Choroidal Neovascularization in Torpedo Maculopathy Assessed on Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

Torpedo maculopathy is characterized by a congenital, unilateral, and torpedo-shaped chorioretinal lesion with unclear pathogenesis and evolution. Although the optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) characteristics have already been defined in literature, the authors describe for the first time the presence of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) on the temporal edge of this lesion in a 36-year-old woman with a history of altered visual field in her left eye. The authors' investigation supports the hypothesis of an aberrant choroidal circulation underlying the pathogenesis of this condi

Understanding the determinants of myopic choroidal neovascularization and response to treatment.

PURPOSE: The pathophysiologic pathways that govern the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) are complex. Patchy atrophy and lacquer cracks are known to be major anatomic risk factors for the development of myopic CNV, but they are not alone and much remains to be understood about other factors that influence development. In addition, a greater understanding of the modifiable and nonmodifiable factors that influence outcome, resolution, and recurrence after intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) could lead to more personalized treatment algorithms

Intravitreal bevacizumab for treatment of choroidal neovascularization associated with osteogenesis imperfecta.

A 12-year-old girl, diagnosed of osteogenesis imperfecta, presented with sudden visual loss in the left eye. Investigations revealed an active choroidal neovascular membrane. She underwent treatment with intravitreal Bevacizumab (1.25 mg/0.05 ml). Follow-up at 1 month revealed the development of lacquer crack running through the macula, underlying the fovea. The patient received two re-treatments at 1-month intervals, following which the choroidal neovascularization (CNV) regressed completely. However, further progression of lacquer cracks was noted. At the last follow-up, 6 months following t

Macrophage depletion diminishes lesion size and severity in experimental choroidal neovascularization.

PURPOSE: Macrophage recruitment to the choroid has been proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in AMD. The study was conducted to determine whether treatment with clodronate liposomes (CL(2)MDP-lip), which cause depletion of blood monocytes and lymph node macrophages, diminishes the severity of neovascularization in a mouse model of laser-induced CNV. METHODS: Laser-induced CNV was performed in female 16-month-old C57BL/6 mice. Macrophages were depleted by use of CL(2)MDP-lip intraperitoneally and subcutaneously 72 and 24 hours before and every 2 to 3

Corticosteroids as an antiangiogenic agent for histoplasmosis-related subfoveal choroidal neovascularization.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of corticosteroids in managing subfoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to the presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome. The cases of eighteen patients with histoplasmosis-related subfoveal CNV treated with corticosteroids were reviewed. Ten patients received oral prednisone for 4 to 6 weeks, and eight received a single sub-Tenon's injection of triamcinalone. Visual acuity outcomes were analyzed along with side effect profiles. At two-week follow-up, the prednisone group showed a median improvement in Snellen visual acuity of +2.0

[Vascular endothelial growth factor promotes experimental choroidal neovascularization in monkey eyes].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on experimental choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in monkey eyes through clinical, morphometric, and histological observations. METHOD: CNV was induced in both eyes of 6 rhesus monkeys by intense photocoagulation by red krypton laser. Immediately after photocoagulation, 2.5 micrograms of exogenous human VEGF was injected into the vitreous of the left eye in each animal. The right eyes served as controls. The eyes were enucleated 3 days to 12 weeks after photocoagulation and were examined by light and electron micros

[Indocyanine green angiography of choroidal neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration].

One hundred forty eyes with choroidal neovascularization (ChNV) in age-related macular degeneration were examined with fluorescein and indocyanine green (ICG) angiography. ChNVs covered with subretinal hemorrhage, and ChNVs with retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) detachment were demonstrated at a higher rate and more clearly with ICG angiography than with fluorescein angiography. On the other hand, ChNVs in serous retinal detachment, and in disciform lesions were demonstrated more clearly with fluorescein angiography than with ICG angiography. These results show that ICG angiography is valuable

Subretinal neovascularization secondary to choroidal septic metastasis from acute bacterial endocarditis.

The clinical features of an infective embolic choroidopathy are described, from its early onset to late complications in a 45-year-old man with acute Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis of the aortic valve. Initial fundus examination revealed, in addition to fresh choroidal lesions, stigmata of a previous embolic episode secondary to endocarditis from Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. The choroidal lesions were extremely asymmetrical, with a clear preference for localization in the left eye. Similar ocular findings were seen in a 78-year-old female with mitral valve prolapse and acute S. au

Secretogranin III as a novel target for the therapy of choroidal neovascularization.

Wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a leading cause of vision loss in the elderly. The advent of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs represents a major breakthrough in wet AMD therapy but with limited efficacy to improve visual acuity. Secretogranin III (Scg3, SgIII) was recently discovered as a novel angiogenic factor with VEGF-independent mechanisms. Scg3-neutralizing monoclonal antibody (mAb) was reported to alleviate pathological retinal neovascularization in oxygen-induced retinopathy mice and retinal vascular leakage in d

Optic Disc Neovascularization in Tubercular Serpiginous-Like Choroiditis.

Optic disc neovascularization in uveitis is uncommon, and has been associated with chronic inflammations like Behcet's disease, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, sarcoidosis, etc. To our knowledge, optic disc neovascularization has not been reported in tubercular serpiginous-like choroiditis. We report three such cases.

Ranibizumab for coloboma-related choroidal neovascular membrane in a child.

Optic nerve and retinochoroidal coloboma are caused by incomplete closure of the embryonic fissure during fetal development.(1) Affected patients carry a risk for retinal detachment and less so for choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVM) secondary to the altered anatomy. Because of the rarity of this condition and the even more unusual occurrence of such complications, there are only a few case reports on the treatment of coloboma-related CNVM. Herein we report the results of ranibizumab and laser photocoagulation for coloboma-related CNVM in a child.
