Uneven consequences of global climate mitigation pathways on regional water quality in the 21st century.

Future socioeconomic climate pathways have regional water-quality consequences whose severity and equity have not yet been fully understood across geographic and economic spectra. We use a process-based, terrestrial-freshwater ecosystem model to project 21st-century river nitrogen loads under these pathways. We find that fertilizer usage is the primary determinant of future river nitrogen loads, changing precipitation and warming have limited impacts, and CO2 fertilization-induced vegetation growth enhancement leads to modest load reductions. Fertilizer applications to produce bioenergy in cli

Effects of climate change on the occurrence and distribution of livestock diseases.

The planet's mean air and ocean temperatures have been rising over the last century because of increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These changes have substantial effects on the epidemiology of infectious diseases. We describe direct and indirect processes linking climate change and infectious diseases in livestock with reference to specific case studies. Some of the studies are used to show a positive association between temperature and expansion of the geographical ranges of arthropod vectors (e.g. Culicoides imicola, which transmits bluetongue virus) while others are used to illustrat

Climate Impact of Direct and Indirect N2O Emissions from the Ammonia Marine Fuel Value Chain.

Ammonia (NH3) emerges as a near-zero-carbon shipping fuel, but its value chain can emit noncarbon greenhouse gases (GHGs) like nitrous oxide (N2O) and pollutants, such as NH3 and nitrogen oxides (NOx). N2O, with 273 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide (CO2), is also indirectly emitted through transformations of reactive nitrogen (Nr) species, like NH3 and NOx, in natural environments. Understanding ammonia's climate impact is crucial for evaluating its efficacy as a fossil fuel alternative. We present a functional model to quantify the climate impact of renewable-based (e-ammo

Disease, Drought, and Warming: A Triple Threat to a Declining High-Elevation Amphibian.

Managing species in an uncertain future is a reality for natural resource decision makers. Climate change is expected to exacerbate threats such as habitat loss and disease, and cause phenological mismatches, but there is uncertainty in the magnitude of these effects. Amphibians are among the most threatened taxa on earth, and most species in North America are uniquely tied to water availability for breeding, larval development, thermal refugia, and food availability. Changes in water availability and temperature may result in phenological mismatches with one or more of these processes. Thus,

Exploring the resilience of playa lake ecosystems to climate change: A microbial perspective.

Playa lakes, ephemeral water bodies found in arid and semi-arid regions, are increasingly impacted by climate change. The Mexican playa Lake Atotonilco has experienced a significant decline in water volume, leading to increased salinity and making it a valuable model for assessing climate impacts. Using 16S rRNA sequencing, this study investigated the responses of microbial communities and their contributions to key biogeochemical cycles, including those related to greenhouse gas dynamics. Spatial differences in physicochemical parameters were observed: channels and wastewater treatment plant

Extra Climate Benefits From Afforestation Due to Reduced Forest Fragmentation in China.

Afforestation connects isolated forests into larger contiguous forests, reducing forest fragmentation. This process decreases edge areas by transforming edge forests into new interior forests (termed transformed forests). However, the extra climate benefits from edge reductions in transformed forests, beyond those provided by the planted forests themselves, remain unclear. Here, CO2 sequestration from increased biomass (biogeochemical effect) and emissions from decreased albedo (biophysical effect) of transformed forests in China are estimated, using multiple high-resolution remote-sensing dat

Projected sediment supply deficits threaten intertidal wetland resilience to sea-level rise in southeast Australia.

Estuarine intertidal wetlands, positioned at the interface of land and sea, are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise and other climate change threats such as flooding and storm-driven erosion. Sustaining these ecosystems and their services requires evidence-based projections of wetland resilience under multiple climate futures while explicitly accounting for uncertainty. Here, we integrated the revised universal soil loss equation with updated rainfall projections from the New South Wales and Australian Regional Climate Modelling (NARCliM2.0) to estimate potential sediment delivery to New South

Long-term trends of streamwater chemistry in an agricultural watershed: Effects of anthropogenic and climatic factors.

The chemistry of headwater streams is a key indicator of the health of riparian zones and surrounding terrestrial ecosystems. This chemistry is shaped by biogeochemical processes, including chemical weathering, and anthropogenic activities that interact with one another and are sensitive to climate. Elucidating trends in streamwater chemistry and the drivers that underpin them is essential for informing land-management decisions and anticipating water-quality issues that may affect downstream waters. In this work, we investigated the effects of anthropogenic and climatic factors on long-term v

Investigation of the usage of machine learning to explore the impacts of climate change on occupational health: a systematic review and research agenda.

Occupational accidents can be potentialized by factors related to the workplace or the environment, such as climatic conditions. Air temperature, wind speed, and humidity can be used to monitor occupational heat stress, leading to cramps, exhaustion, stroke, and even death. Under the climate change scenario, measuring these variables is fundamental to developing adaptation strategies for maintaining the workers' well-being. However, when dealing with this high data volume from distinctive factors, traditional techniques are insufficient to extract all information effectively. Therefore, comput

Modeling Fertilization Outcome in a Changing World.

