Self-testing for 5 respiratory viruses in adult VACCELERATE volunteers in Germany-a pilot study on multi-pathogen rapid antigen testing to monitor community-acquired acute respiratory infections.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are the most common human infections. Diagnostic testing for respiratory pathogens is largely restricted to medical institutions. Self-testing may allow for real-time epidemiological monitoring of ARI pathogens, in particular in individuals not seeking medical attention. METHODS: Adults from the VACCELERATE Volunteer Registry received a test-kit for multiple respiratory antigens, a laminar flow device (LFD) detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), influenza viruses A and B, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and aden

The Eczema Bathing Study: Weekly versus daily bathing for people with eczema? Protocol of an online, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A priority setting partnership for eczema (syn atopic eczema, atopic dermatitis) has identified that bathing frequency is a key area of patient interest. However, there are nolarge, high-quality randomised controlled trials (RCTs) investigating this. The Rapid Eczema Trials project is a novel programme of research that aims to deliver multiple online RCTs, using a citizen science approach. This project involves working with members of the public to co-design and conduct studies that answer questions of importance to them. The first trial to be conducted through this project is asses

Occupancy trends of overwintering coastal waterbird communities reveal guild-specific patterns of redistribution and shifting reliance on existing protected areas.

Climate change and anthropogenic stressors are redistributing species and altering community composition globally. Protected areas (PAs) may not sufficiently protect populations of species undergoing distributional shifts, necessitating that we evaluate existing PAs and identify areas for future protection to conserve biodiversity across regional and temporal scales. Coastal waterbirds are important indicators of marine ecosystem health, representing mobile, long-lived, higher trophic-level consumers. Using a 20-year citizen science dataset (1999-2019) with a before-after control-intervention

Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia miyamotoi in Atlantic Canadian wildlife.

Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia miyamotoi are tick-vectored zoonotic pathogens maintained in wildlife species. Tick populations are establishing in new areas globally in response to climate change and other factors. New Brunswick is a Canadian maritime province at the advancing front of tick population establishment and has seen increasing numbers of ticks carrying B. burgdorferi, and more recently B. miyamotoi. Further, it is part of a region of Atlantic Canada with wildlife species composition differing from much of continental North America and little information exists as to the presence

The Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Registry (SMSR): study protocol of a participatory, nationwide registry to promote epidemiological and patient-centered MS research.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most frequently observed neurological conditions in Switzerland, but data sources for country-wide epidemiological trend monitoring are lacking. Moreover, while clinical and laboratory MS research are generally well established, there is a gap in patient-centered MS research to inform care management, or treatment decisions and policy making not only in Switzerland but worldwide. METHODS: In light of these research gaps, the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Society initiated and funded the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Registry (SMSR) an open-ended, longit

Malaria in a metropolitan region of Southern Germany: past, present and future perspectives on a protozoan infection with the potential of re-appearance in Central Europe.

BACKGROUND: Malaria occurred endemically in Germany until the twentieth century. Climate change and globalization are known to promote the spreading of malaria. Erlangen is a city with just under 120,000 inhabitants located in the Nürnberg metropolitan region, Federal State of Bavaria, Southern Germany. Historical findings, current climate data, microbiological data (local and state level) and vector surveillance data are used to estimate the risk of re-emergence and autochthonous transmission of malaria in the area of Erlangen. METHODS: Historical data was obtained by searching literature. C

Improving shared decision-making about cancer treatment through design-based data-driven decision-support tools and redesigning care paths: an overview of the 4D PICTURE project.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer often have to make complex decisions about treatment, with the options varying in risk profiles and effects on survival and quality of life. Moreover, inefficient care paths make it hard for patients to participate in shared decision-making. Data-driven decision-support tools have the potential to empower patients, support personalized care, improve health outcomes and promote health equity. However, decision-support tools currently seldom consider quality of life or individual preferences, and their use in clinical practice remains limited, partly because they

Big data from electronic health records for early and late translational cardiovascular research: challenges and potential.

AIMS: Cohorts of millions of people's health records, whole genome sequencing, imaging, sensor, societal and publicly available data present a rapidly expanding digital trace of health. We aimed to critically review, for the first time, the challenges and potential of big data across early and late stages of translational cardiovascular disease research. METHODS AND RESULTS: We sought exemplars based on literature reviews and expertise across the BigData@Heart Consortium. We identified formidable challenges including: data quality, knowing what data exist, the legal and ethical framework for

Social networks in improvement of health care.

Social network is a social structure made of individuals or organizations associated with one or more types of interdependence (friendship, common interests, work, knowledge, prestige, etc.) which are the "nodes" of the network. Networks can be organized to exchange information, knowledge or financial assistance under the various interest groups in universities, workplaces and associations of citizens. Today the most popular and widely used networks are based on application of the Internet as the main ICT. Depending on the method of connection, their field of activity and expertise of those wh

Beyond the clinic: a community-embedded, multidomain framework for early detection of glaucoma.

