 'incidents' occurred during 4.2 million surgeries in 2008. Trauma and orthopaedic surgery accounted for 32.4 percent of these 'incidents'. Wrong-site surgery occurred in a total of 133 patients, with an incidence of 31.6 per million surgeries. Utility of the Child Behavior Checklist in screening depressive disorders within clinical samples.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies analyzed the clinical validity of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for screening primary depressive disorders (major depression and dysthymia). Other psychiatric disorders with depressive symptomatology (e.g. adjustment disorders with depressive reaction) have not been a research focus to date. This study aims to examine the utility of the CBCL scales Anxious/Depressed and Affective Problems in screening both primary depressive disorders and other disorders with depressive symptomatology. METHODS: The two samples consisted of 1445 outpatients and 698 inpatients

Identifying hypomanic features in major depressive disorder using the hypomania checklist (HCL-32).

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have challenged the traditional unipolar/bipolar divide with increasing support for a more dimensional view of affective disorders. We here examine the occurrence of hypomanic symptoms in individuals with a history of major depression selected to exclude indicators of underlying bipolarity. METHODS: The presence of hypomanic symptoms was assessed by the Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) self-report questionnaire in a sample of almost 600 patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for Bipolar I disorder (BPI N=260) or Major Recurrent Depressive disorder (MDDR N=322).
