Human influence on climate detectable in the late 19th century.

The physics of the heat-trapping properties of CO[Formula: see text] were established in the mid-19th century, as fossil fuel burning rapidly increased atmospheric CO[Formula: see text] levels. To date, however, research has not probed when climate change could have been detected if scientists in the 19th century had the current models and observing network. We consider this question in a thought experiment with state-of-the-art climate models. We assume that the capability to make accurate measurements of atmospheric temperature changes existed in 1860, and then apply a standard "fingerprint"

Just transition, double bind or both? Climate change action by North American community land trusts.

Can socially or community-owned enterprise models systematically enable equitable climate action, as has been previously suggested by case study research? To empirically measure and test this proposition, we systematically surveyed all North American community land trusts (CLTs), which primarily serve lower-income households. We found that a majority of CLTs engage in climate action, with mitigation efforts more prevalent than adaptation efforts. Statistical analyses confirm CLTs' rate of action cannot solely be explained by their climate hazards exposure. This suggests they can concurrently a

Time series analysis of carbon dioxide emission: a comparison of statistical, machine learning, and deep learning models.

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is one of the infamous greenhouse gases, resulting in increased global temperature and climate change. The steady rise in atmospheric CO₂ levels, primarily driven by anthropogenic activities, poses serious environmental and socio-economic challenges. Understanding and forecasting CO₂ emission trends are essential for guiding global mitigation efforts and assessing progress toward climate commitments. In this study, we aim to investigate the monthly CO₂ emission trend from direct measurement data collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and build pre

Explaining the Links Between School Administrator Leadership, Job Satisfaction, and Participatory School Climate: A Machine Learning-Enhanced Multilevel Analysis of TALIS 2024 School Administrator Data.

A participatory school climate refers to the involvement of school administrators, teachers, and other school members in decision-making processes, their sharing of responsibility, and their collaborative work for school improvement. Since this climate can be related to individual, organizational, and contextual factors such as leadership, job satisfaction, diversity beliefs, workload, well-being, and national context, identifying the key variables that support a participatory school environment is important. This study used TALIS 2024 school administrator data to identify the main predictors

Impact of climate change on agricultural production; Issues, challenges, and opportunities in Asia.

Agricultural production is under threat due to climate change in food insecure regions, especially in Asian countries. Various climate-driven extremes, i.e., drought, heat waves, erratic and intense rainfall patterns, storms, floods, and emerging insect pests have adversely affected the livelihood of the farmers. Future climatic predictions showed a significant increase in temperature, and erratic rainfall with higher intensity while variability exists in climatic patterns for climate extremes prediction. For mid-century (2040-2069), it is projected that there will be a rise of 2.8°C in maximu

Opportunities in multiscale modeling of mosquito-borne flaviviruses.

Mosquito-borne flaviviruses, such as Zika, dengue, West Nile, and yellow fever virus, represent a growing public health concern due to their widespread distribution and the severe diseases they cause. These viruses are difficult to control as climate change and urbanization help mosquitoes expand into new areas, increasing the risk of outbreaks. Mathematical models play a key role in understanding their spread, providing insights at every level-from how the virus multiplies inside cells to how it circulates through entire populations. This review examines various approaches used in modeling ar

Climate change anxiety, hurricane exposure, and climate change actions and attitudes: results from a representative, probability-based survey of US Gulf Coast residents.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to climate change-related threats (eg, hurricanes) has been associated with mental health symptoms, including post-traumatic stress symptoms. Yet it is unclear whether climate change anxiety, which is understudied in representative samples, is a specific mental health threat, action motivator, or both, particularly in populations exposed to climate-change related disasters. We sought to examine the associations between exposure to hurricanes, climate change anxiety, and climate change actions and attitudes in a representative sample of US Gulf Coast residents. METHODS: Th

Correlates of climate change distress: The difference to general distress.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change has significant consequences on mental health, which are summarized under concepts like eco-anxiety or climate change distress. However, these recently developed concepts still suffer from a lack of clarity. AIM: The aim of this study is to improve the conceptual clarity of climate change distress through analysing its' correlations with various psychological and demographic factors. In this context, the specific associations of climate change distress are compared to those of general distress. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study N = 1000 participants completed a

Pathogen-host associations and predicted range shifts of human monkeypox in response to climate change in central Africa.

