The objectives of this study were to determine whether high doses of fentanyl anesthesia reduced the surgical stress level and to elucidate the effect of fentanyl anesthesia on protein turnover after esophagectomy. Scanographic examinations with the use of citrate 67Ga in patients with respiratory sarcoidosis made it possible to discover valid incidence, localization and evidence of a pathological process. Of 58 patients in Leogane, Haiti, infected with Wuchereria bancrofti and treated with diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC-C) at 6 mg/kg per day for 12 days (= 72 mg/kg), 38 (66%) of 58 continued to harbor low numbers of circulating microfilariae (median microfilariae could be demonstrated in 7 (37%) of 19 patients, with a median microfilarial density of 8 mf/ml. Two pediatric patients with salmonella infections (one with typhoid fever and the second with salmonella C2 gastroenteritis), had a diffuse abdominal uptake of Ga-67 citrate. A 34-year-old patient, gravida 7, para 0, with three consecutive spontaneous abortions followed by four recurrent molar pregnancies is described. The patient conceived only with clomiphene citrate or human gonadotropin treatment. The occurrence of molar pregnancies succeeded spontaneous abortions with one remaining pregnancy progressing to gestational trophoblastic disease. The role of clomiphene citrate and human gonadotropins in the pathogenesis of this disease is discussed.

During the five years ending on December 31, 1981, 159 anovulatory and oligomenorrheic patients were treated with clomiphene citrate for induction of ovulation. Overall, 86% of these patients ovulated, and 49% of the patients who ovulated conceived. Life table analysis was employed to investigate factors contributing to reduced conception rates, including abnormal semen analysis, pelvic or tubal abnormalities, and poor cervical mucus. An extended regimen of clomiphene consisting of 250 mg of clomiphene for 8 days followed by the administration of 10,000 IU of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) 6 days later was administered to 13 oligomenorrheic women who had previously failed to ovulate when treated with 250 mg of clomiphene for 5 days and hCG. Eight of these 13 women ovulated. Their postovulatory mean progesterone (P) level 7 days after hCG was 16 +/- 2 ng/ml. Three pregnancies occurred during 25 treatment cycles. A group of 23 patients with Fasciola hepatica have been studied in the province of Biscay. The diagnosis was reached after finding parasite eggs in the faeces or duodenal juice. The liver lesion was confirmed by means of macro and microscopic studies. Radiocolloid demonstrated the presence of cold areas in 18 patients; in 13 of them the uptake with 67Ga was positive. These isotopic findings identified Fasciola hepatica as one of the causes of 'cold areas' in traditional liver scans and positive 67Ga uptake.

A 9-year-old uremic girl who showed intense parotid uptake when scanned with gallium-67-citrate is discussed. None of the more frequently described predisposing factors was present. A review of 22 other children scanned for suspected inflammatory disease revealed minimal parotid and lacrimal activity in three, with lacrimal activity only in another four. It is suggested that a metabolic cause be considered when there is abnormal parotid activity with Ga-67 scintigraphy.
