OBJECTIVE: To determine if Chinese individuals with nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) display more bilateral asymmetry than do their unaffected relatives.
DESIGN/SUBJECTS: A case-control study of 313 individuals with CL/P from Shanghai, China, with 201 unaffected relatives as controls.
METHODS: Size-adjusted asymmetry scores were defined by data on middle-finger length, palm length, palpebral fissure width, and ear length. Case-control comparisons used a multivariate repeated measures analysis of variance, paired t tests, and the Wilcoxon signed rank test.
RESULTS:

Cleft lip and palate are common craniofacial anomalies that may affect feeding, speech, and hearing. When associated with external ear malformations such as microtia, careful evaluation for auditory impairment and possible syndromic conditions is required. We report a 3-month-old male infant with a left complete unilateral cleft lip and palate and ipsilateral Weerda grade II microtia who underwent early cleft lip repair through an outreach cleft care program. The patient presented with feeding difficulty but no additional craniofacial or systemic anomalies. Surgical repair using a rotation-adv

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) is a complex disease with a strong genetic component. More than 40 loci have been identified to be associated with the risk of NSCL/P by genome-wide association studies (GWASs), but the majority of these variants are mapped to non-coding regions of the genome. Expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) studies have increasingly been integrated with GWASs to identify target genes for these non-coding variants. In this study, we generated a unique, lip-specific eQTL dataset from 40 NSCL/P patients. A total of 5158 eQTL SNPs (eSNPs) -6

OBJECTIVES: IFN-mediated diseases are mendelian innate immunodysregulatory disorders that present early in life with fevers, sterile organ inflammation, and a high type-I IFN-response gene signature in peripheral blood cells. To date, monumental discoveries of novel genetic variants with various phenotypic features have been recognised. We aimed to describe the genotype and phenotype findings in Saudi children diagnosed with autoinflammatory interferonopathy and to report novel findings.
METHODS: This is a descriptive retrospective cohort study of children with genetically confirmed type I in

BACKGROUND: This cross-sectional study aimed to compare subjective assessments among patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP), cleft surgeons, and lay people regarding the soft tissue lateral profile of CLP patients. We also investigated the correlations between subjective assessments and photogrammetric measurements.
METHODS: A total of 150 CLP patients who wished to have treatment for their unattractive appearance were randomly selected. A standard lateral profile color photograph was taken. Panels of three cleft surgeons, ten CLP patients, and ten lay people were selected to be assessors.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the Cleft Recurrence Risk (Cleft RR) App, designed to be used on genetic counseling for cleft lip and/ or palate.
DESIGN: A validation study, single cohort.
SETTING: Tertiary care children's Hospital.
PATIENTS, PARTICIPANTS: The manual obtained the results of 100 cases undergoing genetic counseling at the cleft lip and palate treatment center.
INTERVENTIONS: The application for genetic counseling for cleft lip and/ or palate is designed to calculate quickly the recurrence risk considering the ancestry, cleft type, sex, and family history and thus encourage the implem

UNLABELLED: Cleft lip and/or palate are one of the most common birth defects around the world. This cross sectional study aimed to study characteristic of cleft lip and plate cases attended Khaula Hospital Cleft Center.
METHODS: The data were collected from Plastic Surgery Department of Khaula Hospital Muscat, Oman, between years 2010 and 2019. Data was collected using a form that included demographic distribution of patients, gender, age, birth weight, region, age when first attended hospital, associated congenital anomalies and syndromes, type of delivery, mother consumption of Folic Acid,

Cleft lip and cleft alveolus are caused by incomplete fusion of the frontonasal and maxillary prominences. However, milder forms of cleft lip are rarely accompanied by cleft alveolus. Here, we report a rare case of mini-microform cleft lip with complete cleft alveolus and cleft palate. No findings suggestive of cleft lip were evident on initial examination. However, three-dimensional facial measurements confirmed the presence of cleft lip despite no evidence of orbicularis oris muscle (OOM) rupture on ultrasonography. Collapsed nostril, as observed in this case, is usually associated with OOM

A full understanding of balanced facial growth, based on a complete knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the region, is essential if cleft lip and palate is to be treated successfully. The cleft abnormality is the cause of underdevelopment and subsequent loss of function. Cleft surgery must aim to restore normal anatomy and physiology with emphasis on muscle reconstruction of the lip and soft palate if normal facial development is to be achieved.

Cleft lip and palate anomalies are common congenital defects that can be isolated or present in conjunction with other congenital anomalies. As repair is recommended in infancy, providers need to distinguish between an isolated manifestation versus an association with other congenital abnormalities to assess any increase in perioperative risks. Furthermore, the anesthesiologist must understand the perioperative capabilities of their clinical setting, as this will dictate the feasibility of proceeding with repair and perioperative management. We discuss anesthetic considerations in children wit

BACKGROUND: Side effects of opioid pain management after surgical repair of cleft lips are numerous and affect postoperative course. We compared opioid versus opioid-free pain management regimens for infants who underwent cleft lip repair to evaluate the impact on postoperative recovery.
METHODS: Cleft lip repairs at our institution from December 2016 to February 2021 were retrospectively reviewed, comparing patients who received opioids to patients receiving a nonopioid pain control regimen. Data collected include length of stay, oral morphine equivalents (OME) received on day of surgery (DO

BACKGROUND: The lower lateral cartilages (LLCs) are key elements for alar and tip support. Repositioning of both LLCs is an effective procedure for correcting a laterally spreading dome of LLCs and drooping nasal tip in cleft lip nasal deformity (CLND). The alar contour graft has become an essential component of rhinoplasty for correcting the concave or collapsed and retracted alar. Herein, onlay cartilage graft was combined with nasal tip plasty to correct hypoplastic cleft lateral crus or alar rim retraction, and with columella strut to obtain better aesthetic outcomes in patients with sever

BACKGROUND: Cleft rhinoplasty is a challenging form of nasal correction of both esthetic and functional deformities. The septal cartilage in many Asian patients are not sufficient and weak. Does a combination of the septal cartilage and the bony septum have both esthetic and functional benefits to secondary unilateral cleft rhinoplasty?
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with a unilateral cleft lip palate underwent open rhinoplasty from October 2018 to January 2021. After preserving a 10 mm L-strut, the posterior cartilaginous and bony septum were harvested as an integrative unit. The oste

Dr Michael B. Lewis has been using his personal approach to bilateral cleft lip (BCL) repair for 30 years to achieve a loose, pouting upper lip, a 90-degree columellar-labial angle, and a projecting nasal tip. This article describes technique and results.

This article presents an overview of the cleft lip nasal deformity and its treatment. The complex pathologic changes to normal nasal anatomy are described, and treatment strategies for both unilateral and bilateral cleft lip patients are presented. The surgical technique for management of the cleft lip nasal deformity is discussed as it pertains to both primary and secondary correction.