Marine organisms have complex life histories. For broadcast spawners, successful continuation of the population requires their small gametes to make contact in the water column for sufficiently long periods for fertilization to occur. Anthropogenic climate change has been shown to impact fertilization success in various marine invertebrates, including sea urchins, which are key grazers in their habitats. Gamete performance of both sexes declined when exposed to elevated temperatures and/or pCO2 levels. Examples of reduced performance included slower sperm swimming speed and thinning egg jelly

Differential and enhanced response to climate forcing in diarrheal disease due to rotavirus across a megacity of the developing world.

The role of climate forcing in the population dynamics of infectious diseases has typically been revealed via retrospective analyses of incidence records aggregated across space and, in particular, over whole cities. Here, we focus on the transmission dynamics of rotavirus, the main diarrheal disease in infants and young children, within the megacity of Dhaka, Bangladesh. We identify two zones, the densely urbanized core and the more rural periphery, that respond differentially to flooding. Moreover, disease seasonality differs substantially between these regions, spanning variation comparable

Differential Scaling Patterns in Maxillary Sinus Volume and Nasal Cavity Breadth Among Modern Humans.

Among modern humans, nasal cavity size and shape reflect its vital role in air conditioning processes. The ability for the nasal cavity to augment its shape, particularly in inferior breadth, likely relates to the surrounding maxillary sinuses acting as zones of accommodation. However, much is still unknown regarding how nasal and sinus morphology relate to each other and to overall craniofacial form, particularly across diverse populations with varying respiratory demands. As such, this study uses computed tomographic (CT) scans of modern human crania (N = 171) from nine different localities

Hotspots of Bacterial Pathogen Abundance and Exposure Risk in Soils of the Contiguous United States.

Soils are reservoirs of pathogenic bacteria that cause human illness, particularly after mobilizing events such as extreme rain. Land-use patterns (e.g., proximity to agriculture) and soil properties (e.g., moisture) are associated with abundance of individual pathogenic bacteria. However, there are major uncertainties in (a) the importance of local/regional land-use decisions relative to overall natural variability of pathogenicity and (b) the correlations among pathogen abundance, climate-linked physical processes increasing pathogen mobility, and the vulnerability of human receptors. This i

Factors driving the circulation and possible expansion of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in the western Palearctic.

AIMS: To produce a spatial risk map regarding spread of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in the western Palearctic by linking a process-driven model of the main tick vector, Hyalomma marginatum, to a Next Generation Matrix. METHODS AND RESULTS: Process-driven model was composed of deterministic equations that simulate developmental and mortality rates of different tick stages by using temperature and atmospheric water vapour data. The model used climate data at 10-day intervals at a spatial resolution of 10 min over western Palearctic. The model estimated the basic reproduction

Comparative Analysis of the Microbial Community Profiles of Sichuan and Guizhou Smoke-Cured Sausages Using a High-Throughput Sequencing Approach.

Autochthonous microorganisms play critical roles in shaping the quality of Chinese sausages and may be influenced by local climate and/or processing conditions. The present study aimed to reveal the interprovincial differences in microbial community between Sichuan and Guizhou sausages, as well as driving factors based on high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. The results indicated that Cobetia, Debaryomycetaceae, Kurtzmaniella, and Candida zeylanoides served as biomarkers for Sichuan sausages. In contrast, Enterococcus, unclassified Cyanobacteriales, Lactobacillales, Aspergill

Using meta-omics of contaminated sediments to monitor changes in pathways relevant to climate regulation.

Microbially mediated biogeochemical processes are crucial for climate regulation and may be disrupted by anthropogenic contaminants. To better manage contaminants, we need tools that make real-time causal links between stressors and altered microbial functions, and the potential consequences for ecosystem services such as climate regulation. In a manipulative field experiment, we used metatranscriptomics to investigate the impact of excess organic enrichment and metal contamination on the gene expression of nitrogen and sulfur metabolisms in coastal sediments. Our gene expression data suggest

Nutrients in estuaries--an overview and the potential impacts of climate change.

The fate and cycling of macronutrients introduced into estuaries depend upon a range of interlinked processes. Hydrodynamics and morphology in combination with freshwater inflow control the freshwater flushing time, and the timescale for biogeochemical processes to operate that include microbial activity, particle-dissolved phase interactions, and benthic exchanges. In some systems atmospheric inputs and exchanges with coastal waters can also be important. Climate change will affect nutrient inputs and behaviour through modifications to temperature, wind patterns, the hydrological cycle, and s

Psychological pathways linking discrimination to alcohol and marijuana use among LGB young adults during the 2024 presidential election.

During the 2024 US presidential election, a surge in anti-lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) rhetoric contributed to a hostile political climate that intensified the psychological impact of discrimination among LGB young adults. Drawing from minority stress theory and the psychological mediation framework (PMF), exposure to LGBT discrimination may be linked to greater substance use through intrapersonal (sexual orientation rumination and hopelessness) and interpersonal (interpersonal political tension) processes. However, little is known about these indirect pathways and whether they vary as a f
