Previous research has shown that child-oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorders (CD) are associated with parental symptoms of depression, anxiety and/or stress, probably in a bidirectional relationship with mutual influences. It is, therefore, reasonable to assume that in child-centered treatment, a decrease in child-oppositional behavior problems constitutes (at least in part) a mechanism of change for a subsequent reduction in parental psychopathology. The aim of the present study (Clinical trials.gov Identifier: NCT01406067) was to examine whether the reduction in ODD sympt

BACKGROUND: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) co-occurring with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) further present aggressive behavior and may have a depressive parent. A child with co-occurring ADHD and ODD has differentially higher levels of behavioral and emotional difficulties. Little is known about how the irritable subtype of ADHD in children mediates the development of parental symptomatology. This study aims to elucidate the direct or indirect influence of childhood disruptive ADHD with aggressive behavior on their parental symptom using Structural Equation

Current evidence-based treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder in children and adolescents include cognitive-behavioral therapy, specifically exposure and response prevention, and psychopharmacological treatments. Despite the established efficacy of these treatments, many youth do not benefit from them, and barriers, including lack of motivation and resistance to treatment, prevent many youth from even attempting them. Parent-based treatments offer an alternative approach to child-based therapy. SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is a parent-based treatment that f

INTRODUCTION: A wide range of psychiatric disorders are common in young children, especially in those at high risk because of a parent with a unipolar or bipolar mood disorder in the United States. Yet in part because most children are seen in primary care, these illnesses are often not recognized or treated in a timely fashion. To begin to address this problem, we started the Child Network.
METHODS: The Child Network is for parents of children age 2-12 with mood or behavioral symptoms or at high risk for them. The parents rate the severity of symptoms of depression, anxiety, attention-defici

INTRODUCTION: The processing of sensory information determines the development and growth of a child's abilities. Dysfunction in the processing of sensory stimuli can affect a child's behavior and can disrupt development. Sensory Regulation Disorders are frequently associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with the DSM-5 even including it as a diagnostic criterion. However, they are also observed in other neurodevelopmental disorders. At present, the frequency of Sensory Regulation Disorders in children consulting child psychiatry has never been evaluated, although it seems to be a popul

This paper reviews the recent research literature on childhood eating disorders from a developmental perspective. Although there have been some recent advances in research, much work remains to be done, especially studies specific to child and adolescent eating disorders, as well as definitive follow-up studies. Few data are available on the normal development of eating behavior, or resilience and risk factors for eating pathology. The best-studied areas include epidemiological studies, short-term treatment for bulimia nervosa, and outcome in anorexia nervosa.

This study investigated the phenomenology and clinical correlates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in youth with ASD (N = 102; range 7-16 years). The presence of suicidal thoughts and behavior was assessed through the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule-Child and Parent Versions. Children and parents completed measures of anxiety severity, functional impairment, and behavioral and emotional problems. Approximately 11 % of youth displayed suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Children with autism were more likely to have suicidal thoughts and behaviors whereas children with Asperger's disorder we

BACKGROUND: Executive functions (EFs) are a set of neuropsychological skills permitting solving problems in a new situation by regulating action, behavior, and emotional response. As cerebral maturation remains vulnerable in preterm children, a higher risk of developing cognitive disorders including EFs exist compared to term children.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of preschool EF impairments through proxy reports in children born preterm before 34 weeks of gestational age using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Preschool (BRIEF-P) version. Second

Objective Within the social determinants of mental health framework, this article investigated whether children with ASD who have older siblings are less likely to experience depression, anxiety, behavior problems or have ADD/ADHD after controlling for standard social determinants of mental health such as household income, parental education and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Methods Using the National Survey of Children's Health 2011-2012, children with ASD spectrum disorders (n = 1624) were categorized into three groups: only child, oldest child and has older siblings. Disruptive behaviors are a class of predominantly externalizing behaviors that include physical aggression, property destruction, temper outbursts, verbal aggression, and some forms of self-injurious behaviors. Externalizing behaviors are also major components of disruptive, impulse-control and conduct disorders, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, trauma-related and stressor-related disorders, intermittent explosive disorder, personality disorders, and other neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Disruptive behaviors and associated disorders are among the most frequent reasons

