Vulnerability for autism traits in boys and men with an extra X chromosome (47,XXY): the mediating role of cognitive flexibility.

The XXY chromosomal pattern (Klinefelter syndrome, KS) has been associated with specific effects on physical, neurobiological, endocrinological and psychological development. This study was focused on the described risk for autism in KS, and the cognitive mechanisms that mediate this risk. Our aim was to assess whether autistic features in KS result from impairments in executive functioning, more specifically difficulties in cognitive flexibility. In total, 71 boys and men with KS and 61 non-clinical controls participated in the study. Autistic features were assessed using the Autism-spectrum

Impact of virtual adjunctive cognitive remediation therapy on cognitive flexibility and treatment outcomes in comorbid anorexia nervosa and exercise dependence as quantified using novel biomarkers: A stage 1 registered report.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with significant individual mental and physical suffering and public health burden and fewer than half of patients recover fully with current treatments. Comorbid exercise dependence (ExD) is common in AN and associated with significantly worse symptom severity and treatment outcomes. Research points to cognitive inflexibility as a prominent executive function inefficiency and transdiagnostic etiologic and maintaining mechanism linking AN and ExD. This study will evaluate the initial efficacy of adjunctive Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT), whic

Early adaptive schemas, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility in eating disorders: subtype specific predictors of eating disorder symptoms using hierarchical linear regression.

PURPOSE: Understanding how early adaptive schemas, cognitive flexibility, and emotional regulation influence eating disorder (ED) symptoms, and whether this differs across diagnostic subtypes is critical to optimising treatment. The current study investigated the relationship between these variables and ED symptomology in individuals self-reporting an ED diagnosis and healthy controls. METHODS: A dataset of 1576 online survey responses yielded subsamples for anorexia nervosa (n = 155), bulimia nervosa (n = 55), binge eating disorder (n = 33), other specified feeding or eating disorder (n = 93

Thinking Outside the Nation: Cognitive Flexibility's Role in National Identity Inclusiveness as a Marker of Majority Group Acculturation.

In superdiverse societies like Canada, characterized by high levels of cultural and ethnic plurality, national identity boundaries are often blurry. While policies may officially promote inclusiveness, public discourse on national identity is frequently dominated by mainstream groups, whose willingness to expand these boundaries plays a crucial role in fostering minority inclusion. Despite the importance of inclusivity for social cohesion, little is known about what enables majority group members to adopt a more inclusive national identity. This study addresses this gap by exploring the role o

AI information encounters and university students' digital burnout: the mediating role of cognitive flexibility and the moderating effect of AI learning trust.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of educational environments, where university students often encounter algorithm-recommended information unexpectedly, known as AI information encounters. Such interactions frequently lead to increased cognitive load, and it is unclear whether the ongoing depletion of these cognitive resources is statistically linked to digital burnout among university students. This study utilizes the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) framework as its analytical foundation, employing cognitive load theory to elucidate the mediating role of cog

App-based mindfulness meditation training enhances cognitive flexibility and modulates ACC and medial frontal gyrus activation during task switching in adolescent OCD.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive flexibility is a core executive function often impaired in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Mindfulness-based interventions have been hypothesized to improve cognitive flexibility and may be a promising adjunctive intervention for adolescents with OCD. The current study examines which cognitive neurophysiological processes underlie mindfulness-based interventions in cognitive flexibility. METHODS: In a randomized, interviewer-blind design, 76 adolescents (aged 10-19) with diagnosed or suspected OCD were enrolled. After exclusion, the final sample inc

Sex-stratified compositional analysis of 24-h movement behaviors and their relationship with selective attention and cognitive flexibility in socioeconomically vulnerable children.

INTRODUCTION: The 24-h movement behavior framework, which integrates physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior, and sleep, acknowledges the co-dependent nature of time-use behaviors within a finite day. While these behaviors have been linked to cognitive performance in children, few studies have applied compositional data analysis (CoDA), and none have examined potential sex differences. OBJECTIVE: To explore sex-specific associations between 24-h movement behavior compositions and selective attention and cognitive flexibility in a sample of socioeconomically vulnerable Chilean children usin

Cognitive flexibility and DSM-5 severity criteria for eating disorders: assessing drive for thinness and duration of illness as alternative severity variables.

BACKGROUND: The severity criteria for eating disorders (EDs) proposed in the DSM-5 have been established without sufficient empirical support. Drive for thinness (DT) and duration of illness have been proposed as two alternative severity measures, however their empirical evidence is also limited. To date, no research has assessed the validity of current eating disorder (ED) severity criteria regarding cognitive flexibility factors. Cognitive flexibility is often impaired in EDs, becoming a possible severity symptom. The current study assessed for the first time (1) whether the severity indexes

Cognitive flexibility as a bridge between depressive symptoms and problematic smartphone use in adolescents: A two-wave network analysis across depression-severity groups.

The co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and problematic smartphone use (PSU) in adolescents poses a growing public health concern, but its component-level conditional associations, cross-wave patterns, and variation across depression-severity groups remain insufficiently understood. Using a two-wave observational design with a 12-month interval (N = 1200 students from one high school in a county of Gansu Province, China), this study integrated Gaussian graphical modeling (GGM), network comparison testing (NCT), and latent profile analysis (LPA). Cognitive Flexibility showed the largest absolu

Renovating the Barnes maze for mouse models of dementia with STARR FIELD: A 4-day protocol for learning rate, retention, and cognitive flexibility.

Land-based spatial mazes are a low-stress method to evaluate learning in rodent models of dementia. By using innate exploratory and hiding behavior, the Barnes maze requires fewer trials, allowing examination of early learning rate and retention, as well as executive and motivational features that can be characteristic of non-amnestic dementias. However, unwanted odor cues may disrupt interpretation of acquisition rate during typical learning trials. We designed and tested our Barnes FIELD protocol (Find the Invisible Exit to Locate the Domicile) to improve reproducibility, allow evaluation of
