Salmonella pathogenesis-based In-silico design and immunoinformatic analysis of multi-epitope vaccine constructs in broiler veterinary medicine.

Salmonellosis, a zoonotic gastrointestinal disease, presents a significant global health burden with a high incidence rate. Transmission primarily occurs through the consumption of contaminated poultry products, although water and contact with asymptomatic animals are also vectors. The disease's pervasiveness has prompted international health organizations to advocate for robust prevention and control strategies. This study focuses on the in-silico design of a multi-epitope vaccine targeting Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium's fimH protein, a fimbriae component crucial for bacterial adhe

Temperature responsive sustained-release microsphere for harmful algal bloom control: preparation, algicidal activity and eco-safety.

Temperature is one of the most important factors driving cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs). However, existing algicide designs rarely consider the influence of temperature on algal growth. Novel temperature-responsive sustained-release microspheres (T-SRMs) of anti-algal 5,4'-dihydroxyflavone (DHF) were designed using n-heptadecane as the temperature-responsive material, which can adjust DHF release behavior in response to temperature. Compared to DHF direct application, T-SRMs showed higher inhibition rates against Microcystis aeruginosa and sustained inhibitory activity at various

Quaternary biopesticides and disinfectants derived from quinine and amino acids - environmental prospects and risks.

The numerous risks associated with the toxicity of conventional quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) to various groups of living organisms have prompted the search for new, safer biologically active compounds synthesized in a sustainable manner from renewable raw materials. Here, we describe new QASs of natural origin containing quinine-based cation and anions derived from proteinogenic amino acids - l-asparagine and l-alanine. The quinine-derived QASs were thoroughly characterized in terms of correctness of chemical structure, physicochemical properties, and biological activity. It was discovered

Microalgae: A promising strategy for aflatoxin control in poultry feeds.

Aflatoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain molds, primarily Aspergillus species, which can contaminate crops such as grains and nuts. These toxins pose a significant health risk to animals and humans. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most potent of these compounds and has been well-characterized to lead to diminished growth and feed efficiency by disrupting nutrient absorption and metabolism in poultry. AFB1 can trigger apoptosis and inflammation, leading to a decline in immune function and changes in blood biochemistry in poultry. Recently, there has been growing interest in using microalga

Differences in Engineered Nanoparticle Surface Physicochemistry Revealed by Investigation of Changes in Copper Bioavailability During Sorption to Nanoparticles in the Aqueous Phase.

Sorption of chemical substances to nanoparticles (NPs) in the aqueous phase strongly influences NP physicochemisty, and investigations of these complex interactions can provide important insights into the environmental fate of NPs. The objective of the present study was to use differences in copper (Cu) bioavailability to investigate aqueous-phase sorption with NPs that had different physicochemical characteristics (silicon [Si], perovskite, and titanium dioxide NPs [TiO2 NPs]). Sorption of Cu with NPs was assessed by the presence of adsorbent in water and onto the NP surface after ultracentri

Bacteria-algae synergy in carbon sequestration: Molecular mechanisms, ecological dynamics, and biotechnological innovations.

Rising atmospheric CO₂ levels require innovative strategies to increase carbon sequestration. Bacteria-algae interactions, as pivotal yet underexplored drivers of marine and freshwater carbon sinks, involve multiple mechanisms that amplify CO₂ fixation and long-term storage. This review systematically describes the synergistic effects of bacteria-algae consortia spanning both microalgae (e.g., Chlorella vulgaris and Phaeodactylum tricornutum) and macroalgae (e.g., Macrocystis and Laminaria) on carbon sequestration. These effects include (1) molecular-level regulation (e.g., signal transduction

Purification and characterisation of an intracellular carbonic anhydrase from the unicellular green alga Coccomyxa.

An intracellular carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1) was purified and characterised from the unicellular green alga Coccomyxa sp. Initial studies showed that cultured Coccomyxa cells contain an intracellular CA activity around 100 times higher than that measured in high-CO2-grown cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii CW 92. Purification of a protein extract containing the CA activity was carried out using ammonium-sulphate precipitation followed by anion-exchange chromatography. Proteins were then separated by native (non-dissociating) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, with each individual prot

[Increased immune response in broilers after administration of natural food supplements].

The trial involved broilers from the 4th to the 56th day of life. The first group P1 (n = 30) received commercial mashes with supplements of 0.5% biomass of freshwater algae (Chlorella vulgaris). The second group P2 (n = 30) received 0.9% dried cow's colostrum and 0.9% dried brewer's yeasts in addition to the algae (0.2%). All the ingredients came from fluid-bed drying at temperatures maximally 50 degrees C. Control group K (n = 30) consisted of broilers which received commercial mashes only. At the age of 21, 33 and 56 days, 10 birds of each group were killed, and basic hematological values w

Enhancing ocean alkalinity and CO2 sequestration via microalgae-driven carbonate precipitation and biomimetic catalysis.