Climate change is predicted to result in changes in the geographic ranges and local prevalence of infectious diseases, either through direct effects on the pathogen, or indirectly through range shifts in vector and reservoir species. To better understand the occurrence of monkeypox virus (MPXV), an emerging Orthopoxvirus in humans, under contemporary and future climate conditions, we used ecological niche modeling techniques in conjunction with climate and remote-sensing variables. We first created spatially explicit probability distributions of its candidate reservoir species in Africa's Cong

A harmonized database of European forest simulations under climate change.

Process-based forest models combine biological, physical, and chemical process understanding to simulate forest dynamics as an emergent property of the system. As such, they are valuable tools to investigate the effects of climate change on forest ecosystems. Specifically, they allow testing of hypotheses regarding long-term ecosystem dynamics and provide means to assess the impacts of climate scenarios on future forest development. As a consequence, numerous local-scale simulation studies have been conducted over the past decades to assess the impacts of climate change on forests. These studi

Global and regional climate modes modulate armed conflict risk.

Because of their impacts on droughts, famines, and floods, modes of climate variability can shape patterns of social instability. Yet the mechanisms linking climate variability to armed conflict remain contested, especially relative to the myriad sociopolitical and economic determinants of conflict. A key challenge is that most studies rely on coarse, state-level data and treat climatic teleconnections as invariant. As such, it is unknown whether there are distinct climate hazards that select for conflict risk; whether conflict scales with climate hazard exposure; and whether such associations

Distribution and predicted climatic refugia for a reef-building cold-water coral on the southeast US margin.

Climate change is reorganizing the planet's biodiversity, necessitating proactive management of species and habitats based on spatiotemporal predictions of distributions across climate scenarios. In marine settings, climatic changes will predominantly manifest via warming, ocean acidification, deoxygenation, and changes in hydrodynamics. Lophelia pertusa, the main reef-forming coral present throughout the deep Atlantic Ocean (>200 m), is particularly sensitive to such stressors with stark reductions in suitable habitat predicted to accrue by 2100 in a business-as-usual scenario. However, with

Effects of climate change, invasive species, and disease on the distribution of native European crayfishes.

Climate change will require species to adapt to new conditions or follow preferred climates to higher latitudes or elevations, but many dispersal-limited freshwater species may be unable to move due to barriers imposed by watershed boundaries. In addition, invasive nonnative species may expand into new regions under future climate conditions and contribute to the decline of native species. We evaluated future distributions for the threatened European crayfish fauna in response to climate change, watershed boundaries, and the spread of invasive crayfishes, which transmit the crayfish plague, a

Relationships between climate and year-to-year variability in meningitis outbreaks: a case study in Burkina Faso and Niger.

BACKGROUND: Every year, West Africa is afflicted with Meningococcal Meningitis (MCM) disease outbreaks. Although the seasonal and spatial patterns of disease cases have been shown to be linked to climate, the mechanisms responsible for these patterns are still not well identified. RESULTS: A statistical analysis of annual incidence of MCM and climatic variables has been performed to highlight the relationships between climate and MCM for two highly afflicted countries: Niger and Burkina Faso. We found that disease resurgence in Niger and in Burkina Faso is likely to be partly controlled by th

Harnessing deep learning to monitor people's perceptions towards climate change on social media.

Social media has become a popular stage for people's views over climate change. Monitoring how climate change is perceived on social media is relevant for informed decision-making. This work advances the way social media users' perceptions and reactions towards climate change can be understood over time, by implementing a scalable methodological framework grounded on natural language processing. The framework was tested in over 1771 thousand X/Twitter posts of Spanish, Portuguese, and English discourses from Southwestern Europe. The employed models were successful (i.e., > 84% success rate) in
