Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) resistant to degradation have significant environmental impacts. Anaerobic reductive debromination and aerobic oxidation of PBDEs by microorganisms are main removal mechanisms during natural attenuation, but previous studies often focused on the process under either aerobic or anaerobic condition leading to unsatisfactory removal. The present study aims to remove PBDEs by employing alternating anaerobic-aerobic condition, which is common in inter-tidal mangrove sediments, and elucidate the degradation pathways. During 40-week experiment, BDE-47 reduced wi

Oxygen-sensitive Dehalococcoides bacteria play crucial roles in detoxification of chlorinated contaminants (e.g., chlorinated ethenes), and bioremediation monitoring relies on quantification of Dehalococcoides DNA and RNA biomarkers. To explore the effects of oxygen on Dehalococcoides activity, viability, and biomarker quantification, batch experiments with a tetrachloroethene-to-ethene dechlorinating consortium (Bio-Dechlor INOCULUM [BDI]) harboring multiple Dehalococcoides strains were performed to quantify the effects of < or = 4 mg/L dissolved oxygen. Oxygen inhibited reductive dechlorinat

Cadmium (Cd(II)) contamination threatens agricultural systems and the safety of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. While beneficial microbes can alleviate Cd(II) stress in plants, the synergistic mechanisms underlying microbial co-inoculation in medicinal plant species remain unclear. This study investigated the individual and combined effects of Rhodopseudomonas palustris and Bacillus subtilis on Forsythia suspensa under Cd(II) stressed. The results showed that co-inoculation achieved markedly better effects than single-strain inoculation. Specifically, the HRB treatment enhanced plant heig

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonizes the vaginal and rectal mucosa in a substantial proportion of healthy women, and GBS is a risk factor for GBS-associated adverse birth outcomes, such as bacterial infection, in neonates. Whether changes in the gut microbiota of GBS-infected pregnant women are associated with maternal complete blood cell count (CBC) and neonatal blood-gas analysis is unknown. To explore the relationship between the intestinal microecological composition of pregnant women and maternal blood routine and neonatal blood-gas analysis, we collected intestinal microecology samples

The genomes of two closely related Dehalobacter strains (strain CF and strain DCA) were assembled from the metagenome of an anaerobic enrichment culture that reductively dechlorinates chloroform (CF), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) and 1,1-dichloroethane (1,1-DCA). The 3.1 Mbp genomes of strain CF (that dechlorinates CF and 1,1,1-TCA) and strain DCA (that dechlorinates 1,1-DCA) each contain 17 putative reductive dehalogenase homologous (rdh) genes. These two genomes were systematically compared to three other available organohalide-respiring Dehalobacter genomes (Dehalobacter restrictus str

Irrational application of chemical fertilizers causes soil nutrient imbalance, reduced microbial diversity, soil diseases, and other soil quality problems and is one of the main sources of non-point pollution. The application of microbial inoculant (MI) can improve the soil environment and crop growth to reduce problems caused by irrational application of chemical fertilizers. Field experiments were carried out in high-phosphorus soils to study the effects of the addition of various MIs combined with chemical fertilizers on soil properties, wheat growth, and soil microbial composition and stru

Bioremediation of chlorinated ethenes via anaerobic reductive dechlorination relies upon the activity of specific microbial populations--most notably Dehalococcoides (DHC) strains. In the lab and field Dehalococcoides grow most robustly in mixed communities which usually contain both fermenters and methanogens. Recently, researchers have been developing quantitative molecular biomarkers to aid in field site diagnostics and it is hoped that these biomarkers could aid in the modeling of anaerobic reductive dechlorination. A comprehensive biokinetic model of a community containing Dehalococcoides

A microbial culture derived from a landfill site in Dover, DE consistently reduced trichloroethene (TCE) to ethene through 1,1-dichloroethene (DCE) as a dominant intermediate in the presence of ampicillin. A constant 1,1-DCE-to-cis-DCE ratio of 2.4 +/- 0.3 was observed for more than two years, while trans-DCE was never detected. Without ampicillin, however, TCE was reduced to ethene almost exclusively through cis-DCE, suggesting that the culture contained at leasttwo TCE-dechlorinating populations. Two subcultures, which were established using 1,1-DCE or vinyl chloride as an electron acceptor,