Microalgae-induced carbonate precipitation (MAICP) offers a promising approach for CO2 capture and ocean alkalinity enhancement, but its efficiency in seawater is limited by the slow hydration of CO2, resulting low production of bicarbonate (HCO3-), and reduces algal growth and carbonate (CaCO3) mineralization. In this study, a bio-hybrid biomimetic-MAICP system was developed that integrates the microalga Chlorella vulgaris with carbonic anhydrase-functionalized Zn-based metal-organic framework-5 (CA@fZnMOF-5), encapsulated in alginate beads, to accelerate CO2 hydration and MAICP mineralizatio

Application of microcosms in research on the impact of PPCP´s on the aquatic environment.

The occurrence of emergent pollutants (include e.g. persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceuticals and personal care products - PPCP´s, surfactants, microplastics and other) in the environment is increasing. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products include, for example, skin cosmetics, toothpastes, perfumes and fragrances, pharmaceutical and veterinary medicines, other health and cosmetic personal care products. Most of these products serve to improve the quality of everyday life, but even at low regular doses they can cause various effects on the environment. The main component of many phar

Investigation of Amphiphilic PDMS-Hyperbranched Polyglycerol Copolymers to Tune the Fouling-Release Properties in a Moisture Curable Coating System.

Hyperbranched polyglycerol (HBPG) has been proven to be effective as a hydrophilic material when incorporated into amphiphilic copolymers, enhancing fouling-release properties. These amphiphilic polymers not only increase the effectiveness of coatings across a wide range of organisms but also impart antifouling characteristics without resorting to toxic chemicals. HBPGs exhibit high resistance to proteins and lead to the effective removal of marine organisms under low impact pressures. To enhance the effectiveness of HBPGs and facilitate polymer stratification onto the coating surface, copolym

Toxicological impact of cadmium-based quantum dots towards aquatic biota: Effect of natural sunlight exposure.

Cadmium-based quantum dots (QDs) are increasingly applied in existent and emerging technologies, especially in biological applications due to their exceptional photophysical and functionalization properties. However, they are very toxic compounds due to the high reactive and toxic cadmium core. The present study aimed to determine the toxicity of three different QDs (CdS 380, CdS 480 and CdSeS/ZnS) before and after the exposure of suspensions to sunlight, in order to assess the effect of environmentally relevant irradiation levels in their toxicity, which will act after their release to the en

A multistage micro-nano biosystem prevents sepsis-associated encephalopathy through coordinated neuroinflammation suppression and gut-brain axis modulation.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a severe neurological complication of sepsis, for which current therapeutic options remain limited. There is an urgent need for innovative strategies that simultaneously target both central and peripheral pathophysiological mechanisms. In this study, we developed a microalgae-nanoparticle multistage biosystem, CV@MT-NPs, by electrostatically assembling melatonin-loaded, quaternary chitosan-modified liposomes (MT-NPs) onto Chlorella vulgaris (CV) microalgae. The resulting CV@MT-NPs enabled sustained melatonin release and significantly prolonged systemic

Use of rotating membranes for air-to-liquid mass transfer of carbon dioxide to enhance algal growth.

A novel air-to-liquid mass transfer system using wetted rotating membranes was designed to enhance air-to-liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) mass transfer efficiency. Traditional methods, such as sparging, are energy-intensive, but the rotating membrane reduces energy demands by optimising membrane wetting via rotational motion. Experimental tests were conducted using a small-scale system with a membrane width of 0.64 m and loop size of 2 to 5 m, with rotational speeds between 0.0 and 0.78 m/s. CO2 flux increased by up to 45%, achieving maximum uptake rate of 9.14 mg CO2/min/m2 at 100% speed. An empi

Algal community composition drives lake greenhouse gas emissions via dissolved organic matter transformation and microbial processing.

Lakes are important sources of greenhouse gases, yet bloom-driven emissions are often assessed from total algal biomass, ignoring algal functional composition. This study examined how cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa), green algae (Chlorella vulgaris), diatoms (Cyclotella meneghiniana), and dominance-based mixtures regulate DOM transformation and CO2/N2O production under eutrophic conditions. It integrated to pure-culture experiments, water-sediment microcosms, sterilization controls, DOM fluorescence spectroscopy, gas monitoring, and metagenomics to resolve an algae-DOM-microbe-gas casca