Glaucoma remains one of the leading causes of acquired irreversible blindness worldwide, with normal-tension glaucoma representing the dominant subtype in Japan and several East Asian populations. The insidious, asymptomatic progression of this condition, combined with the demonstrated inadequacy of intraocular pressure alone as a screening criterion, creates a critical gap between disease burden and case detection. Population-based epidemiological studies consistently reveal that the majority of individuals with glaucoma are undiagnosed. Two responses have been suggested: incorporation of ret

Baby walker injury, disability, and death in a high-income middle eastern country, as reported by siblings.

BACKGROUND: Baby walkers (BWs) are frequent causes of infant injuries. Little research is reported from the Middle East and few population-based studies anywhere. METHODS: Using multistage random sampling in a city of the United Arab Emirates, 4 of 8 female Arab government high schools and 3 final-year classes each from science and arts tracks were selected. Structured self-administered questionnaires assessed prevalence, frequency, severity, and external causes of BW incidents and injuries, and residential hazards. RESULTS: Response was 100 %, 696 students, 55 % (n = 385) Emirati citizens.

[Guidelines for severe multiple and multiorgan traumatic injuries].

Traumatic injuries have been described as the largest epidemic of the 20th century. In view of the number of victims and the associated costs, they have been also called the most severe and longest war of the contemporary world. According to Lipiński, every year every tenth Pole is involved in an accident and every one hundred-thirteenth Polish citizen requires specialist medical care. Thus, the general incidence is approximately 750 accidents per 100,000 Poles per year. 300,000 of them need hospital treatment, 30,000 die from accidents. Despite considerable progress in medical sciences and pr

The effectiveness of digital cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing loneliness among older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the world's population ages faster, the issue of older adults' loneliness has become more important. Research shows loneliness significantly reduces their quality of life and is strongly linked to mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and cardiovascular disorders. Digital cognitive behavioral therapy (dCBT) has positive results in reducing anxiety and depression, but there is conflicting evidence about its effectiveness in treating older adults' loneliness. OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy of digital cognitive behavioral therapy in alleviating

Strategies to enhance palliative care access in rural populations and increase awareness of life-limiting illnesses in India: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: As of April 2023, India is reported to be the most populated country in the globe by the United Nations, with estimation of around 1.5 billion citizens. Despite the development in palliative delivery in recent years, access to such services in rural populations remains underutilized and shows many difficulties. As life expectancy increases, those who live in rural areas are faced with higher incidences of non-communicable diseases along with the already burdened prevalence of infectious diseases, leading to an ever-high demand for end-of-life healthcare services that are easy to ac

Exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution in schools in Africa: Current status, knowledge gaps, and a call to action.

Chronic exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution is linked to adverse human health impacts worldwide, and in children, these include increased respiratory symptoms, reduced cognitive and academic performance, and absences from school. African children are exposed to high levels of air pollution from aging diesel and gasoline second-hand vehicles, dusty roads, trash burning, and solid-fuel combustion for cooking. There is a need for more empirical evidence on the impact of air pollutants on schoolchildren in most countries of Africa. Therefore, we conducted a scoping review on schoolchildre

A team science approach to discover novel targets for infantile spasms (IS).

Infantile spasms (IS) is a devastating epilepsy syndrome that typically begins in the first year of life. Symptoms consist of stereotypical spasms, developmental delay, and electroencephalogram (EEG) that may demonstrate Hypsarhythmia. Current therapeutic approaches are not always effective, and there is no reliable way to predict which patient will respond to therapy. Given this disorder's complexity and the potential impact of a disease-modifying approach, Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE) employed a "team science" approach to advance the understanding of IS pathology and explo

Fluoroquinolone-related neuropsychiatric and mitochondrial toxicity: a collaborative investigation by scientists and members of a social network.

BACKGROUND: The 3 fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics - ciprofoxacin, levofoxacin, and moxifoxacin - are commonly administered to oncology patients. Although these oral antibiotics are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of urinary tract infections, acute bacterial sinusitis, or bacterial infection in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, they are commonly prescribed off-label to neutropenic cancer patients for the prevention and treatment of infections associated with febrile neutropenia. High rates of voluntary clinic attendance among community members screened with high cardiovascular disease risk scores in the rural and urban communities of Adama, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Community level screening, referral and care intervention for the rising burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and its risk factors in sub-Saharan Africa has been advocated. However, very low completed referral rates among those identified at risk has been reported. The goal of the current study was to use a citizen science-based approach to identify and refer those at high CVD risk to local health clinics, assess the referral rates in each community, and explore reasons for non-attendance by urban or rural location. METHODS: Twelve trained health extension workers (HEWs) screen
