Adherence to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Gonococcal Treatment Guidelines Among Chicago Health Care Providers, 2011-2012.

BACKGROUND: Expansion of antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae requires rapid adaptation of treatment guidelines and responsive provider practice. We evaluated patient factors associated with provider adherence to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gonococcal treatment recommendations among Chicago providers in 2011 to 2012. METHODS: Laboratory-confirmed cases of uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhea were classified via surveillance data as originating from Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) or non-CDPH providers. Recommended treatment was determined according to

Diabetes and pancreatic cancer. Highlights from the "2011 ASCO Annual Meeting". Chicago, IL, USA; June 3-7, 2011.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Risk factors for pancreatic cancer are smoking, family history, chronic pancreatitis, and diabetes. There is controversy with regards to the causal relationship between diabetes and pancreatic cancer because many patients with pancreatic cancer have new onset diabetes. Abstracts presented at the 2011 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting highlighted and supported the positive association between pancreatic cancer and diabetes. Abstract #4102 reports a two-fold risk of pancreatic cancer in

Temsirolimus has activity in non-mantle cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma subtypes: The University of Chicago phase II consortium.

PURPOSE: Despite high initial remission rates, most lymphomas relapse and require further therapy. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is a validated target in mantle cell lymphoma, but has not been extensively evaluated in other lymphomas. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a phase II trial of single-agent temsirolimus 25-mg weekly in patients with relapsed aggressive and indolent lymphomas. The primary objective was overall and complete response rate. Patients were stratified by histology: group A (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, transformed follicular lymphoma), group B (follic

A multi-level community-based systems dynamic approach to advance equitable adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Chicago.

BACKGROUND: Teenage pregnancy in the United States (U.S) continues to be a serious public health concern, despite the significant declines in birth rates documented over the last three decades. Risk factors leading to teen pregnancy go far beyond individual-level behavior, like engaging in risky sexual behaviors, and can be linked to a web of interconnected ecological influences outside of an adolescent's proximal locus of control. Individual behaviors, interpersonal relationships, community environments, and structural conditions interact in complex ways to shape adolescents' sexual and repro

Ineffective Esophageal Motility Defined by Chicago Classification v4.0 Identifies a Clinically and Endoscopically Relevant Phenotype in Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

BACKGROUNDS: Esophageal motility abnormalities may contribute to symptoms in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), but most available evidence is based on Chicago Classification version 3.0 (CCv3.0). AIM: We evaluated the prevalence and clinical relevance of motility disorders defined according to CCv4.0 in patients with EoE. METHODS: We retrospectively included consecutive untreated patients with EoE who underwent upper endoscopy and high-resolution manometry at four Italian tertiary centers between 2016 and 2024. Manometric tracings were reanalyzed according to both CCv3.0 and CCv4.0. Associatio

The Relationship Between Zoning Policies, Racialized Economic Segregation and Life Expectancy Across Census Tracts in Chicago, 2010-2015.

INTRODUCTION: Racial segregation is a recognized cause of racial health disparities. One factor that has contributed to racial segregation is municipal zoning policies that exclude people of color and those of low income from advantaged residential neighborhoods. Few studies have explicitly explored the relationship between zoning policies and health. Using data on zoning policies in Chicago in 1923 and 2012, we examined inequities in life expectancy across census tracts in relation to the proportion of land in each tract zoned for specific purposes. METHODS: For each Chicago census tract, we

No one is immune: neighborhood trends and disparities in air pollution exposure in the city of Chicago during summer 2023 wildfires.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, Chicago experienced unprecedented levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) caused by the long-range transport of wildfire smoke (WFS). OBJECTIVE: Examine how time trends in WFS-related fine PM2.5 varied across regions of the city with varied demographic, socio-economic, and health profiles. METHODS: The City of Chicago includes 792 census tracts grouped into nine regions. Hourly PM2.5 concentrations estimated on 500-m grids across the city (May 1-July 31, 2023) were used to calculate daily 24-h average PM2.5 levels at the tract level. To compare across city regions, int