Bauxite mining causes severe soil degradation in the ecologically fragile karst region of Southwest China, yet targeted vegetation restoration schemes remain poorly developed. This study aimed to screen promising selected restoration species and preliminarily explore their soil improvement characteristics in karst bauxite mine wastelands through a field observational survey. We investigated six vegetation-soil conditions at 0-10 cm topsoil (two-year monocultures of Robinia pseudoacacia, Ligustrum lucidum, Zea mays, Miscanthus sinensis, topsoil from >15-year Z. mays with straw return, and unveg

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation, fibrosis, and multi-organ involvement. Traditional botanical drugs have long been used empirically to manage fibrotic and inflammatory conditions, yet their pharmacological effects remain incompletely understood.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an aqueous extract of safflower on fibrotic and inflammatory phenotypes, gut microbiota composition, and fecal metabolic profiles in a bleomycin-induced murine model of systemic sclerosis.
METHODS: A murine model of sy

Soil-borne diseases of tobacco roots and stems, caused by pathogens including Ralstonia solanacearum (bacterial wilt), Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae (black shank), and root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), represent critical threats to tobacco cultivation. However, information regarding alterations in rhizosphere soil properties and microbial communities following co-infection by multiple soil-borne pathogens remains limited for tobacco-growing regions in Luxi County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. This study therefore investigated rhizosphere soils collected from healt

BACKGROUND: Intercropping increases land use efficiency and farmland ecological diversity. However, little is understood about whether and how soil biota, metabolites, and nutrients change under interspecific competition among plants. Thus, this study aimed to explore the changes in the physicochemical properties, microbial communities, and metabolites of rhizosphere and bulk soils of pepper monocropping and pepper-maize intercropping systems.
RESULTS: Intercropping significantly increased the contents of available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK), and decreased the pH value, wher

High-yielding dairy cows suffer from a high metabolic load and oxidative stress, which lead to systemic inflammation and metabolic disorders, increasing the susceptibility of these cows to various production diseases. Dihydromyricetin (DMY) has demonstrated potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory physiological functions; however, research into its application in ruminants remains limited. This study investigated whether DMY supplementation is associated with the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis through the regulation of gut microbiota and metabolite profiles. A total of 14 mid-lactation H

Tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) are common groundwater contaminants that also impact tidal flats, especially near urban and industrial areas. However, very little is known about dechlorinating microbial communities in tidal flats. Titanium pyrosequencing, 16S rRNA gene clone libraries, and dechlorinator-targeted quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) characterized reductive dechlorinating activities and populations in tidal flat sediments collected from South Korea's central west coast near Kangwha. In microcosms established with surface sediments, PCE dechlorination to TCE began

A continuous-flow anaerobic column experiment was conducted to evaluate the reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (PCE) in Hanford aquifer material after bioaugmentation with the Evanite (EV) culture. An influent PCE concentration of 0.09 mM was transformed to vinyl chloride (VC) and ethene (ETH) within a hydraulic residence time of 1.3 days. The experimental breakthrough curves were described by the one-dimensional two-site-nonequilibrium transport model. PCE dechlorination was observed after bioaugmentation and after the lactate concentration was increased from 0.35 to 0.67 mM. At th

Dehalococcoides ethenogenes is the only bacterium known to reductively dechlorinate the groundwater pollutants, tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene, to ethene. Its 1,469,720-base pair chromosome contains large dynamic duplicated regions and integrated elements. Genes encoding 17 putative reductive dehalogenases, nearly all of which were adjacent to genes for transcription regulators, and five hydrogenase complexes were identified. These findings, plus a limited repertoire of other metabolic modes, indicate that D. ethenogenes is highly evolved to utilize halogenated organic compounds a

Previous studies have shown that Dehalococcoides species are responsible for the anaerobic bioremediation of chloroethene pollution. It has been thought that co-operation of several species is required for complete dechlorination to ethene. In the present study, we used quantitative PCR of 16 S rRNA and RDase (reductive dehalogenase) genes to examine species changes and the population of Dehalococcoides species in ground water in which the dechlorination of TCE (trichloroethene) to ethene was enhanced by delivery of hydrogen-releasing compounds. The results have shown that at least two differe

Serine is crucial for maintaining proper immune system function in both humans and animals. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary serine supplementation on microbial interactions and intestinal immunity in weaned piglets. In Exp. 1, a total of 35 weaned piglets (age 21 d, initial body weight [BW] 7.01 ± 0.07 kg, n = 7) were allocated to five dietary treatments for 42 d, a basal diet with no serine and supplemented with 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, or 1.00% serine. The results showed that supplementation with 1.00% serine in the diet increased final BW and significantly elevated serum