PURPOSE: This study explores the relationship among preschool attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), injury-risk-taking behavior, and unintentional injury.
METHOD: An emergency department (ED) casecontrol study of parent-reported child behavior was conducted.
FINDINGS: Children with ODD and ADHD had significantly more injury-risk-taking behaviors (odds ratio [OR] = 7.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.25-26.25; OR = 4.87, 95% CI 1.17--20.28, respectively), and injured children had a 17-fold increase in high-risk-taking behaviors (OR 17.2, 95% CI

UNLABELLED: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common behavioral problem in children. Multiple risk factors, including prenatal substance exposure, have been associated with this disorder.
OBJECTIVES: We determined (1) the rate of ADHD in children with prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) as compared to those non-exposed, (2) the association of ADHD with the infant's sex, race, and birth weight, maternal age and education, and other known risk factors, and factors that may mediate the relationship between these risk factors and ADHD.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis

Parents of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) often have elevated ADHD and depressive symptoms, both of which increase the risk of ineffective parenting and interparental discord. However, little is known about whether child ADHD/ODD behavior and parent ADHD or depressive symptoms uniquely or synergistically predict the quality of parenting and interparental communication during triadic (mother-father-child) interactions. Ninety parent couples, including 51 who have children diagnosed with ADHD, were randomly assigned to intera

The coercive process is the primary explanatory mechanism implicated in the maintenance of disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs), and understanding the coercive cycle may be especially important for caregivers with children with elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits. The purpose of the current pilot study is twofold. First, we assessed whether the Summer Treatment Program (STP), an established intensive behavioral intervention for children with DBDs, reduced coercive caregiver-child interactions using a novel parent-report measure of coercive interactions. We then sought to assess whether th

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder of childhood onset characterized by vocal and motor tics and associated psychopathologies. The current study was undertaken to explore the associations between tic symptomatology, related clinical variables and behavioral dysfunction within a cohort of TS subjects. Ninety-two child and adolescent TS subjects were rated through self-measure, and by parents on measures of tic symptomatology, OC characteristics, and dysfunctional behaviors including learning difficulties and attention deficits. Statistical modeling revealed associations among

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin, cortisol, and testosterone are involved in the processing of reward and stress and greatly influence mother-child interactions. Altered hormonal systems have been associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD), a disorder characterized by interpersonal deficits. Mothers with BPD tend to perceive interactions with the child as less rewarding and more stressful and interactions are often less reciprocal and have more negative states (i.e. constricted, tense, uncoordinated behaviors). Their children are at elevated risk for psychopathologies. Here, we studied underlyi

Studies of children with ADHD consistently document high rates of comorbid psychiatric conditions, including conduct disorders, depression and other mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and tic disorders. In diagnosing children with ADHD, one must be careful not to dismiss other symptomatology as secondary. Poor social skills, problems with parents, low academic functioning, and other correlates of ADHD can be construed as causal factors. Although these should not be ignored, neither should the possibility that a child suffers from another psychiatric disorder that might respond to appropriate p

OBJECTIVE: Although combination pharmacotherapy is common in child and adolescent psychiatry, there has been little research evaluating it. The value of adding risperidone to concurrent psychostimulant and parent training (PT) in behavior management for children with severe aggression was tested.
METHOD: One hundred sixty-eight children 6 to 12 years old (mean age 8.89 ± 2.01 years) with severe physical aggression were randomized to a 9-week trial of PT, stimulant (STIM), and placebo (Basic treatment; n = 84) or PT, STIM, and risperidone (Augmented treatment; n = 84). OBJECTIVE: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), resulting from maternal alcohol use during pregnancy, are associated with significant academic and behavior problems. Although affected children are common in clinical practice, information to guide recommendations about interventions with this high risk group is very limited. This study evaluated the persistence of effects of an intervention on the math performance and behavior of 54 children, 3- to 10-years, diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome or FASD.
METHODS: Children were randomly assigned to a 6-week Math intervention (n = 28) tailor

The Preschool Feelings Checklist (PFC) is a 16-item parent report measure of depressive symptoms in young children. However, data on its reliability and validity are limited. We examined the internal consistency and convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity of the PFC in an unselected community sample of 490 3-year old children. Child psychopathology was assessed using semi-structured diagnostic interviews conducted with a parent at ages 3 and 6 (the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment) and with the child and a parent at ages 9, 12, and 15 (the Kiddie Schedule for the Affective Disord