Recovery and Response: Responding to Mental Health Needs That Emerged in the Wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Chicago Public Schools.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic elevated mental health needs among students. As such, in 2022 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) introduced the Comprehensive Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Policy to deliver mental health awareness and services to all pK-12th grade students. While transitioning back to in-person learning, an evaluation was conducted in the 2022-2023 school year to identify current practices and barriers of delivery, and identify lessons learned to support the policy in schools. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 30 staff members who delivered mental health services. Int

The nexus between neighborhood socioeconomic environment and substance-positive driving behavior: A spatial analysis in the Chicago metropolitan area.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous public health and transportation studies have established a strong link between low-socioeconomic status and impaired driving. However, few analyze how a neighborhood's socioeconomic environment influences individual driving behavior. METHOD: To address this gap, we conducted a spatial econometric analysis at the neighborhood level, assessing the impact of socioeconomic conditions on alcohol and psychoactive drug-related crashes within zip code areas that are neighbored to each other. We merged hospital and crash data to create a dataset of drivers involved in substance

Moderating Effects of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit on Associations Between Race and Elevated Blood Pressure in Chicago.

While there is growing awareness of discriminatory housing policies and their adverse impacts on health, little is known about how housing policy may promote health equity. We focused on the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), the largest affordable housing program in the United States, and examined how living in neighborhoods with LIHTC housing may moderate associations between elevated blood pressure and race/ethnicity in Chicago, IL. A retrospective cohort included 15,339 adult patients at an academic medical center from 2018 to 2019. We used mixed-effects hierarchal logistic regression

Association of Tailpipe-Related and Nontailpipe-Related Air Pollution Exposure with Cognitive Decline in the Chicago Health and Aging Project.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that long-term exposure to air pollution may increase the risk of dementia and related cognitive outcomes. A major source of air pollution is automotive traffic, which is modifiable by technological and regulatory interventions. OBJECTIVES: We examined associations of four traffic-related air pollutants with rates of cognitive decline in a cohort of older adults. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP), a longitudinal (1993-2012) community-based cohort study of older adults that included repeated assessments of participants' co

A qualitative study of Chicago gay men and the Mpox outbreak of 2022 in the context of HIV/AIDS, PrEP, and COVID-19.

During the 2022 mpox outbreak, our study conducted 30 interviews with a recruited sample of Chicago gay men (age 18+) during June-September to investigate their experiences of mpox, HIV/AIDS, and COVID-19. Participants were interviewed with a semi-structured guide about gay sexual identity and social experiences; HIV/AIDS, ART, and PrEP; and COVID-19 behaviors and vaccination. All 30 interview respondents had been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and expressed minimal COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. All the men living with HIV in our study were on ART with HIV well controlled. A majority of HIV- part

Factors Related to the Rise of Congenital Syphilis From the Perspectives of Prenatal Providers and Birthing Parents in Chicago, IL, USA.

BACKGROUND: Rates of congenital syphilis (CS) in the United States have risen sharply in recent years. There has been sparse research centering the voices and experiences of birthing parents who have delivered infants with CS and prenatal providers in Chicago or the surrounding Midwestern United States to date. Additionally, there has been little research on the role of extrinsic factors, such as stigma and attitudes surrounding CS in an individual's community, in their entry into and retention in the CS prevention cascade. METHODS: Semistructured interviews seeking to gather perspectives and

Upper Esophageal Sphincter Motility and Thoracic Pressure are Determinants of Pressurized Waves in Achalasia Subtypes According to the Chicago Classification.

BACKGROUND: Phenotypes of achalasia are based on esophageal body pressurization during swallow. The reasons that lead to pressurized waves are still unclear. This study aims to evaluate manometric parameters that may determine pressurized waves in patients with achalasia. METHODS: A total of 100 achalasia high-resolution manometry tests were reviewed. We measured before each swallow: upper esophageal sphincter (UES) basal pressure, esophageal length, lower esophageal sphincter (LES) basal pressure, LES length, gastric and thoracic pressure, transdiaphragmatic pressure gradient and the LES ret
